  1. The trick might be to find ity on your way IN, not on your way OUT!
  2. INCORRECT! Tracts are nothing but advertisements. They are worth (financially speaking) less than the paper they are printed on. You are confusing cost and value... As far as advertising, I see business cards and coupons in caches all the time. Just saying.... You just proved his point. Business cards are not swag, they are more like a sig item...if even that. Just because you see them in caches doesn't make them of any intrinsic value, regardless of whatever cost is associated with them. I got it!! So I can leave a religious tract if I stamp my ID on it and turn it into a signature item!! Thanks for the idea! Just kidding - I am not planning to do this.
  3. about 1000 feet.... don't know why I haven't grabbed it yet.... I guess it just doesn't seem exciting or adventurous so close by
  4. I am not intending to preach but simply to answer your (I believe) honest question. The Bible says in many places that believers should go into the world to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in an effort to help others become saved in order to be able to go to Heaven when they die or when the rapture comes. Here is one example http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?searc...amp;version=NIV In Christianity, we are taught that this is our job, not to help ourselves become more secure in our beliefs, but because we believe that Jesus wishes fo rus to help save others' souls through Prophesy. For the record, I have always had a religious mother, but didn't always go to church regularly. I used to be annoyed by religious tracts left on my door or mailbox. Now that I understand the meaning behind it, I understand why people do it. They believe in their hearts that they are helping others. Now they don't annoy me anymore, even when they are from religions that I don't agree with.
  5. I am with the OP. At this point in my life (a four year old, and a 1 month old) I am not usually able to go out that much. Typically I will get about 4 hours a month to go... Usually it is on the weekend, after I lay my son down for his nap... then I beg mommy for a pass to head out for a few hours. We camp a lot, so during the summer months I try to take the opportunity to find some when we go on vacation. My son is almost ready to do this with me, but not quite able to stick with it long enough to go for anything other than really easy finds. Every time I feel frustrated I imagine the day when the kids are 7 and 11 or older and can't wait to go with me, when we can run all over God's creation all weekend long. I am hoping that I am not setting myself for disappointment later on, but this is my goal. Hang in there.
  6. As many ior as few of the following as needed: reflective safety vest, white hardhat, a palm to enter data into, an amber revolving light on white pickup truck, and a pair of the following magnetic door signs on said truck: I guess I like the cloak and dagger stuff, but I choose to be sneaky by being obvious.
  7. NEVERMIND - started this thread and hadn't seen the other one... Please ignore, and excuse! I'll go flog myself with my GPS strap 30 times and restrict myself to only LPCs for 2 weeks.
  8. While this may be true, I'd rather not give the LEO any reason to (1) be more suspicious or (2) hate Geocachers. I also like getting home on time for dinner. I just don't see any reason not to comply and present your ID if asked to do so - unless you are a criminal with outstanding warrants... then I understand.
  9. Not that long ago, my GeoBuddy and I were visited by a local police officer. Turns out we were just returning from a cache that was placed a little closer to a Northrop Grumman facility than the officer was comfortable with. It wasn't on their property, but in the woods on the side of the public road leading to their property. I can assure you, that the only card he was interested in was my Driver's License. Having said that, we offered him an explanation and gave him a brouchure, and after writing down all our information in a notebook, he still seemed hesitant. Since we had already found the cache I offered to show it to him to offer more evidence that we were legit. He grabbed a camera and followed us to the site, where I slowly retireved and opened the ammo box to expose a collection of bagged plush toys and various trinkets. This was the first smile we saw, and then the conversation drifted more to... "so, if I wanted to find out how to do this, I can just go to this website here?" We apologized for causing him trouble, and went on to more in the area. We figured he knew what we were up to now, so might as well! Funny part was, just last week my buddy (who lives in that area) emailed me the following message: I was browsing the local police reports online. I found this: "Sykesville Police Department, Friday, November 28, 2008, Officer responded to Route 32 North of Sandosky Road for reported suspicious condition." I'm pretty sure that was our geocaching experience. Too funny! Mom! Dad! I am in the papers!
  10. Probably too soon for that particular story, but as someone who loves crime/detective,CSI type stuff, I would LOVE this type of cache.
  11. TOO FUNNY Gryffyth!! I am flattered. I guess I am now a national company! I can't wait until the day when I run into someone else who works for my company. That will really make me laugh myself to death if it ever happens. This is too good. For the record, I ordered mine off the net... here is a link to the the website. They were about $70 for the set of two (yes, I am an idiot). I ordered 12"x24" and had them within about 10 days. http://www.buildasign.com/MagneticSigns
  12. I... I must... I need... OMG THIS IS AWESOME!!! *hehe* sorry, couldn't contain myself. I think I'll copy this, is that ok? Absolutely, I have been wanting to open a franchise in SoCal for a few minutes now... Enjoy! Edited to remove pic.
