In the last 2-3 months I have tried all of the above, except Topo 8 and Cache Register. Here is what I do to load the unit. I load all found and unfound as well as disabled. If you follow my steps you will get them showing all the proper icons. (To those who ask why, If I want to place a cache I have all of the caches in my GPS to make sure I'm not too close. Plus I like to be reminded of past hunts.) Step 1 You need to tell it what kind of GPSr. Step 2 Choose Delorme then PN-30 Step 3 Now we setup what to send under the Send Waypoints option. Step 4 The symbols as defaulted won't show all details so click Change Symbols. Step 5 Choose Combine Both Step 6 Choose one of the combinations then select the icon from the bottom drop down menu. Repeat until all have been set as you want. You can look at mine in that picture to see the icons that match GC.com's the closest. Once done click Save Step 7 Now change the items I have pointed at in the pic and then name your settings. That way you won't have to do this every time. Now you can plug in your PN-30 and turn it on. Choose Data Exchange on the unit. Choose a cache in GSAK as the center point (unless you have less than 1000 caches). And send the waypoints. It will now look very close to your GC.Com map page. If you have ver2.7 you can follow the instructions posted above to save to the SD card and repeat until your card is filled up.

After reading t4e's post I went looking. I found you had one Puzzle Cache the is a Suduko. On it there is only one log from someone with "over 8000 finds". Here is that log, You came on this board and completely misrepresented the cacher. You led us to believe that you had a problem with the puzzle, fixed the problem, cacher tried puzzle twice, cacher guessed and found it. As we see from the cacher's log they solved puzzle twice, looked wrong to them so they played with the numbers and found a solution that worked in the park the cache was in, cacher went out and was First to Find! So lets give you the benefit of the doubt, some other cachers were trying to figure it out and helped you find the problem with the puzzle and you fixed it before the cacher was FTF. Give them the benifit of the doubt and they were working off a PQ with the unfixed data. And they figured it out anyway. They then posted their experience and mentioned you might have an issue, which you admitted in your post that you did. If you are going to come on a public forum and post complaints about someone get your facts straight. Do not paraphrase their log, quote it word for word. Do not twist things to meet your view. You will lose credibility. After reading the real log that was left on your Suduko Puzzle it completely discredited anything else you said in your post. So I looked at the last 20 logs the "offending" cacher wrote. Among them I found mostly factual comments about their experience, but a couple I found what I call discrete logs, the kind I leave when I don't have much else to say. I found two on yours that appeared to be matching your quote. Here are the two I found Granted these logs weren't glowing with praise, but they were not rude either. They just stated what the cacher did and what they believed. I believe you when you tell us you made sure it was on public land. However, I could take the stand that if you misrepresented these cachers on a public forum you must be misrepresenting that info. Could it be that the cacher in question has a reason to doubt you? Could they read this thread and think about other times they believe you have misrepresented something? I don't personally know you or the other cacher. I have no agenda or believe to know who is right or wrong in these incidents. I am just pointing out how important it is to try to think carefully about what others are really saying, especially before going out in public and making accusations. Try to look at it from their point of view. I'm not saying to automatically agree with them, But try not to paint their actions with malice. Even after thinking about it carefully, multiple times, it is usually best to forget it and move on.

grandpa wants to get startet, witch device?
jeffbouldin replied to beun&vanbengel's topic in GPS technology and devices
For ease of use check the new Magellan eXplorist GC. Early reports indicate it will be one of the easiest to use. The Basemaps are worldwide and supposed to be pretty good. No Topo maps though. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $199 US and it will be shipping on the 15th. -
There is one car unit that can be used as a true outdoor geocaching GPSr. That is the Garmin Nuvi 500. Itis ruggedized and is waterproof. Has Topo and street maps. A local cacher with over 10,000 finds uses it as his only unit. He said the biggest issue he has is that it doesn't have a way to hook up a lanyard and it doesn't fit in the hand like a handheld. But you can route on the streets the switch to geocaching mode a walk the rest of the way. Also it is fully paperless with field notes. You can find them online for 200-250.

Would you claim a container from an archived cache?
jeffbouldin replied to Odie442's topic in General geocaching topics
Look on the page. The original recycled container was replaced. I know. Look on the page, it is mine and I replaced it. But I replaced it with the same container. It is one of those match containers Wal-Mart sells in the camping section. -
Hey! This is the South's forum! What are you Yankee's doing here! Granny, hand me my shotgun!

