  1. I wonder why my Legend HCx trip odometer displays a different distance to its active log as viewed in MapSource? Is this a shortcoming of the device because walking speeds below two miles an hour are not recognised as moving time? My wife was somewhat disappointed yesterday when I told her we had walked five-and-a-half miles according to the trip odometer. In truth, I believed it to be longer. Sure enough, when I transferred the active log to MapSource, the walk totalled seven miles.
  2. I have just loaded a .csv file of walk start points into my Legend HCx using POI Loader. On this occasion no date appears against the loaded poi.gpi file that is created, although dates are present for other points of interest files that I loaded at previous times and renamed. I wonder what dictates the presence or not of the date?
  3. I made two 300-mile car journeys recently with my Legend HCx plugged into the car's cigarette lighter socket. I saw during each journey that the GPSr had inexplicably shut down of its own accord. Can anyone explain this? The Track Log was set to 'On', 33% filled at most; the Track Log Setup 'Wrap When Full' is checked; the Record Method is set to 'Auto'; the Interval was set to 'Normal' for the outward journey and 'Least Often' for the return journey; the Data Card Setup 'Log Track To Data Card' is checked. I had set a route using an uploaded OpenStreetMap extract, which appeared to be navigating correctly. Even if there was a loss of power through the cigarette lighter socket for any reason, the GPSr would operate on its own batteries, displaying the 'External Power Lost' message, as it does when the engine is switched off. It is frustrating because it can be some distance before it is recognised the GPSr has shut down, and the track data for that period is lost, of course.
  4. Thanks, Timpat; I am indebted to you. Certainly, my 'Log Track To Data Card' was NOT checked! It is now. (I must have been fiddling with the settings at some point.).
  5. I am aware suddenly that I cannot find any details of the daily track information that my Legend HCx used to record regardless of whether Track Log was On or Off. I am not sure now whether it was recorded on the micro SD card or in the internal memory (although I believe it must have been on the card for me to see the daily dates themselves), nor whether the GPSr requires a particular setting to be activated for it to record daily events, which I might have inadvertently changed. The folder structure and content of my micro SD card are: Garmin>gpx (folder containing found caches), gmapsupp.img, Poi (folder containing custom points of interest). Solved.
  6. Oz, Thanks for your suggestion. I understand the sense of the dictionary in the .mp file and appreciate how it would save time, but am unsure how to implement it. Is there a reference that will explain in detail how to construct a dictionary?
  7. Oz, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I agree that the process in my case of importing about thirteen vector layers and setting the levels does not take a particularly long time now that I know the level for each layer off by heart. It was just that, over time, I have been able to semi-automate the processes leading up to importing ESRI shape files into GPSMapEdit, and it seemed the next logical step to take, if possible. With regards
  8. Oz, Thanks for your response. If I understand your tutorial correctly, I think I have not explained my requirement very well: If I have, say, ten 100 mile square tiles or ten adjoining administrative areas of vector mapping, I wish to create ten .mp and .img files for uploading selectively to my GPSr according to the specific area in which I am currently interested or through which I am travelling. Does that make more sense?
  9. Can anyone advise one who is computer-not-too-literate if there is a method whereby the import into GPSMapEdit of numerous tiles of ESRI shapefiles each containing such as gazetteer, different road classes and rails can be automated so that the procedure does not have to be repeated for every tile of data?
  10. Roybassist, I'm most grateful to you; both issues solved by switching to Standard Display Mode.
  11. The structure to this section of the Groundspeak Forum appears to have changed recently in that all posts subsequent to the first one are listed, whereas they previously followed on in full. Two points about this: 1. It's more convuluted to return to the main page, by having to click back and back and back. 2. In the cases of the replies stretching over two or more pages, I find that when I click on a post on the second or any subsequent page, an error message is returned: "Board Message Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: Sorry, some required files are missing, if you intended to view a topic, it's possible that it's been moved or deleted. Please go back and try again.". Perhaps I have unwittingly caused these things to happen, in which case I should appreciate some advice.
