  9. I have had a couple of scary situations while hunting down caches. I actually had a couple of scares on the same day. While heading to Arizona with my daughter to help her pick up the last of her belongings as she moved back to California we stopped a few times to go caching. One of the first desert caches we came to was the dirst scary one. We had about a 1/2 mile hike/walk to the cache site. Once we got there locating the cache was quite simple as the coordinates were dead on. The scary part was when I lifted the cache (a flat metal tin box). As soon as I had it off the ground I saw it, a large SCORPION!!! Needless to say, I stepped back and fell on my rear which caused my daughter to burst out laughing until she saw the scorpion skitter out of its hideout under the cache. Once we regained our composure we grabbed the camera and followed it taking pictures and probably annoying it. About 100 miles further down the road to Phoenix we stopped for another easy cache find in a man-made desert wash. The wash was full of smaller rocks (all about 10-15 pounds) all along the sides. Following the GPSr it pointed me right to the middle of the oposite side of the wash. We headed over to GZ and when we were about 10 feet away we heard it! The distinctive sound of a rattlesnake rattlin his rattle! Since we were standing amidst these little boulders the footing wasn't too good and AGAIN I stepped back (after hearing the snake) and fell on my backside. This time my daughter had heard it too and did not start laughing but did help me to get up. We found a large stick and slowly approached the area the GPSr was pointing us only to hear the rattle sound again. The rocks were about three layers deep all around and we could not see where the sound was coming from. Being the crazy cachers we are we proceeded to flip over rocks using the stick to try and locate the cache. We had just flipped over one particularly large rocks when we saw the snake! It was a BIG one, about 6 foot long and very thick. Hearing it was scary, but when we saw it we both levitated out of the wash and found ourselves back at the cachemobile almost instantly. Needless to say we did NOT find that cache that trip, and have been back there three other times to try and find it. One other time the snake was still there and the other two we were so cautious and freaked out by the previous run-ins with the snake that we stopped before we could find it... Sorry, no pictures of the snake, but I did get a video of where the sound was coming from, on the video you can hear the rattle of the snake... Link to video/audio of rattle snake
  10. I've been wondering the same thing... I can't seem to find any posts from Rod since November and it seems like most everyone else has abandoned this thread. I figured once Winter set in this place would be jumpin'.. Guess not....
  11. I'll go with the New Orleans Saints (who knocked out my Vikings ) with a total combined score of 44 points (After all isn't it Super Bowl #44?)...
  12. Thanks for running this great cointest Opalsns! And especially thanks for choosing my submission as one of the winners!!! I know that I haven't been around the forums as much lately, but we've been having a bunch of life problems around here lately. Nothing real serious, just things that make you have to jump through hoops just to get a little bit ahead, almost feels like I've been trying to run through quicksand. It really is a good feeling to be able to leave here for a bit and then come back and be welcomed again. I don't think I have ever been a part of a community like the one here; and for that I am grateful. I would also like to take a minute and thank everyone for sending their well-wishes and prayers for Diana's upcoming back surgery. She has read everything that everyone had posted and all the emails too and I know she appreciates it as well as myself. Thanks again everyone!!!
  13. WORRIED Diana (Johnslady56) is scheduled to go under the knife on Monday to repair a herniated disc in her lower back. I just hope that everything goes OK with the surgery. She is putting on a brave face for it, so I guess it is up to me to be the worrier this time...
