The OP has well over 1,000 over the last 4 years......they know how it works. I guessing that something happened with a cache they wanted approved.
  2. If this turns out to be a lamp post skirt lift.....
  3. You just described 90% of the threads here. Luckily, no one complains about micros anymore........
  4. The two containers that I have "out in the middle of nowhere" are ammo cans...for obvious reasons. However, nothing is perfect. I have come across a leaky ammo can. But that was one out of many.
  5. And here I thought someone was just picking a fight over their favorite geocaching pet peeve. I'm not sure I've seen anyone on the boards use the "Frisbee Test" as an absolute right to place a cache. HHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM....In most cases, I think these differences are self evident. You'll notice that this thread does not include a lot of cachers. I think the OP's tactics to try to educate and shine light on the "situation" have been unimpressive. Just an observation.
  6. Even though ammo boxes around here are cheaper....those look pretty cool. Might be a nice change of pace to find something slightly different. I've also seen a couple of newer ammo boxes at the Army surplus store that are some type of strong plastic.
  7. With the lack of details, how are we to know the legality of the situation??

Listen, they can't tell the future. So let's all just cool down here. No one is going to die because of the website having problems. Seriously, can we put things into perspective?
  9. It's like THE universal goal!! But since it IS a goal for a specific travel item....the coin will obviously be logged properly, will be discovered daily, cachers will always drop it off at the next cache, and it will stay within 5 miles of the owner at all times. Even muggles will sign up for a Groundspeak account just to log it properly! They will then drop it off at the nearest cache (careful to choose one well-hidden) because they will read the tag and figure "it's the right thing to do!!" That's just how it works......
  10. Great, it's a guideline. We all agree (although it's hard to start a fight that way.....).
  11. 1. I wouldn't find it. 2. Tell the owner, attempt to rehide 3. I would say....yes 4. So they're there.....they actually find the cache, but do not sign the log? If it is a picture of the actual container....probably. If actually retrieving the cache is important to the difficulty or point of the cache....hhhhmmm......maybe not. 5. I give up on that one...........
  12. If you look on ebay, there are also 3rd-party cords that connect from the Garmin directly to USB (it comes with a serial-to-USB driver that you install on your computer). Once you do this, there are many applications that you can use to transfer cache coordinates.
  13. That's more of a note to a reviewer........
  14. Anyone else here want to visit Rhode Island? Hello......? Hellooooo.......?
  15. Now who to believe? Guess we'll all have to take a road trip to figure this one out.
  16. Well, are we getting a vote? Or do "many people" have more pull on this site than I? I actually liked it...uncluttered my maps, allowed them to load faster. If it could be an option, that would be nice. I realize change is difficult, but how long was that left into place? Not even a week maybe....... Someone must have thought it was a good idea at some point for it to be implemented originally. Why did it go?
  17. Why was the clustering removed? I actually liked it. Was it a bug, or was it originally supposed to be a new feature?
  18. Unfortunately, it IS near the U.S./Mexico border. Unfortunately, many unsavory things happen (drug smuggling, people smuggling) in many of those areas, even more if they are rural...not a lot of witnesses.
  19. I wouldn't use a corporate slogan as the cornerstone of any argument. Too much implied. I mean every cache (even "bad" ones) have a location.
  20. Well, it's the OP's cache. So....he could probably say. At some point, the "everything is relative" argument falls apart. Who's to say I can't go to some random cache page and log a find? No one, it's "the way I want to play the game." Although I'm pretty sure a majority of cachers would look down on that.
  21. Actually, we were responding to actions that we THOUGHT had happened. Since we don't know you personally, we really weren't insulting you. It turns out that maybe the neighbor gave a delightfully EXAGGERATED story. Maybe she freaks out when people look at her property. I've seen people like that. Then again, maybe the neighbor will come back and say you're making stuff up!!! So, we were reacting to the ACTIONS that allegedly happened. You will notice my caveat in my post: So that my insurance policy. No need to eat anything. Well, I don't want to starve. So, you know.....maybe we can be friends and hangout and not destroy bushes and stuff..... Well, I mean, we assumed that what the neighbor told the OP was true. It turns out that may not be so. So, that changes our opinion. We had incomplete information to work with here. Nothing personal... At the same time, I'm not going to rail at the OP.....especially if the story told here was exactly as the neighbor described. Although the OP DOES know the location better than anyone else. If there is a lack of fencing and signage....then that WOULD be confusing and someone could easily wonder onto private property. Something needs to be clarified on the cache page or in cache location.
  22. That's because geocaches are placed in all sorts of places. If you don't like the looks of an area, or don't feel comfortable, by all means, don't cache there. But crimes also happen near roads. But do we stop driving?
  23. But even if you look at it from another viewpoint, since when is trespassing ok? Because your GPS tells you to? What other POV makes their actions reasonable? There is no possible way to take into account EVERYTHING that stupid people are going to do. If there were, there wouldn't be geocaching. "HHHMMM....maybe I shouldn't put it near a tree, what if someone cuts down tree looking for geocache?" "HHHMMM...maybe I shouldn't put it in a forest, someone might burn down the forest looking for it." Sound ridiculous? Well, what the cachers did was equally ridiculous!! There are ALWAYS caches "near" someones home.....that's where a lot of public parks happen to be. Should I assume that without guidance, every cacher is going to go through some one's living room to get to the cache? That's unreasonable. Could it happen? Sure. To the OP: Don't listen to the cache police...you did nothing wrong. If it is on public property (and not actually on private property)...you followed the rules. You don't have to hold every ones' hand to tell then how to get to your cache. I wouldn't have thought it reasonable to assume that, if not told, cachers would just go right trough back yards to get to caches. Now I know a new level of stupidity to take into account. I think the changes you made are more than adequate. You can't stupid-proof everything. Like I said, if you could, Geocaching wouldn't exist. To those who don't like to cache near peoples' houses....well...then....umm.....don't. It doesn't mean they can't be placed where you don't like them. Some people actually don't mind going to caches near houses. There IS a map on this here website. Look at it!! Caveat: If there is UNFENCED PRIVARE property in the area that may be confused with public property, that IS an issue you would need to deal with. My response assumes that private property is demarcated with fences as to be obvious. If not....... Yeah, like....did you install a mote around you and your neighbors house? Razor wire? A mine field? "Lazers?" Well, obviously you're not doing your due diligence.........
  24. My wife actually has a theme pen cache here in PHX. No problem in the winter. We'll see what happens to these pens in 110+ weather (maybe more INSIDE the cache). Is it discouraged as SWAG? If so, what is the reasoning?
  25. Well, I would say that, on the whole, while geocaching in the USA, that seems to be an irrational fear. Now, if you cache in Ciudad Juarez.......... If you cache in areas known for human smuggling...you never know what you're going to find. Here is an interesting cache here in AZ...near my house. While not finding dead bodies....well, look at some of the pics..... Who knew this was going on down the road? GCRJN9
