  1. I've never seen the cold start problem tho' I've not enjoyed the conditions required. However I have got problems with my unit locking up. Garmin have suggested doing a reset, but the system locked whilst it was subsequently reacquiring satellite data. I'm not convinced that the reset resets everything as some user data stayed put and it only took a couple of minutes to switch from the satellite screen to the map... I have had a good look through the forums and not seen anyone else wit this issue but there has been talk last year about problems resulting from poor memory card contact but not with the HCx. Typically this was the card somehow being jolted out of the locked in position. I have also wondered if there's an issue with the maps loaded and I'm about to have separate cards for Topo and City Nav to se what happens. I'd be interested in discovering a harder reset than Page + Enter + Power On I understand that Page + Enter + Find + Power On just bypasses the confirmation dialogue. I'd expect the power up message to reset if the system had a real reset everything option... Given that the Cold Start issue seems to be fixed (tho' it sounds like they've wangled it by getting the unit to auto start twice should this be a new thread? I have had the same problem with the GPS locking up. I bought a Garmin Vista HCx and TOPO 2008 in early December from Amazon. The GPS would lock up while driving or if I was scrolling around the map screen. I tried the resetting the unit which did not help. I also removed the memory card and turned all logging options off but the GPS would still lock up. I contacted Garmin but all they told me to do was try the reset. I also contacted Amazon and they overnighted me a new replacement GPS and included instructions for returning the defective GPS using prepaid shipping. I am very happy with Amazons response. The new replacement unit has worked good with the exception that I did run into the washed out screen problem after I had left the GPS in the car overnight. I have updated the software and have not seen the problem since. I don't know if a software update will fix the lockup problem. You might want to try to get a new replacement GPS from the vendor where you purchased the unit or from Garmin.
  2. I have had the same problem. I left the GPS in the car overnight in a unheated garage and when I turned it on in the morning, the screen was washed out and difficult to see. I left the unit on for a while and then shut it off and restarted it and then it was okay. I have v2.4 installed and am using alkaline batteries. This is the second Garmin Vista that I have had. The first unit would freeze up during normal operation so Amazon replaced the defective GPS with this one.
  3. I bought a Vista HCx about 2-3 weeks ago and the unit kept freezing up on me. I contacted Garmin both by their online form and by sending them a email at techsupport@garmin.com and the only response I received was that I should reboot the unit. Overall, their service was very poor. I had already tried resetting the unit, removing the memory card, turning off track logging, etc... I googled the freezing problem and it looks like at least a few other people have had the same problem. Luckily I bought the GPS from Amazon and when I emailed them, they overnighted a replacement to me and included instructions for returning the defective GPS prepaid UPS. The replacement unit has worked with no problems.
  4. We just had a new cache published at the former Tiffany Mtn. lookout site (GC15JAP). At 8245 ft, I think it might be the highest physical cache in Washington state. It is about a six mile round trip hike to the cache.
  5. Thanks all for the quick response. I just removed the cache listing from my ignore list and reset the queries. I will let you know if I have any further problems. Thanks again - Marvin
  6. Thanks for the informative reply. I will send an email to the cache owner to see if he can take a look at his listing code. The problem might not be with the PQ itself but it could be that Mobipocket might be running into a piece of code that it does not like. I need to look at the PQ with GSAK and see if I get the same results. Thanks a lot.
  7. I am having problems with two PQs, one for Winthrop WA (zip 98862), and the second for Omak WA (98841). The area of these queries overlap and share many of the same caches. Both queries only output several pages of hints and then truncates the rest of the hints after the cache GC96E8. I looked at the PQ with Mobipocket v4.9 on both my PocketPC PDA and on my laptop. On both systems, the hint for GC96E8 has several "A" characters with a carrot over them. I went to the GC96E8 cache description on the Geocaching web site and checked the "Ignore listing" box and regenerated the PQ with the "Are not on my ignore list" box checked. With this configuration, the PQ seemed to generate the hints correctly. It appears that there is a problem with the GC96E8 cache that is causing a problem with the PQ. I looked at the cache page and did not see any unusual characters. If anybody has any ideals about this, please let me know. Thanks
  8. Instead of an easy chair, you could use the seat of an outhouse as the trigger.
  9. GC7C3 is near Squaw Valley and the PCT according to it's description. To find caches along a route like this, I run a pocket query for the area and then import the listing into TOPO! California. Then it is easy to see caches along your route. Otherwise, use the GC7C3 as a starting point and then look for the nearest caches that appear to be near your route.
  10. Heres one from the April 16 Jim Borgman "Zits" cartoon. Checkout the last panel.
