  1. Wow, someone outside of class talking about sig figs. Most of our GPS can use multiple formats. I'm guessing that different units give you different number of sig figs for the same format depending on a unit's accuracy. Although I figure they are probably only different (if at a all) by one digit.
  2. It's usually good to get a reading, walk away from the cache, walk back to the cache, get another reading and repeat a couple of times....then average the numbers. Seems to have worked on my caches.
  3. HHMMMMM.....not too sure about this one. But....here we go.....why?
  4. Maybe this person is a bad communicator. The OP seems to have felt that it might be a message. Maybe some is just trying to be subtly annoying. Just saying that out of the 100+ cache I've come across, I do not remember one missing log book. In my area, it's not a problem (it might be elsewhere). And this cacher has multiple logs missing....just saying it sounds suspicious. Replace the logs....and see what happens. Hopefully, nothing except caching.
  5. What percentage of geocachers even come to the boards?? This isn't exactly the nightly news. And of course that assumes that someone is intentionally doing it.....which, based on the data presented here, seems to be the case IMO.
  6. Oh yeah...the publicity (?).....I don't see what's wrong with talking about it here.
  7. So now Lock N Locks look like bombs? I wonder if Wal Mart has daily bomb scares on their food storage aisle.
  8. In most cases, it's when you're the....you know, the first to find it.
  9. I do really love to "cacher"......I think. I'm guessing this will be traveling to the regional boards soon.
  10. Yeah, wouldn't everyone see the ammo box from at least a mile?? Sheesh........
  11. I'm just waiting for the news story (or movie plot line) where someone is using geocaching to cover up a crime or deflect attention from illegal activities. Not to give anyone any ideas.....or anything. Hey maybe THAT topic deserves it's own thread (without a proper search before hand). Just kidding, of course. Geocaching....you look like a crack dealer stealing copper wire!!!
  12. Ummm....you're supposed to keep that on...for OUR protection!! Welcome to the club. Now, be prepared to be distracted!! Now, whenever I drive, I'm constantly looknig for possible cache placements. Oh, there would be a great spot!!
  13. What GPS? This is a phaser....and it's set to stun!!! The only time I've ever met fellow geocacher was during FTF (first-to-find) hunts just minutes after caches are published. In that case it's pretty obvious......or it's just a coincidence that we're all (3 of us) shining flashlights inside random bushes at 11PM. So, we just shook hands and introduced ourselves. We all knew each others' handles from finding each others' caches. Funny, thing, we never stopped looking for the cache...even during introductions!
  14. I used to get weird errors for random caches. Apparently my GPS was expecting something it didn't get. But like I said, only on a cache every once in awhile. Since I started using pocket queries however, I haven't used the send to GPS function as often.
  15. You can actually change the coordinates before you save it when using the mark function. Before you click OK to save it, use the up/down buttons to change to coordinates at the bottom of the screen. Then click OK to save.
  16. I have the Etrex-H......no Geocaching mode. But, you don't need a special geocaching mode to geocache. To input manually, scroll screens until you get to "mark." Select "mark," but manually change coordinates before you hit OK. You'll have to play around with it before you get the hang of it, but once you do, it's really easy. Third party USB cables can be found on Ebay. Garmin only makes a serial cable.
  17. Maybe they accidentally got the Pretty Good Putty?
  18. It seems to be the only "field" that size in the whole neighborhood. Might be a pocket park of some sort. Just a possibility. But, as the rest have said. Live and learn. And don't put anything out there that you're not willing to lose.
  19. That, and waiting for a reply to your email.
  20. They can be. The advice you'll get around here is to be selective to your location (at least the nice ones around here will say that). I mean, technically, you just randomly slap a nano on anything and get it published. But if you put it somewhere people may enjoy going where they've never been, many more people will appreciate that. It always good to find inexpensive containers. Containers can also be made out of lots of things not designed for caching. But don't cheap out....glad lock containers can only take so much.....
  21. I have a couple of caches where a wheelchair could make it to GZ.....someone confined to a wheelchair however, could not retrieve the cache. Wheelchair yes or no?
  22. I have one of those in the wild, too (the small one, they make a larger one, too). People seem to like them, and it keeps the water out. It not a high traffic cache, so, I'll have to wait to see how it hold up over time after repeated use.
