  1. Google may give you a pretty long list....but if the GC# is GCXXXX, it may be one of the earlier caches that was placed/listed. I love a mystery...can you post the numbers you have?
  2. Glad it is sorted - I was going to suggest logging right out of Groundspeak/Geocaching then logging back in. That is what I had to do to get it to "take."
  3. We have quite a few finds, and it is amazing how the easy ones elude us. Sometimes we - and other cachers, I"m sure - overthink the issue. Be sure to read all the logs, and even putting this nemesis cache on your watchlist will get you an email of any new logs...look for subtle hints in the logs. We were actually able to find a couple of caches we had DNF'd before when we were in town today. Second attempt on one, at least the third attempt on another. The latter was hanging from a chain link fence, in plain view. It was extremely small, the skinniest nano I have ever seen. Next time you are at an ATM cache, show the camera your GPS! I agree, I would feel a bit awkward in that situation too. Go and get those other caches in the city, and if the hider of the strip mall cache has more hides, you may be looking for something similar at the strip mall................. I love watching Parkour.....and am amazed at the athleticism of the participants. Good for him!
  4. Love your idea of finding it first, then taking your son back. As a Dad, I am sure you are aware that a younger person's attention span is a lot shorter than an adult's. Go with the warmer/colder hints for your 8 year old, and on another hunt, if you spy the cache first...keep quiet and let him "find" it before you. We couldn't find a micro in a tree, left the search and ran into another cacher with his 5 year old daughter in the park's parking lot. Back we all went, and in no time this little voice says "I can see it, right there!" She was so proud, her Dad got the cache, and she "signed" it first. Look for regular size caches - small, medium or large - and ones marked for beginners. Good Luck, and welcome aboard!
  5. ^^^This^^^ You could probably do that a lot quicker than fiddling about trying to upload it from your GPS. I have a Garmin 62s, and log my finds online at home. Works fine for me, anyway! Try the different methods, and see which you prefer.
  6. Sometimes it is the numbers and sometimes it gives more fun to a walk. There was a series around a lake we did a while back, about 8km, and the caches made the walk even more enjoyable. In fact, we may not have seen this place if it wasn't for the caches...which weren't every 161m apart. The blessing with this hobby/sport is that we can choose which caches to go for.
  7. Events are fun, social events where you can meet fellow cachers, and get tips face to face. Don't be shy, we all started as newbies ourselves. Feel free to ask any questions you have here - except for help in solving puzzles - and we will gladly help. Welcome to caching and the forums!
  8. Pros for the phone....you already have it. Cons - battery life much shorter, not waterproof, sad if you drop it! GPS - rugged, waterproof, better battery life, no data being used, accuracy seems much better. I went with the Magellan GC to start with, but am much happier with my Garmin 62s. There is a learning curve, a bit steep, but if I can do it, anyone can. Good luck with your decision, and welcome to the fun.
  9. Congratulations on your first hide - I see it has been found! Sound like an interesting area, with few caches.....I bet you place one or two more. It has been many years since I visited Scotland and I loved the scenery and the people.
  10. We found a few caches last Tuesday that were very wet - one even had 3" of water in the container, and the bag containing the log had at least an inch. Still able to sign using the Papermate InkJoy Gel Pen. Pack of 10 $4.99 at our corner store..cheaper elsewhere, I'm positive. I did wring the log out a bit, that's for sure! Also posted a Needs Maintenance. Have to love the pens I mentioned for this situation, and adore the price and colours. I find it much quicker to sign the log than faff around with anything else....I am a simple soul, I guess!
  11. Same goes for your GPS - and let your geosenses kick in. Think "where would I hide it?" and look for trodden down areas. We are laughing today about yesterday, my having an empty tummy didn't help - that's my excuse!
  12. It worked fine for me on my desktop (Windows) but not for the other half on a Mac laptop - they couldn't sign in! That issue seems to have been solved now.
  13. Had a caching day from heck today. We found one, just one, of the five we attempted. Only been caching 8 years with more than 1500 finds - it happens. But I am grumpy because of it!!! Oh well, we\ll see how the next outing goes...
  14. I think one can be honest, but nice at the same time. I always try and read my post before submitting it, to see if the way I have said something may cause upset. Same with online logs for caches. I try my best - not saying I always make it, but contrary to opinion, I am human.
  15. Happy Birthday! What a neat idea your girls had for you with the cake - and they had the talent to make it, too.
  16. Depends on the type of caching planned. Grab and go's get my small purse with a couple of pens, change purse and phone. My caching jacket holds a few other pens, tweezers and a few trinkets. For slightly longer treks, I have a sling bag which can be slid from back to front. Should I venture out for longer...then it would be the backpack, IF I can behave myself and not stuff too much in it!
  17. See my avatar to the left...caching on Salt Spring Island a few years back.
  18. We've had the bomb squad called for cammoed pill bottles here......small pill bottles at that!
  19. Even with a baggie, the log gets wet - mine did. Waterproof match containers are much better.
  20. Used to trade, then we decided to just leave a few items if it was a cache likely to get visited by kids. I am happy to have a cache to find and a log to sign.....
  21. I am sure you have already done this, but hope you have the Garmin Communicator downloaded. It is free!
  22. If I don't sign the physical (paper) log, I do not claim the find online. Doesn't take me long....
  23. We always cache on Christmas and and New Years' Days, whatever the weather now. As it gets warmer, we do less caching and Popoki Nui swims and kayaks in the lake while I guard our stuff on the beach with a book in hand. We have cached on very hot days, but don't enjoy it so much now.....
  24. Happy New Year to you everyone, too!