Problem with Explorist 210
jeffbouldin replied to smallpotatoes's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've had two Explorist and my mother had one. I noticed that if I used the arrow on the map to point at the cache and hit GoTo it would be off more often than not. I alway hit Goto, make sure that it says nearest at the bottom (if not scroll right to change), scroll to Geocaching Points and enter, on Position hit enter, now scroll to the cache you want and hit enter. Now you can follow it to the cache. I never have used the compass screen so I can;t answer that part. I prefer to use the map screen to navigate. -
I have a PN-30 upgraded to 2.7. I use GSAK to load it. In GSAK there is a drop down menu called GPS. I set it to the Delorme PN-30. Then I opened up the Send Waypoints box. At the top I click on Change Symbols, then choose Combine Both and go through the list and make sure that the symbols were what I wanted showing for the cache type. I believe that the main thing was changing the found caches to show Geocache found smiley. Save that and then set the parameters for how you want the file sent to your GPSr. I set mine to send 990 caches (gives me room to send a new cache to the unit for a FTF attempt), put the hint at the end, and send 10 logs. Now choose the button save and put a name to these settings, that way you don't have to go through all of that every time. Now all I have to do is plug in my GPSr and turn it on, Choose a cache at the center of my area I want covered, (I have 14,000 in my database), choose Send Waypoints from the GPS menu, choose the PN-30 settings (that is what I named my settings), and click send. I now have 990 caches with all of the info on my unit. Since I have the 2.7 firmware I can go into the menu of my PN-30 and choose Waypoints. After they load I can go back into the menu, choose File then Save As, Name the file and save it. I can then hook back up to the computer and send another 990 caches and save them to a file on my GPSr. I can repeat this until all of my caches are on the GPSr or I fill up the SD card. Now out in the field I can go back in the GPSr menu, choose Waypoints, go back in the menu choose file, then Open, then the file I want opened and then it loads those 990 caches. Delorme has said that when 2.8 firmware comes out it will make this process easier. I believe they are trying to get it to take the GC.com GPX files directly.

I started with an Explorist 210 and moved up to an Explorist 500. My mother had an Explorist 400. Now that we upgraded to a Delorme PN-30 the kids are using the Explorist. They a very accurate and easy to use units. I would recommend them to any new cacher, if you get a great deal on them. They are discontinued. You can get a decent new unit for $135-$150 and a new all paperless for about $200-$225. So unless you are getting this for less than $100 I would keep looking.

The end of the summer is a very long time away. The recommendation from Groundspeak is that cachers should try to move a trackable along in a couple of weeks. For many people who don't go caching that regularly it may be more realistic to expect a move within 4 weeks. I personally don't start to get worried unless there's been no movement from my trackable for a couple of months... My own feeling would be that it's too early for you to be holding on to the trackables that you'd like to take with you when you leave Japan but it's a good idea to ask the owners what they feel about it as they may be happy for their trackables to be in the "waiting room" for many months. Best wishes with your travels and I hope you'll enjoy your future posting to U.K. MrsB I agree completely with MrsB. I once was planning a trip to Canada and had some coins. I emailed the owners and asked if they wanted me to hold them and take them. One did not want it held that long, two did. So contact the owners and comply with their wishes.

Membership renewal has bankrupted me!
jeffbouldin replied to DENelson83's topic in General geocaching topics
Well then at the very least counseling to help you manage what money you do have, so as to make better decisions as to what to buy and not to buy. Budgeting what money you do make. Scubasonic Sometimes people just find themselves in a bind. No amount of counseling will help that. Sometimes people forget that something they signed up for a year ago is up for renewal and the money just isn't there when it hits. No counseling will help that. I'll bet that many people being judgmental on this topic have been in the same spot at some time in their lives. -
A way to search by difficulty / terrain rating?
jeffbouldin replied to TeamLegit's topic in How do I...?
At the top left of the page click on your name and it will take you to your Your Profile page. Look on the far right column about 2/3 of the way down in the Premium Feature section for Build Pocket Queries. -
When you create your PQ do not check a day of the week to run, leave that blank to start. Then after saving it go back to the list of your PQs. To the left of the name of your PQ there is an icon that when clicked on will let you see the results of that PQ in Google Maps. If it is not what you want go back and edit it then look at it again in Google Maps. After it is what you want then go and select a day of the week to run. This will keep you from wasting daily PQs with ones that aren't correct.