  13. That is truly brilliant. On Monday, I'm going to the magnetic sign shop. I may also have company t-shirts printed. (I'll remember to put a local telephone number on it.) Glad you appreciate my warped sense of humor. It actually works great as other geocachers get it right away and usually we will start a conversation, but the average muggle is clueless. The phone number on mine is for time/temp/weather in Charleston, WV. Edited to remove pic.
  14. As a 36 year old (tomorrow) father of a 4 year old, and one on the way, I can defeinitely see both sides. As a father, I would be wondering what the heck a man, alone, was doing crawling around playground equipment while my son played there. It wouldn't make me leave, or call the police, but it certainly would get my attention. As a 36 year old man, schoolteacher, harmless as a butterfly, I have every right to be there alone, and I don't really worry about a LEO questioning me should one be called. I would just level with him and show him what was up. However, I have avoided this in the past with the reflective safety vest, white pickup and clipboard. Also, I will initiate a conversation with the adults in the area, and tell them that I am glad they are enjoying the equipment. I will then after a few minutes of looking, discuss with them that "we" love seeing their children enjoy the area, and like to keep the equipment inspected regurlarly for safety. Seems to eliminate 95% of the staring. If I really want to snow them, I will even whip out the hardhat! Edited for bad spelling.
  15. For me, I will sometimes use the previous logs to help me locate a cache through inferences I can draw, before I go to the hint (if I need it). I would hate to read the answer to the problem before I am ready to give up. I guess if everyone who was planning to post a spoiler did so with the words "SPOILER:" in front of it, I could at least live with that and skip over their post. I haven't placed a cache yet, but when/if I do, I wouldn't want the spoiler out there to ruin the hard work that I went to in camo or placement. Overall, I would vote against spoilers in the logs.
  16. THANK YOU! Now I know what to call myself. This is totally me. In fact there are a few puzzle caches (which so far I have proven to be miserable at) in my area that are preventing me from eliminating the "other than smiley" marks on my area map
  17. I don't use the arrow per se, as much as i use the map page. BUT, I do keep zooming in until my traingle is as close to the treasure chest as possible, then i usually turn it off to save battery power (because I am anal) and start looking. If I haven't located it after a few minutes, I will walk away from the area and approach it from another angle if possible, again using teh GPSr, and try to do a rough triangulation of GZ. Overall, I have found that I refuse to admit the error of both my and the hiders GPSr though, and end up trusting the electronic brain more than my own..... I am getting better at putting it away though...
  18. I compared the 60CSX with the VISTA HCX side by side before getting the Vista HCX (which has the compass and electronic altimeter - therefore making it feature-wise more similar to the 60CSX than the Legend). Anyway, I loved the clarity and brightness of the Vista over the 60CSX. Side by side it was far brighter and clearer (smaller screen, roughly same pixels=better clarity).
  19. Mine is: SE 319.3mi from your home coordinates... But I am hoping to improve on that!!
  20. Here are my designs - made to fit on 2 1/4" buttons... hopefully a few people may enjoy them.. I like them! I drop them whenever they will fit.
  21. I spent hours creating design for 2 1/4" buttons and made up a bunch of them - very tedious, but I already had the materials. I tried to make them humorous. I always drop one of these when it will fit in the cache container, but sign the log as well. I will not trade one of my buttons as swag, but usually treat it as an extra dropped item in case someone who collects that kind of stuff might think it was cool to collect. Here are the ones I generated - hope this works...
  22. I found my telescoping mirror at the local auto supply store.. pep boys, auto zone, etc.. should have them. I have a few great gizmos, many of which have already been mentioned. BUT, nothing works better to keep heads from turning my way way in a crowded parking lot than my safety vest, hard hat, and the following magnetic signs which are prominitely displayed on my white pickup (looks like a work truck):
  23. Having not published any of my own caches yet, i was wondering.... are the assignments for a GC# just random, or do any of the characters signify anything.... And Vinny, just because I grew up on Gambrill mountain from age 5-21 (lived about 2000' passed 4 forks (Gambrill and Highland School/Hamburg) I am hoping that I can be excluded from the no-doubt brilliant, yet completely fabricated response you are currently getting ready to bluff me with!
  24. Since you are still in Iraq, I had a thought... Regardless of people's opinions on the war, I think I would find it very cool to find some Iraq related SWAG in a cache. Perhaps instead of buying all your swag, you could bring home some neat little trinkets, coins, etc., that people might find interesting. I know I would value such neat items that you can't run across on an everyday basis back here. Just a thought.... Edited to add: I know the Vista HCX is a bit pricey, but if you do decide to go with it, you will love it! It is great. Regardless of what you buy, most people seem to suggest that you make sure it has the "H" in the name somewhere. The "H" signifies that it has a newer design, higher quality receiver that will enable better signals, and increase the accuracy.
  25. Too bad they ruled out the hanging chads, or Sioneva would've taken first place. Darn Florida residents....
