Nah, it wouldn't say anything about quality. Everyone ignores caches for entirely different reasons. Some people will choose to ignore caches that they are physically enable to do (which would probably the most desirable and challenging to others) Some people will ignore micros Some people will ignore specific hiders Some people will ignore a specific area, which is near a the crow flies, but a long driving distance Etc. The number of ignore requests does not indicate anything, and it certainly isn't a message to thecache owner that something is wrong about his cache. FWIW, I could imagine putting a cache on my ignore list AND on my watch list, guaranteeing that it will stop cluttering my nearest page, while still getting information about logs. I strongly recommend keeping the ignore function strictly private.

There is currently some uncertainty as to whether it's a mystery pole, a virtual pole or a locationless pole. As to who pays - the taxpayer, of course.

There was no disclaimer about flaming swords on the cache page. I think that should get him nailed. How about a class action suit?

Hey Hemlock! As I understand it, the coords lead to the first waypoint, where th coordinates for the 2nd waypoint are found. If there is something else to it, it's an.. uhh... mystery to me Thanks, I appreciate that! I could send you a list

EraSeek, you were merely the hider. It's not your responsibility. You should sue that guy who put that tempting mountain into your backyard. I mean, where does responsibility start?

I wish you would contact the cache owners to correct the mislabeling. If it is wrong it should be fixed. Jeremy, I have always thought that a cache labelled "puzzle cache" (like this one) cannot be changed into a multi, and that a cache labelled "traditional" (like this one here)cannot be changed into a puzzle, even if that is what they really are, even by the approvers, let alone by the cache owner himself. These are just two examples of many. I thought that mislabelled caches are just something we just have to live with, and that there is no way to do anything about them.

Fake Coordinates For Long-distance Multis
shunra replied to shunra's topic in General geocaching topics
actually it is a mystery-cache: Some multis get approved as puzzle-caches since you have to solve riddles on the trail however there is no worldwide standardised approving policy about mystery-caches: Some say that it's a mystery-cache if you have to do some calculations on the trail and others say it's only multi-cache So - take two caches which are absolutely identical and do not involve any puzzles. Cache A says: Your first waypoint is Nxx xx.xxx Wxxx xx.xxx (which are alos the posted coords) Cache B says: Your first waypoint is at 1234 Main Street in Mytown. The posted coords are bogus. No other difference at all. In either case, you get to count something, add it up to something, and go to the final. You know the type. Would you say that the first case is a multi and the second is a mystery cache? By the same token, I could put out some coords out in the Puget Sound, put a note book in my living room, just specify my address and inviter people to come and visit, and call it a mystery cache. -
There is a cache in Portland, OR, the cache page of which admits plagiarizing the idea. There is also a cacher here in WA who hid one of those in half a dozen libraries in his county, but he doesn't say that he copied the idea from someone else.

dadgum. Why didn't I think of that. I'll accept it as voluntary contribution. Let's call it Premium Membership of my GPS recycling program.

I think you're wrong about that. Electronic compasses point to the True North.... They sence the magnetic influence lines (or whatever the heck the name for them is called) A GPS would have a built in declination table and could (or should) be able to point at true north based on the table, or magnetic north depending on your settings. With a standard compass you have to allow for the declination to find True North. OK, thanks for the correction, RK and Poindexter. Learned something...

I think you're wrong about that. Electronic compasses point to the True North. Anyway, all GPSrs are obsolete now. I am opening a recycling plant. Please send me your old units for processing.

Magnetic poles actually move much faster, all the time. When you look at a topo map and it tells you what the angle is between True and Magnet North, it will usually mention the year, and how much you'll have to add or subtract as time goes by.

Fake Coordinates For Long-distance Multis
shunra replied to shunra's topic in General geocaching topics
Actually, the cache I'm talking works as follows: The first waypoint is described very accurately and unmistakeably - in words. At that location, some numbers need to be collected, which give you the final coords, which bring you to the final location, 25 miles away. If we ignore the distance, this sounds like a simple two-step multi, right? Except: the first waypoint is not indicated by coords, but described in words, unmistakeably and unambiguously, where you have to be and find those numbers. The posted coords might as well have been the posted coords, but for some reason the owner chose to describe the location and post fake coordinates instead. As a result, it got approved as a mystery cache - which it really isn't. I didn't intend to pick on this cache. I had some friendly correspondence with the owner, who moved the fake coords a few miles further away from me and closer to the beginning of the cache. When I asked him, I didn't realize that there was no real reason not to put them exactly on the first waypoint. FWIW, when I just started caching, I placed what I thought was a mystery cache, but it got approved as a multi, for exactly the same reason. The criteria posted by Hemlock make perfect sense, and I don't understand how so many caches get approved as puzzle caches, while they are actually multis. I spent some time last week trying my luck at solving a few dozen puzzle caches, hoping that I'll eventually get to find the physical cache. I was surprised how many puzzle caches were actually just multis, where you had to go somewhere, find some numbers, and move on. But that's another issue. -
Fake Coordinates For Long-distance Multis
shunra replied to shunra's topic in General geocaching topics
From the actual container, or from the first place one needs to physically visit? -
Now we didn't intimidate ya did we? Don't worry But everyone who is responding there is actually from the NW. Thanks to all for confirming my gut feeling.

If a multi cache starts in one state, and ends some 25 miles away in another state, should the fake coords be near the place where the final cache is located, or near the place where you have to go to to start foing the cache in the first place? And does the same apply to the 'State' designation? I'm asking because I hate it when caches show up next to me when I cannot do them.

Sorry - I meant to ask this in the general forum.

"do The Mods Intimidate The Posters?"
shunra replied to sept1c_tank's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm more intimidated by mob action than by mod action, but I'm trying to ignore that too. An annoying experience was that at one time I (and some others) were getting nasty below the belt comments from someone who (with his moderator moniker) was admonishing moderation to others in that same thread. But that was exceptional, and I'll just assume he was having a bad day. -
I thought maps were regenerated daily at 7 pm... That time has passed twice, and no checkmarks are visible yet. It's a constantly recurring problem. Four days, no updates yet. New caches are also not showing. Some new caches do show up now. Checkmarks in my finds are 7 days behind
-
Maybe it would be a good idea to go ahead and trigger a message to the owner. As an owner, I would be interested if people were wanting to ignore my cache instead of find it. I don't think so. This should be the one single log option which is entirely private. Moreover, it might be temporary: you could delete your ignore log after a while, like any other log.

Actually, it shows only the ones you found or own, and shows them as a simple box with a checkmark, without a traditional, multi, puzzle etc. symbol. Moreover, it does this even without the 'show archived' box clicked. However, if you then click that box, and then click 'identify', the old caches will suddenly show up in a list under the map. I think this is a bug, and that it never was meant to be that way.