  14. I am sure you will all recognize my son cat, Max. He is the one whos' picture I use for my avatar. We've always had at least one cat in every house we've ever lived in, I couldn't imagine a home without a cat in it. Anyways, back to Max, he is a purebred fawn abyssinian but is not quite show quality due to a small kink in the end of his tail and some little bits missing from his ears. We got Max from the local shelter about eight years ago where they estimated his age at about 8 months old. He and about 30 or 40 other cats were rescued from a breeder/hoarder who had run afoul with the local law enforcment agents and was placed in jail (nothing to do with the cats). All those kitties were left to run loose in this womans house for over a month with no one to attend to them. There were numerous dead cats and kittens in the house and of those still alive only a few were without serious medical problems. When the shelter folks were called in they were appaled at the conditions of most of the cats and kittens and they rounded them all up and took them back to the shelter where a team of local veterinarians had volunteered their time to speed up the processing and treatments. Out of the 30 or 40 cats and kittens that were rescued only a handful survived and Max was one of them. My daughter was volunteering at the shelter at the time and had told me the story of this rescue with tears in her eyes. She had known that I have always had a fondness for abyssinian cats and told me that there were a few of them from this rescue. I immediately headed over to the shelter and began checking out these kitties. When I got to the cage that Max was in, he was curled up in his little cardboard bed in the corner of the cage, but when he saw me he immidiately got up out of his little bed and began to cry and rub the bars. My daughter was with me and told me that he never left his bed on his own, this was the first time he did that. It was love at first sight for the both of us. I headed right over to the shelter office and told them I wished to take him home. They told me about the limited history of him and also told me that he was still in quarantine but that I had a good chance of adopting him oncce he was cleared medically. A couple of days later they called back and told me that if I was still interested I could adopt him, as soon as I hung up the phone I headed to the shelter and had adopted him 30 minutes later. Since then we have been inseperable, he follows me wherever I go in the house and always comes running whenever I come home from work, he even sleeps with me in the bed every night either curled up next to me or between my feet under the covers when its chilly. He is the smallest kitty we have ever had (barely 6 pounds at 8 years old) and he is also the highest energy kitty we've ever had. He is such a great companion and is very smart. We've trained him to walk on a leash, ride in a car and has no problems taking a bath every month. So thats my story about my son cat Max... Now for a few of my favorite photos.... One of Max's favorite things to do; he sits in this plastic trashcan that we store birdseed in right next to the big sliding glass window to our patio where we have a couple of bird feeders hanging (see the seed on the ground outside?). He waits there patiently until the birds start coming around in the morning and then POPS out of the trashcan and scares them away. And yes, he is an indoor only cat (unless we are out for a walk on his leash). Max's favorite resting place, right on top of an old CRT monitor where it is ALWAYS warm... Here is Max hiding in a paper bag inside of the recycling bin. He scared the **** out of my girlfriend from here when she walked by. She didn't know that he was in there until this little paw came shooting out and hit her in the leg... OK, enough about my boy.... I love reading all these storries and seeing all these pictures, thanks for a great cointest!!! Who's next????
  15. Bummer, I had to work today so I didn't get to watch my Vikings conquer those Texas Cowboys or get in on this cointest... At least my team has still got a shot at making it to the Superbowl!!!
  16. Sorry for your loss. Having lost a couple of friends to cancer and with my half sister being a survivor I would be interested in a couple of them myself. I really like the idea of using some of the money from the coins' sales to help the ACS, and the coin is a great design. Not trying to be disrespectful or anything as I understand where your idea came from, but what if you were to remove your brothers name and dates from the coin and left it as a blank engravable area so that people who purchase this coin could have them custom engraved with a friend or loved ones name and dates? Either way, you can count on me for at least 2 or 3 of these coins...
  17. Howlingmoon, send me your address and I will get the mission in the mail to you for your 600th find milestone!!! And as promised, here is a picture of the milestone mission coin and the awesome Quebec 2008 coin that kini_ont sent to me...
  18. I actually DID complete this one!!! I found my 2000th cache find on December 30th, with only one day left! Now I have a couple of resolutions for 2010: 1. Quit smoking! 2. Live a healthier lifestyle 3. Get to 3000 cache finds by December 31, 2010
  19. All went as planned and I hit my goal of 2000 finds on December 30, 2009 with just one day left as a buffer. And yesterday I received the mission coin and a special gift coin from kini_ont!!! I will try and take a picture tomorrow morning of both coins and post it up here. We went out today and added a few more caches to the count (33 finds) to start on my goal of 3000 finds by the end of 2010. I will dip the mission coin into my 2000th find cache and then await word from the next milestoner... So, who's gonna be next???
  20. We (Myself, Johnslady56, and Tamster56) might very well be interested in the cruise! You might want to try and contact Rockin' Roddy regarding getting cruise pricing as he is the one who has set up the geocaching cruise from GeoWoodstock this year. As for my resolutions, since I have never really stuck to them when I make up a whole list of them I am only going with two this year: 1. Stop smoking (working on it by cutting back and becoming more aware of when and why I smoke) 2. Live a healthier lifestyle (which of course includes the smoking cessation and other things like excersing and eating better)
  21. Woo Hoo!!! I made my 2000th find yesterday!!! We actually made a total of 100 finds during the day, which is also a record for me and which also boosted me up over the 2000 finds mark! Can't wait to receive the mission... And I have set my goal for next year at 3000 finds by year end...
  22. It is NOW.... Really nice looking coin!!!
  23. I just got a notification today that one of my coins that was missing was found again after 16 months!!! I guess we should all listen here and never give up hope on those missing coins....
  24. Congrats on the new cachewagon!!! I'll jump in here with a couple of suggestions... Sunrise - Since your are sunsetmeadowlark... Chevan - Since it is a Chevy Suburban... Robert already grabbed my third one... Good job Robert.... MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
