  1. We have been caching almost 8 years, and still have problems finding some caches. They are usually the ones that other folk say were easy, quick, etc. What I like best about caching is the journey, the trips (I mean that literally and figuratively!) and having a purpose to a walk. I have been to places in my own area that I didn't know existed, met some neat people and got exercise. One hint is to try thinking like a hider - where would YOU hide it - which sometimes helps. Please don't give up too soon, if you have questions, we will all try to help!
  2. Have you placed the cache hide and completed the online submission form, including the coordinates of where your hide is? If you have, your GC code is generated then.......but the cache has to be approved by a reviewer before other cachers can go looking for it. What sort of device do you plan on using to get those coordinates, by the way? Please find some caches first, before you try hiding one. We cache on Christmas and New Year's Day, whatever the weather, so don't let a little rain stop you!
  3. Another vote for Garmin - I have the 62s...and love it! If I can use it, anyone can.
  4. We are on Vancouver Island, and lately our cell company (Rogers) has been advertizing roaming in the USA for $5 a day. Not sure if your company has something comparable for use in Canada - might be worth checking. I also read somewhere about something called MiFi, personal WiFi....at a price, I'm sure. Enjoy your trip caching in Canada.
  5. We log online at home with separate accounts, although we mostly cache together.
  6. Have fun searching with the boys, and don't forget to let them "find" some caches before you do An ice cream bribe can work wonders too.....
  7. Definitely find quite a few different types of cache first. This can help a lot, believe me! Make sure the cache you hide will be easy for you to get to to maintain. As others have said, read the "Hiding Your First Geocache" more than once. BTW, what will you be using to get coordinates for your hide? GPS or smartphone?
  8. I like my sling pack - bigger than a fanny pack, but smaller than a back pack. Try them on to see if you prefer right or left. Unlike a backpack, you don't have to take it off to get at the contents, just slide it to your front.
  9. If I can't sign the log, for whatever reason, I log a DNF or note. No signy, no smiley for me...even if I can see the cache.
  10. That would a nice addition...sometimes I can't recall the name of the caches we've DNFd and want to attempt again. I could look in my stats, but noted on the map would be easier...
  11. Welcome to the fun and the forums! When you rehide your cache, read the "hiding your first geocache" guidelines - 2 or 3 times - first. When I reread something, I always find something I have missed...usually the most important thing. Always worth a reread with each new hide, as the guidelines can change. Your determination to find out what that hidden container was is great. Ask any questions you want here - there are a lot of friendly and knowledgeable folk willing to help.
  12. Guess which geocacher belongs to which job/hobby. The hint for me was Tooth Fairy - easy for my caching friends who have also been patients!
  13. I had a peek at your profile - if you do change your user name, or set up a new account, I would suggest you NOT have an email address in your profile. Use the "Send Message" feature instead. That will help with anonymity, I hope. Good Luck.
  14. If is a Lock and Lock, and muggles approach, pretend you are chewing a snack as you mumble a greeting. Works best with a cammoed L&L (contents not visible,) and I've mumbled well enough to dissuade muggles from joining me where I am sitting.
  15. Too much like hard work to me. I would just log an attended for the event, and that I found X out of Y temporary caches on the event page. Different strokes for different folks and all that.........
  16. We become more active in the fall/winter after summer days at the beach/lakes. In fact, it has become tradition for us to cache on Christmas and New Year's Days. We are in the Pacific Northwest (Victoria, BC) so if there is any precipitation, it is usually rain. In winter of 1996 though, it was a very different story.....................
  17. We have many DNFs, usually down to over thinking the issue. One cache that was almost a DNF had us circling a marked area about 6 feet around. Eventually, back to the car for a hot drink and a rethink of the clue. "Within 6 feet of the marking tape......" I put my hot chocolate down, rushed back, and there was the cache - attached to the tape! Summer is over, no more sitting by the lake reading...back to more caches and DNFs.
  18. We tried the dash to be FTF on a cache a few times, most of ours happened just because we happened to be passing an out of the way spot a couple of days after publication. The best part of the FTF race for me was the mini event at the cache site. Not bothered by the FTF thing now, much less stressful- no fast driving....and when we find a cache it doesn't matter if we are 1st or 31st.
  19. Welcome! TFTC = Thanks for the cache. TFTH = Thanks for the hide. TNLNSL = Took nothing, left nothing, signed log. QEF = Quick easy find. There are others, check out the link above.
  20. Try Landsharkz - if they don't ship to Europe, they may know someone who can help, or will point you in the right direction. Good Luck!
  21. I think it is a good idea, especially as they can have a free PM! One of our local cachers is ex-RCMP, and it wouldn't surprise me if there are more LEOs caching.
  22. I don't use the ignore list - I know what I won't be seeking....
  23. This is a GREAT cache! We met a female security officer going off duty just after we signed the log, and she thought geocaching sounded like great fun. Good cache to seek in the spring, in between the Snowbirds' morning and afternoon airshow practice sessions!
  24. I would *think* legal hole, as you didn't have to dig it. I would want to be sure that the boulder doesn't want to roll back crushing the cache, or worse, someone's fingers.
  25. That is so true. We all started somewhere! Like you, I am vertically challenged so those high up caches are reached by my caching partner....
