Are Firmware Updates "Pre-Planed" in Advance?
cobra-ak replied to Didjerrydo's topic in GPS technology and devices
Maybe some things engineer to manufacture smooth, maybe some things don't. Deadlines, spare parts shortages, concessions with the manufacturers, price considerations maybe weigh in also. -
Any Way To Install Garmin Mapsource To Hd?
cobra-ak replied to MWPinSD's topic in GPS technology and devices
Outstanding! I still utilize the old topo for recreational boaters it still rocks, much more marine stuff than 2008. Man the maps haul a** now when you zoom in. Thank you! -

My Second Report on the Colorado 300
cobra-ak replied to Barrikady's topic in GPS technology and devices
I like the screen size but I like the "cellphone" discrete type appearance of the Vista HCx. The screen should be able to light your way in the dark being that its a handheld used for trails and such. Good report -
Anywhere in the USA or Europe the satellite view is much finer, as you go to other parts of the world it becomes coarser. YMMV
-
I still got the old Topo and this thread is awesome. thanks

You guys in Colorado are lucky, good work on the nice maps.
-
Here is a side by side photo. The colorado has nice grafix and a big screen, but with the poor back lighting what's the point. The screen is hard to see, day, night, inside and outside. In the pic both have brand new batteries and the backlight is turned all the way up. I don't think a software update can fix this. And one more thing, notice the colorado not showing the street names. I like that big screen but the Colorado looks like it is in the "outside beta tester" phase.

Blurrier sounds good to me, but I am gonna play with the settings and see.

View is pretty fuzzy too

Google Earth shows up but is it real slow to finally focus?

Topo USA had marine data, for a recreational boater it was enough. Topo 2008 had no marine data at all. On the + side once you upload to a computer you did not need the DVD anymore, and of course the street detail was updated.

It seems that setting the Map detail to Most the detail will kick in about .3miles but if I switch back to my preloaded USA Topo it will clutter like crazy so I switch the Map detail back to Normal. Problem more or less solved, always learning that maps are different.

Just got the preprogrammed direct from Garmin, my business takes me to SaoPaulo and Rio de Janeiro so it helps in cities totaling 32 million inhabitants and great expanse. I plugged the micro-SD into my Vista HCx and checked out the maps. To get street detail I had to zoom down to 500 feet, I know with Topo and WorldMap the detail would click in about .3 miles. Is this normal for City Navigator maps? I kinda am used to the bigger picture of detail like Topo 2008. thanks for the patience with the dumb questions.

Garmin rules!

City Navigator NT/Topo 2008 Vista HCX
cobra-ak replied to fastback67's topic in GPS technology and devices
All Garmin maps are not the same, I posted a dumb thread where I thought my waypoints were "drifiting" but it was the maps, one landmark on one map would not be "exactly" where the landmark would be shown on another map so my waypoints were as much as 2000 ft off in some instances in relation to the same landmark on different maps. That is why I hope for one day to have satellite images worldwide no more maps something of the order of Google maps hybrid views. -
Dumb question. Do waypoints on GPSr drift?
cobra-ak replied to cobra-ak's topic in GPS technology and devices
Problem solved! Map sets! Different map sets (Topo 2008, World Map, etc) will show major landmarks in different places. Example an airport near me on one mapset will show the airport near a tower while the other mapset may show it on top of a runway, as you zoom in "My" waypoint will be on top of one in one mapset, but say 500 feet away in another mapset.