  12. I have a number of POI files in different folders, which I am familiar with loading to my Garmin Legend HCx, using POI Loader. Three questions now arise, however: 1. I have a number of folders within which I have one or more .csv files. The number of .csv files that I have in some folders is rather large, with the consequence that there is a long list to scroll through in the Legend's 'Custom POI' list (I have chosen to break the country down by region in the belief that if I can select that particular database in my GPSr, the search willl be conducted more quickly - some of the files have tens of thousands of records). If I create a sub-folder in which to put these many .csv files, they are now under one heading in the 'Custom POI' list, but I have lost the ability to select a particular region, because if I click on that new heading, the GPSr will immediately conduct a search, instead of next providing me with a list from which to select my required region. Is there a way to overcome this, or should I really use 'Change Reference' in the Menu to facilitate a quick search? 2. Is there a limit to the number of databases that the Legend can hold and display in 'Custom POI'? 3. Garmin seems not to use alphabetical listing when loading POI files. Sometimes, it seems as though it might be by date, at other times it seems random. Is there a method by which the 'Custom POI' display can be made to appear alphabetically? My thanks in anticipation.
  13. I have read quite a lot about Ram mounts on this thread and have liked what I have subsequently seen on their website for my Garmin Legend HCx. Does anyone know of a supplier in the United Kingdom for these products?

  15. The manual can be found at http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/gentyp_inst_en. The colours are defined as hexadecimal codes. Try here: http://images.google.com/images?q=hexadeci...es&ct=title. Enter the code for the colour of your choice. I generally use the same code for foreground and background. In the case of 0001 'Major highway', however, I use ffffff,0099cc and foreground and background widths of 1,2 that display a blue motorway with a white central reservation. The Priority, or draw order, is useful to determine what sits on top of what. For example. I have four polygons: 1. a background polyon, for which I use 0001 'Large urban area' 2. an urban area, for which I use 0002, 'Small urban area' 3. a city park, for which I use 0017, 'City park' 4 . open water, for which I use 0029, 'Blue-Unknown. I want to see open water running through the park that is in an urban area on top of my map coverage. The draw order would be as numbered above. Make sure you check the 'Compile TYP:' box. Personally, I have found GenTYP to be excellent for changing line and polygon styles, and organising draw orders which, when the .typ file accompanies the .img file in uploading to the GPSr, can give a much improved result over the standard representation. Good luck!
  16. I have been uploading custom vector mapping successfully to my Legend HCx for some time now using an established procedure. I create a .mp file in GPSMapEdit, export it to a .img file through cGPSmapper, make my own style override .typ file with GenTYP and, finally, create and upload a gmapsupp.img file through Img2gps. I am very pleased with the results. I was delighted to find recently the facility to upload a raster image, using Moagu. I have now attempted to load both vector mapping and raster image of the same area using Img2gps. In the first case, when I load the files in the order of vector data followed by raster image files in Img2gps, I discover that, although the raster image tile outlines are visible when I zoom out, the raster image itself does not display at the level of 500 feet that it is supposed to do. The vector mapping displays correctly with its style override. In the second case, when I load the maps in the order of raster image followed by vector mapping files, the raster image displays with the vector mapping on top, but the vector mapping displays default styles, not the style override styles. In both cases I have used the .typ file associated with the vector mapping .img file. The use or not of the .typ file associated with the raster image makes no difference. The map detail is set to normal in my Legend. I have fought shy of using MapSet Toolkit and MapSource because of the Registry involvement in the process, and would rather not go down that road. I wonder whether anyone has any bright ideas to help me overcome this issue, or explain what is happening? Posts: 1 Joined: Thu May 15, 2008 8:33 pm Private messageE-mail
  17. Thanks, Klatch, but I am at this moment successfully copying and viewing GMAPSUPP files.
  18. I have been using Garmin's POI Loader very successfully over a lengthy period to load thousands of different custom points of interest from numerous files, up to as late as yesterday. Today, with the GPSr interface connected through the same cable into the same USB port on the computer, I get the message, "There was a problem copying the data to the data card. The device is not ready.". POI Loader identifies the same local drive initially. Yet, even using a .csv file that I successfully loaded yesterday, I get the same message. Does anyone have a clue as to why? My thanks in anticipation. Just ignore me! It seems that from one computer session to the next, the local drive for my GPSr had changed from F:/ to J:/.
