  1. FYI - you do not need orbiting satellites to use the GPS technology. GPS-like technology has been easily implemented in an earth-based form. This is the basis for LBS, etc that most "GPS Phones" actually use. This makes it more reliable than[bY;ing to receive a satellite signal.
  2. Last I checked, it was $420 for that model...a few weeks ago...
  3. On my first cache, I stamped coordinates on aluminum tags, and used small nails (about the size of a thumb tack spike) to attach to trees. I even camouflaged them with paint.
  4. public schools are public property...you can pretty much go there any time...take a tour sometime to see how your tax dollars are being spent...in fact, after school hours, you can use the playground, football field, etc (you can even use the field during football practice, etc since it is after hours and not a reserved event)
  5. FYI: Orignally, I had checked out Pelican's site about this light. They advertise the unit to be 74Lumens/20,000CP. Everyone on the net that sells them says 108Lumen/20,000CP. I called Botach and they said that was the spec given to them. Maybe Pelican goofed on the spec or goofed on the copy/paste on their website? Lumens and Candlepower are not easy to convert between the two. I believe you can convert CP to Lumens, but not the other way because CP is based on how "hot" the filament is.
  6. I wish they still sold it at that price..... They do! http://store.yahoo.com/botach/pelicanm6.html Just look up Pelican.... It is on sale for $29.95, regular $36.00. The deal you see on their front page is with 20 more batteries. Those batteries cost $8 in the Photo departments of most stores. Botach and Surefire sell the batteries for $1.25 each but you get 20 with the flashlight for $20 more.
  7. The first amendment is about FREEDOM of SPEECH. Not FREE SPEECH. So stop complaining and start your own forum with your own money. check out this link.... http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article....RTICLE_ID=29046
  8. The Maglite models are too bulky for me. I would rather carry a collapsible baton if I needed a club. Maglite 2D 16,000cp Maglite 3D 22,000cp Maglite 4D 24,000cp Maglite 5D 27,000cp Maglite 6D 30,000cp As for LEDs go, for $35-40, you can get an Inova X5 or for $119-164 you can get the SureFire L4 Lumamax. That has a 5Watt LED and only puts out only 65 Lumens!!! Since it is 5 W, the drain is much faster than the Pelican M6 3.6W Xenon which puts out 108 Lumens. The upside - LEDs have better lifespan than Halogen bulbs. Most high-brightness bulbs last 2-3 hours. The Pelican M6 advertises 260 hour bulb life. (WOW) The high power LEDs advertise 10,000 hour, and low power LEDs >100,000 hour. For dual duty, the TT-2L was nice, but does not form a spot beam. Plus I do not like the button near the lamp instead of the tail. The tactical lights DO double as defense tools, although not as a club. I prefer the non-bulky approach. I may also carry a gun or knife, and besides, I am trained in H2H/H2W/W2W. []
  9. I got a new flashlight today! I am very impressed. For Geocaching, I use the Energizer LED headlight as a primary, and a handheld tactical light as a secondary. The Pelican M6 Black Knight Tactical series light is a fairly new model and costs $30 at BotachTactical.com. (WOW!) Their 3V lithium batteries are $1 - $1.25 each. (SureFire sells them for $1.25 as well.) It came with a pouch too! This light is comparable to the high-end SureFire and Streamlight flashlights. It comes in Silver or Black. It is 20000cp/108Lumens!!!!!!! It focuses to spot beam and flood. It has a 1 hour runtime. Its pouch will work with the Scorpion and TT-2L as well. (Pouches are not available for the TT-2L yet, and the Scorpion pouches are backordered.) I have the following as comparison: Streamlight Scorpion - 6500 cp/35lumens $25, 1.5 hour runtime Focus to spot. My favorite caching light before I got the M6! I could search across fields at night with no problems. Streamlight TwinTask 2L - 13000cp/72lumens $30, 1 hour runtime on Xenon This has 3 LED and Xenon bulb modes for dual duty. Downside: the beam will not focus to a spot. I bought this light a few weeks ago and was disappointed. There is a 30 day money back guarantee, but I decided to keep it for a dual-duty light in my car. Inova X5 - fairly dim, yet seems to last forever! (about the same brightness as the TT-2L in LED mode) This is my backup Geocaching light. Oh yeah - they have great prices on GPS units there too!!! But not as good as OFFROUTE.COM!!! (I got my Vista and Mapsource from OffRoute. They are very helpful and nice. But, if they do not have what you are looking for, try Botach.)
