  1. Are you still having problems? Please let me know. One of the issues early on was that the site would send out a confirmation e-mail during registration. This confirmation mail needed to be responded to within a short period of time, or you wouldn't be confirmed. Let me know if you're still having problems TheNomad
  2. For me, a cache marathon is like 20 caches in one day. Not nearly like the pros. Last night, I found ten caches, and logged as I went. As long as there is sufficient distance between the caches, I can log right after I find. Nothing like driving down the street, Blackberry in one hand logging while watching the GPSr mounted on the dash...
  3. Let me just say that the Florida approver (Crow T. Robot) has been more than fair on approvals with me. On one cache, I hid it too close to RR tracks - he was polite, and explained the rules and the reasons for those rules. Of course, I fixed that up. On another cache, I placed it within a park that required park management approval (which I subsequently received). He politely asked me whether I received the appropriate permission. In all, he's been fantastic. And when I screwup, he's been more than fair. Additionally, if there are extenuating circumstances, he's more than willing to listen. For example, one of our local cachers hid a cache that was only 180' from one of mine. But, the Little Econ River was between the two caches. He initially balked at the close proximity, but when presented with additional information, he considered it, and made the right decision. In all, I find our approver to be level-headed and not at all capricious. That's my $0.02.
  4. Well, I saw this get bumped up by Team 360, and I thought I'd add my kindling to the fire. Of my 784 finds, I've found only 16 virtuals (about 2%). I've tried virtuals in California, Florida, Minnesota and Georgia. In most cases, I found them disappointing, and decided to not pursue them anymore. I'm willing to try some more in other states, just to see what they're like, and see if they take me to someplace interesting in another state. But for the most part, it's really not something that I care to pursue any longer. The neat thing is - I get to exercise my will on the whole thing. It's like the argument about television programming or radio shows. I have the ultimate power to decide whether I want to watch a channel or listen to a show or do a virtual. I'd be disappointed if virtuals disappeared just as much as I'd be disappointed if locationless caches went away completely. And I would also be upset if Howard Stern went away, or if Barney the Dinosaur went away. Well, maybe not Barney, but definately Howard... Virtuals are like "Bubba the Love Sponge" - you either like 'em, or dislike 'em. In either case, you get the choice of whether to consume or not.
  5. When I'm traveling, I love to do log-only micros. a- It gets me out of the hotel room b- It takes me to a part of a city I'd never visit for any other reason c- If I have a car, it gives me a reason to stop and stretch I'd no sooner abandon log-only caches than give up my GPSr. Do I love ammobox caches? Yes of course. Do I love puzzles and all those other types of caches? Yes of course. But when staying downtown in a strange city, there is something magical about walking eight city blocks to get to a small inner-city park with a film canister hidden in the crook of a tree. There is something special about leaving work, and snatching a hide-a-key on the way to the hotel. I love 'em. As they say - "In this game (as in life), there is something for everyone." If you don't care for 'em, don't do 'em. That's my 2/100 of a dollar.

  7. Suffice it to say that I don't care for the smurfy DNF either.
  8. Well, I have a crummy one, and I'd love to see a really nice one available from the Groundspeak store. You can add my moniker to the list of folks that one buy one - if they are of nice quality.
  9. Yeah - it certainly can be read two different ways. Sorry I wasn't clearer in my request.
  10. I sure do. Unless I'm on a marathon. But yesterday, I covered about 3 miles picking up four caches on foot. After finding the cache, I logged the cache on the Blackberry while I was moving onto the next cache.
  11. Thanks - I do those things too when I am comfortably nestled at my computer running PQ's and receiving them via e-mail. That really doesn't address my issue when I'm out in the field, trying to get an answer.
  12. Perhaps you didn't see the "But Not Wap" in the title of the topic. I don't use WAP sites from my Blackberry because I have a full-featured browser. I'm bringing up maps, I can bring up any GC.COM page in full color with all the pictures. So, I don't want to use WAP at all - for anything. The problems I am having are when presented with lists and such from the GC.COM searches or from a PQ that presents multiple pages. I can't page through the results with the blackberry because it doesn't support javascript.
