I've never used Magellan Geocache Manager however I have had no issues with my Explorist 500 and either Vista or Win7. I have used Mapsend Lite but I do almost all of my work in GSAK. I load about 12,000 caches into it and have written a Macro to convert that into .gs files with 200 caches each. This covers the whole state of Tennessee. I then plug my GPSr into the computer and it loads just like a jump drive. I open the Geocaches folder and drag and drop the 82 files into it.

Removing a cache out of the archives
jeffbouldin replied to aharmon_5's topic in South and Southeast
What the original CO is telling you to do is use his containers and submit it as a brand new cache. Get the coords for each stage and fill out this form. http://www.geocaching.com/hide/report.aspx The posted coords would be stage one. Once you've filled out the form and submitted it you will have to go back in and add the coords to the final and any stages between if there is more than two. Make sure that you choose the option that says only you and the reviewer can see them. If you want to you can mention in your write up that it is a redo of a previous cache. -

You might want to try a local club. I found these two. http://www.ncmageocachers.com/ http://www.ncgeocachers.org/index.php -
Removing a cache out of the archives
jeffbouldin replied to aharmon_5's topic in South and Southeast
If it is archived then the original cache owner would have to contact the local reviewer and ask him/her to unarchive it. Then if the owner wants to do so he/she can then adopt it out to you. Until the original cache owner takes these steps there is nothing you can do. -
Sorry, wrong topic.

But the mice are already in charge. 42. -
That would be the very upper end of what I would consider. I have seen people post new Garmin Etrax H units for not much more. Make sure whatever Garmin Etrax you get has the H in its modal and comes with the cable to connect to the computer. If the 210 is new in the box and you cannot do any more money than that, you could do worse. Just keep in mind it is a discontinued product. Here is one for $80 on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Magellan-eXplorist-210...=item2a03c3956d That was the only realistic Buy It Now. There were several others on there for auction. If you look at them search Explorist. You only want 210, 400, 500, 600, or XL. Feel free to email me through my profile if you have questions about any of them.

I've had the 210 and now the 500. My mother has the 400. They are great units. Easy to use and very accurate. The 100 does not connect to the computer, you would have to hand load every cache. The 210 will connect. With a premium membership, some provided (or if not it can be downloaded from Magellan) software, and the USB cable you can put multiple files with 200 caches in each directly on the unit. That ringing endorsement aside it would depend on the price. They are discontinued units. I personally wouldn't go more then about $75-90US for the 210. What are they asking?

First rule of geocaching! It is always the GPSrs fault! Seriously it usually isn't, however in your case it probably has a hand. Car GPSrs are made to get you from point A to point B by routing you across the best roads. Hand held GPSrs get you from point A to point B in a straight line. Now the Nuvi can be put in a mode to simulate that. On my 205w Tools/Settings/System/Usage Mode/Pedestrian Tools/Settings/Navigation/Route Preference/Off Road These might help. Also someone posted that on the W modal the was a satellite screen that could be used, but I haven't found it. In any case once you get 20-50 feet quit looking at the screen and start hunting.

magellan explorist 100
jeffbouldin replied to KrazyRaider051685's topic in GPS technology and devices
My first GPSr was a 210, my mother has the 400, and now I use the 500. I have never lost signal. Not even in an extremely tight canyon with very dense old wood tree cover (my buddy turned his Garmin off 1/3 of the way in). There is nothing wrong with the chipset in the Explorist line. That being said, I agree with you about it being the main unit since you cannot download to it. If I ran accross one for $25 bucks it would be a great back up. But defiantly not the main. I do recommend someone on a budget to get an Explorist 210, 400, 500 if you can get it under $100. Over that you can get new units with a warranty. -
They actually can get published, with special circumstances. It cannot be commercial in nature, meaning no for profit stores. I have one at a local historical home. Since it is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to showcase a piece of civil war history and because it was they only way the Director would allow it(did not want people poking and prodding in everything) it was allowed. That one is a multi requiring you to read info signs to figure out the coords. There is a traditional at the information station of a local park. Again neither are for profit businesses. So if you can find a location like that you might have a chance.