  19. I am sure I have done this before, but am not able to now: select part of an Active Log in Track Properties in MapSource, Control+C or use the Copy icon, then Control+V or Edit>Paste in a newly opened MapSource. I have no difficulty in selecting the whole Active Log from the lefthand panel and pasting it into a new copy of MapSource, but it is copying and pasting the selection of a portion of the Active Log that is baffling me, most especially as I believe I have done it before. My further investigation following my initial post reveals a method, but I know this is different to what I have done previously: check Tools>Track Point Select in MapSource and select a track section on the map. Copying and Pasting into a new copy of MapSource works.
  20. Would someone kindly explain the meaning and uses of TRE and RGN in MapEdit.exe>MapProperties>cGPSMapper and what the initial letters stand for? The dialog displays TRE size: 511 and RGN limit: 127 by default. I have read in numerous places that 1024 is used for the RGN limit. I have created one GMAPSUPP.img file from nine .img and .typ grid squares of custom mapping and copied that into the microSD card of my LegendHCx. The mapping displays perfectly adequately and draws quickly with the default values, but I am intrigued to understand the differences that adjusting these values would make. Also, I note that having loaded a GMAPSUPP.img file of 1.6Mb, together with a Poi folder that contains six .gpi files totalling 17Mb a green bar showing '89%' displays at the foot of my Legend HCx screen on rebooting. Does the GPS device have its own limit on how much mapping and/or points of interest can be loaded at any one time?
  21. I can successfully load a .csv list of Custom POI's to my Legend HCx microSD card using entries such as: -1.0233,51.4429,"RG30 3PJ" where RG30 3PJ is a ZIP or postcode. What I wish to do is access further information using the fourth 'Comment' column such as: -1.0233,51.4429,"RG30 3PJ","West Berkshire". I am unsure whether this information loads, because I select Find>Custom Points of Interest; the Custom POI page locates the nearest points and displays them; I press 'Enter' and I get a Proximity Alarm page but no fourth column information. Am I taking the wrong steps to locate the information?
  22. I have successfully loaded some vector mapping data into my Garmin Legend HCx via GPSMapEdit, cGPSmapper and Img2gps. I am not using MapSource. Do I assume correctly that if I wish to modify that data by changing its appearance, say road styles, and bringing in new data such as a polygonal grid, I may do so through genTYP in the following manner, having already imported the necessary data into GpsMapEdit and exported the resulting .mp file to a .img file through cGPSmapper: 1. Make the required modifications in genTYP. 2. Click 'START' to create my .typ file, ignoring 'Compile TYP' because I do not wish to use MapSource. 3. Use Img2gps to select my required .img file(s) and .typ file and create gmapsupp.img for copying to my microSD card. I should appreciate any confirmation or correction. My item 2. is nonsense. I see that now, having used genTYP in practice. I have modified some roads styles and seen the effects of the changes when I have created a gmapsupp.img file of my vector mapping data .img file and my related .typ file and copied it to my microSD card. I am still having difficulty with urban areas and a grid or graticule transparent polygon, however.
  23. I am extremely impressed with the choice of lines, points and polygons avaialble for use in GPSMapEdit. I have been applying them to vector mapping data that I eventually load into my Garmin Legend HCx via cGPSmapper and Img2gps very successfully. I have three queries arising, however: 1. Neither of the two urban area polygon styles I have tried display at all in my Garmin, yet something like City parks displays perfectly, with any line or point features appearing on top. I should have thought urban areas would have worked in the same way. 2. I am surprised that there is no symbol for a railway (railroad) station. I should have thought that would be an important feature so far as locating in GIS is concerned. 3. I should like to have the facility to load a grid or graticule for referencing and identification purposes (this would be an outlined transparent polygon file, with a grid reference attribute for each square). I should appreciate any observations or advice.