  13. Hey there, Let me preface this by saying that I sincerely appreciate this site, and all the hard work that's put into it. And No, there's no BUT coming. I'd like to ask for/request a non-javascript approach at some point in the future though. The Blackberry (and I believe the Hip-top as well) don't support javascript. The Problem ======== Right now, the .net framework makes long lists semi-easy by using postback (via javascript functions) to do paging. Well, when I'm out in the field searching for things on my Blackberry, I'm unable to view more than one page of information. This is because the Next, and the individual page numbers rely on a javascript javascript function for paging through these lists. The Solution ======== Being able to submit the parameters in a GET, and specify the page number would be huge. I'm not afraid of constructing a lengthy URL in the field if it were only possible. I'd like to be able to do a search (that results in several pages), and modigy the current URL to include something like "&__pg=3" at the end of the URL. True - I wouldn't have the viewstate immediately available, but if I could just get at this stuff using a pure URL, it would make things possible for doing paperless caching live. Something like posting a URL that looks like this: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...32708&__navpg=3 Thanks again for the great site - I'm assuming that this is the correct forum to submit requests for enhancements to the site. I've I've inadvertently posted this to the wrong place, please refrain from the flames, and instead just point me in the right direction. Thanks
  14. I was recently trying to construct a compound search - one that allowed me to specify multiple fields in the search form, and have them adhered to. I found that the search handler is more modal than I expected. For example, I wanted to search for: Caches in the state of Florida that had a title called "Road to Nowhere" This is simply not possible. I tried hacking the url (key=Road+to+Nowhere&submit4=Find&state_id=10) but the key was ignored in favor of listing all caches in the state of Florida. For the most part, it appears that the search is modal - if state_id is provided, then ignore all other parameters, and list all caches within the state. But - there are times when you want to specify multiple criteria for a search. PQ's on this score don't help at all because you can't do a keyword search within a PQ. I'm not sure that solving the problems at the PQ server level is a good solution, but I'm sure that I could go either way about it. I'd rather not go through all the steps of building a PQ only to get a quick answer.
  15. May I suggest that the 'My Cache Page' wording for PQ's be changed from: "Run Pocket Queries" to "Run/Create Pocket Queries" Thanks
  16. I've found spammotel.com to be a great site for doing this. First, it's free. Secondly, if you start getting spam, you can delete the address and forget about it. All of the online purchases I make are done with spammotel.com e-mail addresses. And, they simply forward the e-mail to me with the little note I specified in the message. Quite simple, free, and effective. That's my $0.02.
  17. Could I suggest using waterproof paper? I've used it very successfully on some of my micros that aren't waterproof. It works great: National Geographic Adventure Paper
  18. - Got it now - it's not on the "caches I own" page, it's on my main My Cache Page. Duh! Thanks - This thread is now closed.
  19. I found a mention of this problem in the original announcement of the new My Caches page, but I never saw a clarification or anything. I created a new cache, and it's been submitted for approval. The old my caches page would list the approved and the unapproved caches. The new my caches page only lists the approved caches. There is a problem with this scheme in that if you do not make note of the cache's GC code when you report it, there is no easy way to get back to the cache without going through hoops. I'd like to request that unapproved caches be listed on the my caches page in red (or with the word "Unapproved" beside it). That way, you can get back to the cache and make revisions or clarifications easily. Thanks!
  20. I personally like paintfiction's approach: Paint's anti-micro campaign - WIP Paint's anti-micro campaign - Bend Over And many others. I like it for several reasons: He's raising awareness of micro -vs- traditional cache hiding He's being positive He's issuing a challenge to other cachers to follow suit And it's working. Just do a search for anti-micro: Search for Anti-Micro caches Notice that another cacher has made a contribution to the cause. I'm personally designing an ammocan hide that will be a contribution to the effort. Anyway, that's my $0.02.
  21. I bought some sig pencils (golf pencil size) with "The Nomad Was Here" printed on them. I also got some pencils that say "The Nomad" on one line and "Cache pencil - do not remove" on the line below. Very cool, and they have the side-benefit of being useful.
  22. Crow T. Robot (a sock-puppet admin account) does our approvals around the Orlando area. He's always been very responsive. I've had caches approved within an hour or so. Sometimes, when GC.COM was experiencing some serious growth issues, I've waited until the wee hours of the night before he'd consider doing approvals. And, when things are not quite kosher, he's most professional and helpful. Considering what I've read about others' experiences, I couldn't be happier. Thanks Crow (if you're reading)!
  23. Ok - Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to use a combination of Mapsource and the Florida DOT rest stop list to create the list I wanted. Thanks!
  24. I searched the forums for "Rest Stop" database, "Rest Stop" list, etc. I didn't find any hits - so, excuse me if this has been a topic before. Anyway - I'm wondering if there is a source out there for the latitude/longitude of rest stops throughout the US. Or, even just the state of Florida. Has anyone else create a database of rest stops and their lat/longs? Ideally, I'd like to make a rest-stop cache list without relying on manual data entry.
  25. A high percentage of my caches have been found at night. Sometimes, a bunch of my local friends and I go on a night-caching run where we take down about 15 or so. Most often though, like last night, I go alone. I really enjoy the additional dimension. It's also a requirement for me when I travel on business. I'll usually work from 7am-6pm. Then, the evening is mine. And I'll typically cache until around midnight or so before heading back to the hotel. I night-cache with a 3-cell maglight, and a mini-mag.