  10. FYI: for super-micro o-ring sealed containers, CVS Pharmacy "GIVES AWAY (ie: FREE!)" their CVS-branded plastic keyring pillbox. I needed "one" and the guy gave me 6! So I use the rest for caches! There are better stainless-steel ones for a couple of bucks out there too.
  11. I cannot find this cache listed anywhere. I will not go looking for it unless I find it listed somewhere, sorry...
  12. It was introduced SEVERAL years ago, and discontinued in like less than 1 year.
  13. I use the match stick container found at Walmart - $0.86 each. They come in olive-drab or hunter-orange. Paint works wonders. Also, the diameter is slightly larger than 1" so a 1" drill and some shoving will make a nice concealed fit in other things.... And they have an o-ring seal. My first cache is in a swamp, and it ahs stayed dry even when submerged!
  14. I can see it now....along with the Poison Ivy icon, there will be used condoms, beer cans, needles, and homelss people "icons".
  15. Oh, sorry, I will try to take my used condoms with me next time.....haha But really, where about is Dallas is this?
  16. You can usually find them in the bow-hunting sections.
  17. http://www.mp2kmag.com/news.asp?NewsID=105 too bad it is "virtual"
  18. If it is really dark out, pretty dadgum far!! My coordinates in my cache lead to an area where one could see the reflector, but it could easily be 200' away! *hint* I can see it easily with one red LED on my Energizer headlight, but it really shows up with my Scorpion tactical light. Retro-reflective reflectors are great because the light is reflected almost directly back to the source of the light. The light does not reflect off of the planar surface. It reflects off of many little beads. The index of refraction of the beads allows light to bend inside, then reflect back out almost in the same path that it came in. Highway marker paint is dusted with larger beads to allow almost "parallel" reflection. Road signs are also retro-reflective. There is material available for sewing, tape, and ribbon (flagging tape). It is best to use this material rather than the paint+beads (unless you have a large area to paint) because the beads can clump together when applied. Edited to add: Bystanders will not necessarily see the light reflect from these reflectors because it reflects directly back to the source. Often times one must use a light at eye level or a full flood. There are retro-reflective tapes and thumtacks that also have a honeycomb pattern of mirroring that reflects away, causing better visibility to bystanders who may not have a light source. Without the light source, they look dull. I have seen BLACK during daylight, yet reflect white at night. (motorcylce helmet decals) And unless you are in direct path of the sun, you will not see a reflection during the day without your own light sorce. 19. I usually cache at night. The retro-relfective trail markers are neat and provide a cheap method to mark a trail. $2 for 50 thumbtacks at Walmart, or $3.50 for 50 of the cubic tacks, or $3.50 for 30 twist-ties, as compared to over $10 for 10 Firetacks (they are almost identical) I even have retro-reflective tape that I use to mark things. I also use a hole punch to mak different colored reflectors, cheaply, with standard thumbtacks. Do you think I am getting carried away with retro-reflective stuff?
  20. A gun is for self defense. What if a mountain lion was nearby? What if a robber was in the woods and wanted to rob him of his GPS and other valuables?
  21. For a micro, I use the match stick container at Walmart - O-ring sealed, bright orange (paint fixes that!) and ony $0.86.
  22. It was fun! It is a simple cache, but it was a lot of work. A lot of time and thought was put into it, but I think it turned out perfect!!!