One in every geographical part of the State. Memphis=Geocachers of West Tennessee Jackson=Jackson Area Geocachers Nashville=Middle Tennessee Geocachers Club Chattanooga=Greater Eastern Tennessee Geocachers Club and Geocachers of Southeast Tennessee Knoxville=Greater Smokey Mountains Geocachers Club Tri-Cities Area=www.tricitiesgeocachers.org However many from each club get together with the other clubs, attend each others events, and post on each others boards.

Middle Tennessee Geocachers Club is a little far but the Greater Eastern Tennessee Geocachers Club (www.getgc.org) have several members on the NE side of Chattanooga. If Knoxville is closer there is the Greater Smokey Mountains Geocachers Club (www.gsmgc.net). If you are in the middle check them both out.

Can you get a product called Gorilla Glue? I know I've seen it in either Home Depot or Lowes or both. It forms an unbreakable bond.

That is because he was already into caching! http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=cd...72-1b8accf42477

Tells me that I can't view archived log entries. You can archive a log entry? Most curious. Perhaps someone can remember better, but I swear the log was by "BillyBobNosePicker." In his bio section on his profile, it explained he was "William Robert" and he wanted to be a cosmetic surgeon, thus "NosePicker." He had found several caches, including the cache in question. The account was started this spring, and he had obviously been on to log this cache. My first reaction was "Sock Puppet, with some fake finds to make it look legit." Now, according to the profile page, he's: Been a member since '07 Not actually a validated member Last visited this spring. Actually has a sincere sounding bio section, nothing about dreams of being a plastic surgeon/nose picker. Did I remember the name wrong, or was there some editing from on high done after false logs were made with the account? You are completely correct, I looked at it also when it was first logged. Very strange. -
Cachemate or (unauthorized software removed) would work for you.

WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System. There are some static reference stations that upload a code to two of the GPS satellites, the idea is that if your GPSr can recieve the WAAS code from one of these two satalites it can use it to further correct for errors. Theoretically making your GPSr more accurate. A couple of years ago the FAA switched which two satellites they used to broadcast the code. For a couple of weeks they broadcast the update so that GPSrs that were active at that time would know the new satellites. If you didn't use you unit during that time it would still be looking for the wrong satellites. If your GPSr had gotten the new code but you had to default it you lost the code. About this time Magellan phased out the Explorist line for the Triton. The company that owned them at the time was horrible to their customers (as you know). They released a firmware update for Europe that included the new WAAS satellites but ignored NA, Europe doesn't use the WAAS system! Sometime last year or the beginning of this year that company sold off Magellan. The new company may be trying to repair some of the damage, they went back and fixed the firmware on the Explorist line. Now that you have a bit of history. I had a 210 and now a 500. Loved them both. Would not give either up for a Garmin Etrax or Ventura, not even the H series. (Now the Delorme PN-40 has my attention and I would consider a Oregon or Colorado.) I used both units back when they did not receive WAAS. I was one of the few that had a firmware in my 500 that would accept the European update and got WAAS back long before Magellan fixed the NA firmware. I have not seen any improvement in my caching ability. The GPSr has a lower estimated accuracy often more than it did in the past, but I still usually see 20-30 feet average with it dropping to 7-10 if I'm in a clearing on a sunny day. That is not much different than before WAAS. However I have noticed with WAAS turned on before it sees and locks on to a WAAS satellite the unit is very inaccurate.

I'd have to add that after reaching that goal and being given mine (which is the final of one of my Giving Back series, GC1KE6R Giving Back #13 Sam Davis' Home) I appreciate seeing others in our area reaching that milestone. We have 3 or 4 to give out, two of them this next month and the other two we have to nail down a date.

What got you into this crazy sport/hobby/obession?
jeffbouldin replied to mc3cats's topic in General geocaching topics
In November of 2007 I was doing a google search on benchmarks. One of the links was to the benchmarks section of gc.com. I signed up on Nov 23rd, got my year end bonus in December and ordered a used Explorist 210 and found my first on December 20th. It was an ammo can in the woods behind a rest area. Took me a good 20-25 minutes since I had no idea what I was doing. Got home and took my oldest daughter out to find a re-purposed flashlight hanging in a tree.
