  1. I have a sling pack and love it. The only time mine slides to the front is when I bend down searching for that elusive ground level cache. Do try them on to see if you prefer the right or left hand type. Otherwise you could be opening it upside down! I prefer it to shrugging in and out of my backpack. As far as the GPS goes...mine is on a lanyard around my neck, and slid into a pocket at GZ. It really is a matter of personal taste.....
  2. My first (and only solo) hide started life as a Lock and Lock, complete with GC label, stash note and trade items. It got buried by grass and other junk to a great degree, so a micro took its place. Then along came the fence guys and bye-bye access to that micro. Temporarily replaced with a Hide-a-Key and is now a waterproof container. Currently disabled as the rest stop with a great view where it is located is closed until completion of road work. I would like to hide more, but always second-guess myself...and get beaten to the spot I have in mind! Serves me right, I should stop procrastinating!!
  3. I also updated to iOS 8 yesterday, but haven't tried uploading a pic to a cache log/page. I'll try later to upload one to the cache I own and report back...
  4. Only gone after one cache using my phone (Nokia Windows Phone) and got the cache. Have to say I was concerned about dropping the phone - and have to check the accuracy of the phone versus the GPS - but it seems fine for on the fly caching....in dry weather!
  5. Have you tried logging out of Geocaching, then back in again? I actually had to restart my old computer for the communicator to "take."
  6. Although neither of us have brought ticks home from caching, the cats have brought them in from cat run. Little blighters probably drop from the deer that pass through, and the best device I have found is Tick Twister which I get from my local vet. The company themselves gave me a list of suppliers in my area. Works great!
  7. Any of me falling down - which I do frequently, silently and usually end up in an awkward position! Luckily, no severe injuries...except to my pride.
  8. Lovely pic you found there! Yep, TBs go missing, and only very occasionally do they seem to resurface. I always miss out on deals and add-ons...just a fact of life for me. Enjoy your new unit, larkspeed and welcome to geocaching and the forums.
  9. Just missed being FTF on one occasion, although we weren't trying for it. However, at GZ, we found two containers, both brand new, both with fresh log sheets. Obviously, two cachers had the same idea of placement at what was a super view. Signed both logs to cover our butts. Saw the other cachers returning to their car as we were leaving ours.
  10. A cache was hidden in a hinged log, and as I picked it up, it fell apart. Although the elements were really the cause, I felt at fault and contacted the CO, offering to pay. No need they said as they were aware it was on its last legs, and just my bad luck to be the cacher it happened to. They had a replacement ready to go, luckily. These things happen, just hope the CO in the OP's case didn't spend a lot of money on this particular container.
  11. Glad it was something so simple! Happy Caching from another cat lover.
  12. When I had a Magellan, I had to log out of the geocaching website and back in again. Didn't work, so I restarted the computer and that did it. When you send to GPS, do you get a pop-up window? Be sure to select Magellan (I didn't at first) from the choices available. Also, in your profile (and I don't know if this matters) do you have your Magellan entered as your primary device? I have to admit that I did have issues later on with my Magellan and loading caches and now have a Garmin.
  13. I have the official Geocaching app for my iPad mini, and recently joined the smartphone set, albeit with a Windows phone. I have Geocaching Live (free) on that, and it had better be an official app, or it gets deleted!
  14. Some of the links in this thread may help you out.
  15. The app is an additional $10, but you could get that and try premium for three months for another $10 if you wished. I started with just the basic membership for a couple of years, and if I had a smartphone, I would go with the app first. Bear in mind that the app isn't transferable to another platform such as Android. I would do a bit more research, and see how many caches you can download in a 24 hour period first. There may or may not be limits. I seem to recall that the trial (free) app allows only 3 in that amount of time. In a nutshell, and being thrifty, I'd go with the app first and go for premium if I stayed with the game as there are a lot of benefits. I have the app on my iPad mini, it has no GPS, but I managed to navigate to a cache with it as a trial, leaving my GPS back at the motel. It shows nearby caches, and you can select an area too. I seem to remember saving the cache offline??? Just be careful of data charges on your iPhone! All the best, and welcome to the forums.
  16. Not sure if this is still the case, but you may get a free month of premium membership with the 62s. You can also do 3 months for $10, I believe.
  17. The few FTFs I've had were more down to luck than racing to grab them. Made it a bit sweeter. No rushing to be the first at the scene, although the gathering of cachers those times we did try was great and meant more to me than the cache! That's why I like the game....so many ways to enjoy it for each of us.
  18. You can also look for any events in your area, where you will meet other geocachers socially. Check these forums in the Regional Group section, Facebook, or try Googling. Whichever method you try, I hope it pans out. Welcome! edit to add: Here's a link for you Ontario Geocaching Association - there's a forum to be had where you can ask some questions. You will have to sign up, I believe.
  19. I am not tech savvy, but I really like my Garmin 62s. Takes a little while to get used to, but I was doing OK by our third outing with it. My Magellan GC was OK, but not as accurate and the screen was too small for me. Also upgraded because the Mag quit. One hint - whichever Garmin you go for, Internet Explorer doesn't seem to get along with it. Try Firefox or Chrome. If you have any more questions after you've bought your unit, just ask away. Lots of folk will be glad to lend a hand. Me too, if I can []
  20. Wow! Great photos everyone - thoroughly enjoy this thread, that's for sure.
  21. Before I had even heard of geocaching, we had a number of vehicles park outside of our house, many for quite a while with the occupants still inside. We are in a rural location, and there had been a spate of burglaries down our little dead end road. We were obviously very suspicious, and I was about to ask the last couple if I could help, but they drove away. Found out that there was a cache close by and have met many cachers since - have to love the travel bugs on vehicles. If that last couple hadn't driven away, we may have started caching sooner!
  22. We have found those in a few, and it is something we remove...especially in a wet cache! While I appreciate the handiness of this for someone, I am sure parents don't want to explain their use before they are ready to do so.
  23. What if it were a magnetic strip cache, identified by GC#, but missing a log sheet or interior? Just a thought. Was it placed that way? No way of really knowing.......a conundrum, for sure. As far as being in too much of a hurry to open the container and sign - no excuse. Make time.
  24. 62s - I love it, because even though I am a technophobe, I can operate it! No experience with the Etrex, so can't comment there. Good Luck!
  25. 10,623 - whatever the number, have a great time!
