  1. I went on vacation in KY last month, had no problem taking the GPSr on the plane in my carry-on. However, during the little "safety lecture" that you always get, the attendants did include it in the list of items you are NOT allowed to use at any time during the flight. It's also listed in their rules in one of the booklets/mags in the seatback pouches. This was on American Airlines, may be different on other carriers.
  2. I have a coin that has gone MIA from a small event two and a half months ago. After the event, there were 4 trackables that weren't "retrieved" - my coin, another coin, and 2 TBs. I wrote to the owner asking about my coin, since he was the one who dropped it. He didn't have it. At the beginning of July, he archived the event, still showing the trackables in inventory. I think it would have been nice if he had marked the items as missing when he archived it. I guess I should have known better than to release such an interesting coin ....
  3. unfortunately, I've never been able to see any of the token pictures the OP posts, they all come up as "IPB Image". o well.

    Website down?

yup, I was just writing a log for a cache visit, hit submit and Poof! it's gone, stupid error page. grrr. Hopefully it doesn't throw the geocoin I was dropping into some Black Hole somewhere. eta: IE isn't working, either.
  5. I wasn't out caching, but I saw these in my back-yard yesterday before I revisited a local Earthcache I live in the city, not densely populated but surrounded mostly by housing, so I thought it was pretty unusual. I'm hoping mama has decided to not come back, but they certainly didn't seem too frightened of me - I went out and made lots of noise etc to make it seem a little less inviting for them. I guess I'll find out - at least they weren't there when I got home from work today.

    Sick of timeouts

I haven't really had any problems before, but today I am. In both Firefox and IE, pages are taking forever and ever if they do load at all. I managed to log my 3 finds, by stopping/reloading, but had to go in and delete a couple of duplicate logs.
  7. If it was stolen from the very first cache you placed it in, why would the thief have bothered to"watch" it ? He or she didn't need to watch to know where the coin was moved to after that, because obviously they would know if they stole it. If nobody but your friend saw it before you placed it, then no one else would know to "watch" for it. The person watching the coin could have been the cache owner, just wanting to follow coins that passed through his cache. It could have been someone who saw it after you placed it, but is one of those people who don't "discover" coins, they only log if they actually move them, but might still want to watch to see where it goes. Just because it was a new cache, that doesn't mean it couldn't be muggled. My first coin that moved out of state disappeared along with the entire cache, which had only been out about a week.
  8. I've been lucky with my hands so far, no cuts from reaching for a cache. Around here most everyone eventually gets a bit of "desert pinstriping" on their legs or arms. My worst so far was walking over some old barbed wire hidden in the tall grass/weeds. First time wasn't so bad, daytime, it just grabbed my shoe and the bottom of my pants leg got ripped. Second time I hit barbed wire, night caching, it wrapped around my left leg (ripping my jeans and taking a nasty bite on my shin) and and my right shoe = I face planted Havta protect the GPSr in my right hand and the flashlight in my left, ya' know ?
  9. There is a lost TB by the name of General Speaky, he's been MIA, last known location was near San Francisco in April 2007. Here is a link to his page (I hope) The General How cool that you rescued him, but what a place to find him.
  10. Hi, dixiedawn here, real name Debbie, from Arizona. I'm new to the forums, and still fairly new to geocaching - made find #63 today. I definitely qualify on the number of coins owned. I "own" four, all released at the end of January 08. However, two have disappeared from a cache without being logged, and one disappeared along with the entire cache container, so I only have *one* that is still out there, at least on Mar 9th. I guess I got into geocaching as another way to enjoy the outdoors. I've lived in this area for so many years, and been to most of the interesting areas - or so I thought. Geocaching has given me a new interest in exploring, and I've found places I didn't even know existed. My question, well, is it too soon to lose hope on the two MIA coins ? It probably is, I know of a coin that was picked up by someone at a cache earlier that same day that I visited(said so in physical log) 6 weeks later they finally logged that they had found it "a couple weeks ago" at a different cache Ok, different question, why is the Moun10bike coin so popular ? What's the story? I'd like to get more coins, but I don't know if I'll take a chance on releasing any more into the wild unknown. Oops, is that the beginning of a new addiction of collecting?
  11. I have 6 trackables out there, mmm, apparently make that 4 now. One Generic Geocoin made one move about 117 miles to the next city, and disappeared into a black hole, I guess. Actually, I have a better guess than that ... but I'll leave it at that, no accusations. Just found out today that my Candy Cane coin was "lost" when a cache was muggled. The entire container is MIA, owner moved my coin to Unknown. Worrying about the status of two more. I'm not sure if I will send out more or not, right now I'm a little disillusioned. Hey, reality check, I know. Hope for the best but expect the worst... eta: Are you supposed to receive a log email if someone puts the TB or coin into "unknown location", because I didn't. I was just checking online and saw that on my TB list.
  12. Sounds like the same problem I had with my converter, laptop, and yellow eTrex. I would get error messages about no data , unable to connect, no USB hardware, etc etc. I checked the eTrex using the serial cable and my old PC, and it communicated fine with USAPhotomaps, so I knew it wasn't the GPSr. I'm not saying this would work for you, but it sure worked for me. I did a BIOS update on the laptop. My brother had me a little scared that I could do more harm than good, but it worked beautifully, even fixed a problem I was having with my mouse not responding very well. eta: The software I'm using on the laptop is GeoBuddy, I download selected waypoints to my laptop and then upload to the GPSr. I haven't tried the direct download to my eTrex yet, or pocket queries. I'm still learning my way around here, and don't want to overload myself
  13. Wow, that's quite a trip, congrats on the find. Funny thing about the yellow one I found, it only has 632 miles on it since July 04. Of course, it didn't move at all for almost three years.
  14. ack, that doesn't mean these red Jeeps would be blocked, does it ? Some of them are still moving regularly.
  15. I know this doesn't really harm anyone, but it's annoying all the same. A while back I came across one of the red Jeep TBs, and I was just curious as to where it's gone on to. I saw that it was discovered by someone, and his log said something about finding a whole fleet. Out of curiosity, I had to go look. It shows that he's found 15+ red Jeep TBs, and checking on them --- They are all logged the same day with the same log, they are in different states, and some of them have been MIA for months. Obviously, he never "discovered" the actual Jeeps. Are numbers really *that* important to people ? (I know, stupid question.) I have legitimately found one of each, red, green, white, and yes Yellow ! There are still a few left moving...
  16. Still pretty much a newbie, just made my 50th find today, and I confess most of my logs have been a little short. Most of the logs I had read from even very experienced cachers were, so I thought that was the norm. I have included some more personal comments, like when the geodog took an unexpected swim, but even that wasn't more than a few words. I did feel like "why would anyone else really care what I have to say" but now after reading this thread, I can see it from the CO point of view. If they've gone to all the work to come up with an imaginative hide, I should certainly be able to say more than "thanks for a fun hide, tnln" I will try to write more, and to that little voice inside me that say "why would anyone care..." well, that's what Delete and scrolling are for
  17. hmm, not exactly the same scenario, but I found a cache up in the nearby mountains. I "signed" the log, took a TB and dropped one off, and headed on my merry way. As I'm halfway down the mountain, and as a storm is starting to blow, I realize that I did write a note in the log, but I did not put my name. Hey, I'm still very new at this, it hasn't become habit yet. I did have a picture of the container with my GPSr so I added that to my online log as proof I was there, but I suppose some people would question that. Since then, there has been snow, rain, and flooding in the area. Would you consider that a legitimate log, or do I need to return when the weather is better, and put my name on that page of the logbook?