Isn't that illegal in most states? even if it wasn't, in this day and age people are suspicious of strangers knocking on their door offering help might do him more harm than good on that note, i don't mean to impose or tell you what to do, i don't know any of your circumstances but one thing comes to mind, maybe consider getting a second job? No, a young man doing part-time odd jobs in his neighborhood is not illegal, as much as many young men would like for it to be. There ya go. Forget "willing", replace it with "I have a thousand excuses why I can't make any money" and you have today's mindset. Sheesh! It was a joke about widowed women and a young man, not a criticism. -

Yes, it can happen and fast. And with the way banks have been running items through it increases the fees they get. You have 5 items come in and they run the biggest first, if that puts you over the limit they ding you for the other 4 at $30-$50 each. Then they use snail mail to warn you. Giving them another two days to keep dinging you. There is a very good reason Congress is looking to pass legislation regulating these practices. To the original poster, there are many of us who have been where you are and feel your pain. You will not pick up enough cans or brass to get the money in your account by the cutoff time that day. Definitely go to your local branch, do not call. Sit down with the bank rep and respectfully explain the situation and ask for their help. If they see that you are not a habitual offender they will probably work with you. Because of Congress' looking at them many banks are trying hard to look like they are cleaning up their acts. -

I agree with Pax42. That is what I do. There is also a macro called DeLormeTile, this macro divides you database up into the proper sized .gpx to be loaded onto your SD card and switched in the field. The only problem I have with this macro is that it does not keep the found it icon on caches, they all have standard icons. Using the Send Waypoints under the GPS drop down menu. Here is what I have done. 1. GPS Drop Down>Send Waypoints (assuming you have chosen the correct unit under Setup GPS). 2. Click the button Change Symbols. 3. Choose the Combine Both radio button. 4. On the right side choose the type (Tradition+found, Multi+Placed, etc.) 5. On the left side choose the icon for the selected Type. 6. Repeat as needed then save. 7. Now uncheck use defaults. 8. I chose 990 waypoints to send, send 10 logs, and left the rest defaulted. 9. I then chose save next to the settings box and named my settings so I won't have to redo everything. 10. Hook up the GPSr, when it asks on the GPSr screen how to connect chose Data Transfer mode. 11. Now on GSAK click send. 12. Do as Pax42 said and repeat as needed.

How are you loading the field notes? I go into my field notes on Geocaching.com with my preferred browser and upload it through there. In Firefox click on tools and select options. At the top of the box choose Advanced, then choose the General tab. Click the box for Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser and the click on check now. Tell it to be the default. Now start up IE. When a box pops up saying it isn't the default uncheck the box that says to check to see if IE is the default the click No.

PN-60 menu...will the PN-40 be able to get it?
jeffbouldin replied to a topic in GPS technology and devices
Dang! That is my one complaint with the PN-40, I like to have a menu, but the PN 40 just has pages. The great thing with the PN series is you can put only what you want in the page button. When I hit page I scroll through Map, Satalite, Geocache, and Compass. If I want Waypoints or anything else I go into the menu. You can set yours up to display what you want. -
I just ran a test to verify you are correct about the 5 log limit on logs in PQs. I have more logs in mine because I have been updating the same database for the past two years, so I have more than ten logs for older caches.
-
Jeff, How do you set up GSAK to include 10 past logs? I would like to try it and maybe I can get something more than the "TFTC" logs while on the trails. Thanks, Ski I use the Send Waypoints feature under the GPS drop down menu. Before you hit send uncheck use defaults and one of the settings is the logs to send. I also clicked on the change symbols button, choose combine both, and then setup what icon I wanted for what type so it matches the Geocaching Google maps. Feel free to email me if you need other help, I sometimes can respond quicker to that.

GSAK = Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. It is a database program for geocaching. PQ = Pocket Query. That is a feature that you get with the premium membership. You can set it up to send you up to 500 (soon to be 1000) caches in a file. You will get all of the information for each cache that is on the page. Logs, description, Difficulty/Terrian, size, etc. So I have two Premium Memberships. I have set it up so I get 4 PQs (you can get 5 a day) from each one for Mon-Thurs. This gets me every cache in Tennessee. I load all of these into GSAK. I can now use GSAK to manipulate the data. If I want to list all caches in the database hidden by you I could search for that. If I wanted to find a cache in the database with a D/T combo of 4.5/3 I can search for that. I can have multiple databases. We have a Challenge Cache to find all of the remaining Virtuals in TN, I have a database of just those virtuals so I can track what I need. I can pick a cache near my work and tell it to send 1000 caches surrounding it to my GPSr. I can then pick one close to home and do the same. When I go to Memphis I can use Google Earth to create a .KML file of my route, load that into GSAK and tell it to send 1000 caches along that route to my GPSr. I have a Delorme PN-30 and the kids have Magellan Explorist, I can use GSAK to load both, don't have to use multiple programs. I can load Cacheberry on my Blackberry from GSAK, or a Palm, Windows Mobile, etc. These examples only scratch the surface of what GSAK can do. Check out www.GSAK.net and check out their forums for more details.
