  1. Opencaching.us doesn't require a sponsor like Terra (nor have a crappy interface like they do) so I put one out to test the waters.
  2. Why does it have to be one or the other? Sometimes I shop at Target, sometimes at WalMart. More sites, more caches! On topic, my guess - beaver.
  3. I love how this entitlement sentiment and others like it in this thread seem to assume that caches magically appear in the field. Lots of luck having quality caches to find in the future if this becomes the prevalent attitude for online logging. Way to promote good will.
  4. Thanks for posting the list. I would add: 2. Compass or GPSr ~I would carry both. If you get lost you can orient yourself on the map with a GPSR. And while you can tell directions with some GPS devices, it's easier to do with a magnetic compass and they don't run out of batteries. 4. Extra food - A snickers bar works ~I get much more energy bang for my buck with energy gel. 7. First aid supplies (be sure to include an extra day of any medication you are taking or might need in an emergency) Know how to use it. ~I carry a couple of band-aids, some Advil and a couple of Rx pain pills. If I get hurt more than that my goal is to get home ASAP. 9. Matches (stored in a water tight container or a butane lighter) ~Bic lighters are cheap, light and dependable. Toss in a couple and you're covered. ETA: I also carry a big baggie to keep the map in - I've had more than one disintegrate on me in the rain.
  5. In my opinion, way out of line. Lighten up, Francis.
  6. Agreed, although I'm sure it's happened. In this case I'm guessing posters are dreaming up worst case hypotheticals to get the backing of the community. That will put them on a slippery slope of course. It's just my opinion, but I don't believe it's appropriate to log NM or NA without visiting a cache personally regardless of what previous logs say. Sometimes previous logs influence future cachers. Example, on one cache a couple of people logged DNFs. Then someone posted a NM with a note to the effect "container is gone, found log on ground". When I went to check on it the cache was in place where it should have been and was in good shape. If a cache is really in as bad shape as described and is blocking a hide you want to place, I suggest visiting the cache and give it a thorough search. If you can't find it then come back and log your NA. Edited for clarity.
  7. The very first thing you should do is go out and look for it yourself. I own a lot of caches and it's not uncommon at all for a cache to be found by someone with a low find count (say 100) and get DNF'd by someone with a high find count (over 1000). If you can't find it yourself, the next thing to do is check to see when the CO has last logged into the site. If it's before the DNF's started then you might have a case, still I'd try to contact the owner first. People have lives you know. Finally if you you can't find it, the owner is inactive, there are numerous DNFs and a NM log it's OK to post a NA. In my opinion it is never OK to log a NM or a NA without searching for the cache yourself. It's rude and disrespectful to the owners who have spent time and money hiding something for you. I think you will understand this better when have hidden some caches of your own. .
  8. Because of this I highly recommend using a screenshot. I always do if the cachepage concerns a puzzle.
  9. I agree. I recently placed a cache that is near parking off of a developed path. The cache is on a social trail - flat, no under brush about 20 feet off of the main trail. I generously rated this cache a 2 terrain and sure enough right off the bat I was told it should be a 3. This is a cache that should take about 15 minutes round trip. Not complaining, just sayin'.
  10. Yeah, me too. I find it hard to believe that there is some unfound object of that size. It seems no matter how far off trail I go and discover some cool thing (and place a cache there, natch ) someone will invariably log, "I've always loved this place". Still it's possible. I'm sending good thoughts that he's OK but at this point it looks grim. If he has passed, I hope they find his body soon to give closure to the family.
  11. And have been all week as has the rest of the country. Frankly, if no one here hasn't figured it out yet it ain't gonna happen. I do appreciate your junior modding but I think I'll add comments as I see fit. That's not true. Check out the many tests they've been put through. The Mythbusters, for example, failed to throw dogs off despite every sneaky thing they could think of. But even if it were true, they should have sent them in first considering they had a starting point and her scent.
  12. Update. His possible whereabouts? This is starting to sound suspicious. If his daughter could remember all those details about that structure she could surely remember where she came out and how long she had been walking since she left him. I hate to suggest it but maybe she got tired of waiting for her inheritance. And why didn't they use tracking dogs?
  13. It will always be a bit of a challenge. Hide what you like, don't let others opinions influence you. These forums do not reflect the average cacher in my opinion. Some things to consider: Make sure that your container is positively waterproof. Recycled house or food containers rarely are. If possible use write in the rain paper. This will save you lots of maintenance issues.
  14. Not a record but "Did You See Any Snodgrass?" has been unfound since placed 03/28/2009.
  15. The fact that all of the cache containers are identical is irrelevant. Plus you moved the logs.
  16. It's not a traveling cache. It's replacing an existing cache container and log with another one (albeit used). The difference is....the coordinates keep changing with a traveling cache. In this case, a log and container remain at the GZ for a cacher to sign. It's a matter of semantics I guess. Suppose I were to place a cache at the start of a powertrail that was a bottle preform that I had painted red and I called that cache 'Red Preform'. After a few runs the actual coordinates for that cache container would be miles away. Anyone using my hints would be baffled. My cache would have indeed traveled. Moving cache containers is wrong, imho.
  17. I don't like the new "features" either... ... or cut and paste logs for that matter.
  18. Picking up someone else's cache, carrying it 528', and plopping it down is, in no way, insignificant. If I found some mook moving my caches hundreds of feet I'd probably sock 'em in the snoot. The creators of this blight on the geocaching landscape seem to be OK with such deviant practices. How about the creators of the alien head series? Presumably all their caches have been moved as well. Would they say that such a moronic approach to this game was "insignificant"? Apparently, the cache owner has authorized this. The owner does not have that authority. Traveling caches are prohibited by Groundspeak.
  19. Team C rides a bike 100 miles faster than anyone has before and calls it a running record.
  20. Just keep it unpublished until you hide another cache and recycle it by changing the info (coords, etc). In the meantime change the coords to the middle of the ocean so as to keep from blocking others in that area. I do it all of the time.
  21. Except he wasn't geocaching. Serious question, how would you feel if I came to your town, found one of your caches and rather than replacing it just carried it with me to the next cache and left it there? I have no desire to do a power trail - it seems boring but I could care less if others do it and have fun with it. But if you are going to claim a geocaching record you should at the least stick to the rules of the game.
  22. grrrrr nevermind, I was trying to respond to another topic. Mods feel free to close.
  23. The thread was still on topic as of post 5. I gave a detailed explanation of how I would log (or not). Your refusal in this thread to acknowledge your mistake or to at least consider it contributed to the hijack. Honestly, your last post came off as being pouty about being corrected. It was inappropriate to request archiving for either of the caches as the owners are still active. Further, the Voting Is Cool! cache has been out since 4/6/2002. But as so often happens in forums, the OP digs their heels in and sticks to their own opinion against the good advice of the community. When you get around to hiding some of your own caches you will feel a bit different about this issue. ETA:Edited ~spelling
