Detrimental behavior that affects geocaching as a whole
PhxChem replied to Kit Fox's topic in General geocaching topics
LOL....What? Am I getting a reputation? Ok, I do sometimes like to play devil's advocate...but I'm really not trying to fight. I see your point. It just seemed that you assumed that the poster didn't agree with your initial post, it MUST be because he promarily likes micros. There could be other reasons for disagreement. For example, a lot of people say "this [insert anything] will give geocaching a bad name." I guess because I don't see it in my local area, or it's such a small minority of caches, I don't think about it, and don't see a problem. Here in AZ, we also have many land management agencies that already have geocaching policies and are very receptive to caching. I guess we probably all overgeneralize things we see in our local area to the whole world of geo caching. (And for full disclsure, 3/5 of the caches I have placed require at least a 1 mile hike (Two of them placed at the top of the "mountains" we have around here.....just so you don't think I'm a micro lover!! ) -
Well, I've only been caching since November.....so, I'm not sure I can tell if it's been slowing down around here. Oh, also...I live in Phoenix, AZ.....it was 70 today. So, even around here...things don't get that slow (unless it rains). Although I've always thought that it might pick up around here in the Spring and Summer with the longer days.

Can I log this one......told ya'................ j/k

If you took a portable radio on the place and used it, do you think it'll get screwed up? Your GPS is like a radio......... Well, at least the bag would know where it is.........
-
Reminds me of the cache I found that was ACTUALLY BEEPING. Of course, any normal muggle would have....called the bomb squad. Turns out someone left a toy beeper as a trade item!! Luckily there wasn't a lot of muggle traffic....some random kids would have definitely found it. Something that can be turned on and off, or just makes a noise when someone touches it might work.

I'm not sure that's the entire reason it's not flying. I know I'm stepping out on a ledge (and on a couple of toes) but it's possible that people just don't like the idea....however innovative it may be. Or, as others have stated, that it can be accomplished with the tools already available.

Detrimental behavior that affects geocaching as a whole
PhxChem replied to Kit Fox's topic in General geocaching topics
So, if people agree with you, they like the "real" caches in the wilderness. If they don't, they must be enthralled with microswill (obviously)? Seems very......binary. Overly simplistic. Ummmmm.....no. -
I'm with nonaeroterraqueous on this. A lot of times I don't have time to return email from students, family, etc. There's no requirement that one return email if one possesses an email account. Geocaching?

Ummm....as someone said earlier, everyone has an agenda. I mean, you put there cache there for a reason, right? Well, my friend, YOU have an agenda. So that rule in quite nebulous...and probably that way on purpose so Groundspeak can judge the silly offenders from the serious. However, muggling this guy's cache, is going against the great Geocaching Spirit everyone here is dishing up....and it's an obvious violation of the rules of Geocaching.....no? Unless, of course, the way to save Geocaching from itself is to steal geocaches. If that were true, I'd be heading to lamp posts across the country!! Here's a comment from an approver on his cache page: Amazing!! Geocaching Spirit!! I'm not sure what the "threats" were because they were deleted. But maybe they were threatening to Geolove him to death.....maybe? The cache has not been archived......yet. I mean the cache is tasteless, rude, and insulting and is going to make this cacher a load of enimies...no doubt about it. But stealing from the cache or removing cache itself? Ignore...gossip...point...laugh....move on.

Wow, who new that increased your numbers?

Anyone else have a problem with Micro's
PhxChem replied to miuwu's topic in General geocaching topics
Ok, just so we can follow your prediction of this cataclysmic event, when do you think this will happen? Is this the plot to Cloverfield by chance???? And yes, let's get back to the good ole days......a can of beans in every cache I say!! Sometime I cache...and I'm HUNGRY!! The funny thing is, no matter how mundane, stupid, common, insipid the hide is, people will log them...lots o' people!! -
Click here For future reference it's under ->Member Features->Instanotification

Another possibility is that it is UNDER the plate with the bolts (under the skirt). There is usually a space between the metal plate and the concrete.... The description from the cache page does not sound like a nano....unless he's making an ironic joke with the "not putting it in a baggie."

Is this someting worth contacting a reviewer about?
PhxChem replied to casadelrut's topic in General geocaching topics
Well there you go...... -
The newer ones also say "High Sensitivity" right above the screen. I believe that use a different chip set that can detect weaker signals. Well, that's basically their ad copy anyway... I have the Etrex h......but since I live in AZ, and there aren't that many trees in my area, couldn't tell you if it picks up better in those situations. Although it actually does pick up a signal in my house. Your Etrex should work fine in most situations.
-
Yeah.....nanos might not make the best starting caches....although lamps skirts are usually easy. The skirt is the movable metal cover at the bottom (sometimes also called a dust cover).
-
Did they really leave the cans? Something tells me they would be more motivated to pick up the caches to prove a point than to pick up actual litter....
-
I'm not touching that one....you would probably have to prove intent....or obvious stupidity on the part of the cacher (placing an ammo can next to school property). Any panicky Pete can start a bomb scare.... Hey look it's one of the 35mm canister bombs, call the cops!
-
It should also be noted that sometimes, a container could really could fit in between these categories and different people may put them into different categories. For example, I've seen a regular-sized Altoids tin listed as a "micro" on one page and a "small cache" on some one else's page. Personally, to me, if it can't hold a regular sized pencil, it's probably a micro. But that's my subjective opinion. So...size is sometimes subjective in caching (unless it's explicitly listed in the guidelines).....oh, and sometimes....just wrong!!

Found Geocache that should not be where it was
PhxChem replied to SBeckner80's topic in General geocaching topics
Wasn't Anza Borrego where they kicked out all the caches because of a new land manager. Not sure if that situation ever got resolved. -
So people can go and find "level" 2 and 3's without finding 1's? From what I read, you either play the 1, 2, 3 game, or you don't access to the "higher" caches. Seems like it's a different game. Not the same thing as having access to ALL of the game pieces and DECIDING which ones to find (your examples). If I'm incorrect (and it is possible), why not just find difficulty 1's before 2's and 3's......seems like the game is already there..... If that's all it is and it's voluntary, then that already exists, people can find whatever level of difficulty they want to. It's just like your examples. Probably for the same reason geodashing isn't done on this site....it's a different game. The OP's idea is either 1) already a part of geocaching and can be accomplished voluntarily by anyone who wants to or 2) it is a new game that requires new rules, not to mention new coding, etc. I just don't think people, in general, want another game cluttering up this site. From the recerption I've seen to this idea.....Waymarking anyone?

Guide to getting a vacation spot cache approved
PhxChem replied to Peconic Bay Sailors's topic in General geocaching topics
Yeah, they know where the best lampposts are! I figure if a guy's going to maintain it and look out for it time to time, why not make it his cache? And if your maintainer flakes out? Just some questions.... -
One Star Terrain = Wheelchair Accessible by Default?
PhxChem replied to JeepinOregon's topic in General geocaching topics
The reviewer referred to in the OP doesn't seem to think so. -
So, we could have two different games going on at once with the same game pieces (or at least some of the same pieces)? What's the point of having a rule "if you want to"? Seems you could try this on your own geocaching listing site. Although the idea of having "another level" actually sound like a good addition to the game, it seems that it would have to be the game across the board to be accepted on this site.
