If you hunt with the Nuvi in the car and want to coordinate with a second GPS, it is nice to specify the GC code. My solution: #3 change ********** # Set the waypoint name here for widescreen and smallscreen: Vsub status=off $waypointnamesmallscreen = "%ShortName=7/%typ=3/%found/%code%bug=* " $waypointnamewidescreen = "%ShortName=14/%typ=3/%found/%code%bug=* " ********** to ********** # Set the waypoint name here for widescreen and smallscreen: Vsub status=off $waypointnamesmallscreen = "%code/%ShortName=7/%typ=3/%found/%bug=* " $waypointnamewidescreen = "%code/%ShortName=14/%typ=3/%found/%bug=* " vsub status=on *********** I would love to see these changes implemented within the macro, instead of hacking the macro. Will look forward to any feedback. Paul
  2. If you have (1) iphone, (2) gsak, (3) webspace somewhere, the iPhone is great. export to html, ftp it to your website and you have -A- condensed log, description, hint, nearest cache, etc. data, -B- Link to sat view of the cache -C- link to full description on Geocaching.com. If you have 1-3, know how to use an ftp program, know how to use gsak to pull out the data you want to FTP, I think the iPhone is great as a paperless cache tool. Paul
  3. Bill, I am pretty new to caching, but in what way is the iPhone limited? I port out a ton of info to the web and can read it very quickly on the road, also can easily click over to the original posts on geocaching.com, and use google maps to view the caches from sats or in map view. The only problem I could forsee is if there were no cell coverage, but so far I haven't run into that. Now it won't function as a GPS, nor do routing, but I have a NUVI and eTrex that do that. I cached today and hurt my achiles tendon so I used GSAK to pull up local caches that have a 1 terrain and a 1 or 1.5 difficulty. Popped them on the web for the iPhone and downloaded to my eTrex the coordinates and short info. What am I missing? Paul
  4. John, don't give up on the iPhone idea. I have been playing around with GSAK, space on a server and and etrex and have been getting dialed in on a technique that works well. It takes a bit of playing around wth GSAK, but I have been creating filters that select caches I want and then have been uploading them to a web server I use. The iPhone goes to the site and shows me the logs, clues, etc. I have tried looking at these pages on a non-iPhone smart phone and the performance is not so hot. The beauty of this is I can create different pages for different areas or types of caches and the update is very easy. Now you could load all this information into a large memory card, but how about the easy access to sat maps as well? The iPhone has it's shortcomings, but to be honest, I cannot imagine anything with more utility if used with custom web pages generated by GSAK. Paul
  5. My no regrets so far setup is a Nuvi 650 for navigation to the cache and a Garmin Etrex with the high sensitivity receiver for on-foot travel. The Nuvi is handy in that it can accept a ton of custom POI's with some room for some text clues and I can upload up to 500 points into the Etrex. The new Colorado is tempting, but to be honest, it doesn't actually do anything that will improve over what I have. At least that's what I am telling myself as it is definately a cool toy. Paul
  6. Brian and Amanda, I don't know what to say other than "Darn I didn't know about the wap site." Had I known I am not sure I would have bothered with posting my own data to the web. On the other hand, my list is specific to the caches I want to post. Thanks very much for the info! Paul
  7. Good idea, but maybe I'm missing something... can't you just browse to gc.com with your iphone? I can't imagine what would be more ideal in the paperless world than having full access to the website! The advantage of putting up your own private html is that you can include only the areas and caches of interest. This makes it easy to find the cache info you want. Less graphics/ads, etc. Faster download to a portable device. The data is inclusive in the iPhone monthly rate, but in the event you were paying $/KB this is an advantage as well. Paul
  8. I just checked... A red pin. The pin is tagged with the lat/lon of the point. Paul
  9. I have been a little frustrated reading about the paperless caching and not being able to do it on my iPhone. I recently found, however, that the GSAK software will export HTML. I placed the HTML output on the web and can browse to in on my iPhone. Because it is textual and not graphic, the pages load quickly and I am NOW PAPERLESS ---- YEA! To make it even cooler, a touch on the link to the google maps brings up the map feature of the iPhone that will show a street or sat image of the cache location. Not as cool as a 22 inch monitor, but then again it fits in my pocket and can be used just about anywhere. Paul Contact me if you have any questions! PJ
  10. Hope you don't contact my gas and electric company with ideas like this... If you want to pay more, I bet they would accept the money and if they don't have a channel to accept more money you could always register a few more accounts and pay that way. I for one and happy paying as little as I do. With the cost of simply living going through the roof, including fuel to drive from cache to cache I am happy to find one thing I enjoy doing where it doesn't feel like someone has their hand in my pocket. I will support Groundspeak by maintaining my membership and buying from their store. If the price goes up too much they are likely to lose that. Paul

    DNF Protocol

Don't get me wrong about the DNF. I have no problem marking a DNF. Currently I have one DNF out there - after converting the one mentinoed at the top of this thread to a note. It will stay a DNF until I either find the Cache, or the owner tells us it's missing. I understand a DNF is good to tell the hider that it's possibly missing, or tell other hunters it may be a tough one! A DNF tells me to go back and try again, and I don't need that marker to tell me to go look for a missing cache. I am new here, and am very pleased to see how much user interaction there is, and how decent everyone seems. Cool. Some of these internet boards are rouigh, glad to see all seem friendly here. Paul

    DNF Protocol

I suppose there are no hard and fast rules on this matter. Personally I think of a DNF as a challange to make right. I don't have a problem with indicating DNF as long as it is there to find. When I first marked the location as DNF, I assumed it was there to find. Now that I know it isn't I will change my DNF to a comment. Later if and when the location becomes active again, I will re-hunt it. At that time I will restore the DNF or, hopefully the find. It seems to me that you cannot indicate DNF OR Found if it isn't there. Paul

    DNF Protocol

I guess that's my problem, It feels like a bit of a demerit. Paul
  14. I DNF'd a cache. The cache was later determined to be missing. Should I keep it listed as a DNF, or change it to a comment? Not that I am expecting a prize or anything, but I hate to keep a DNF on my record if it wasnt there to find. This is the cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...86-e0d1e5f6dc49 Thanks for the advice. Paul
