  1. quote:Originally posted by BeachBum22:Here's the bug: 1. User creates benchmark log. 2. User uploads pictures. 3. User deletes benchmark log. 4. User recreates benchmark log. There's a related bug: if you add a log entry to a BM (e.g., a find or a note), then delete that log entry, the BM will always show up in the list of BMs returned on the "List of items found" page for your account, even though you have no apparent association with that BM.
  2. quote: There are three RM's in a row on a hotel building ledge. EW7890 is sort of like that. The BM and two RMs are in a line, about 10 feet away from each other, on the top of a parking garage.
  3. quote:Originally posted by Kissimmee Kouple:I saw where a hole had been cut in the asphalt and then patched. The circimference of the hole was painted with orange paint with the inscription "RT-MP-014". Can I "ethically" claim this as a find? The main benchmarking page says: "You can log "Found it!" if you see the marker and know that it is the correct marker. If the marker is a survey disk, you must read the disk."
  4. quote:Originally posted by Indiana Cojones:I wonder whether the Rino would access the higher memory or not? Likewise with a Legend or Vista. It's not very likely devices like these would have the software to "detect" the amount of memory attached; it's much more likely to be hard-coded into the software.
  5. quote:Originally posted by chiro:However, right next to the description of the V, it clearly states that it usually ships within 24 hours. That should probably say "ships within 24 hours with paid shipping." quote:My question is this, do you think since they've went to free shipping on anything over $25, they'll actually wait the full 5-9 days before the GPS even gets on the truck headed my way? I only use free shipping from Amazon. Lately, things ship to me typically in 3 days, and get here typically 2-3 days after shipping. I've never seen something in stock ship anywhere close to the estimated ship date; it's always earlier by several days.
  6. quote:Originally posted by BeachBum22:GPS coordinates very close. Since the mark is SCALED, you can't really conclude too much from a coordinate match. quote:The data sheet says the designation is "872 0030 TIDAL 2".Don't read too much into the DESIGNATION; as the NGS says, "Usually the DESIGNATION does not match exactly with the STAMPING." Your marker has a STAMPING entry in the datasheet which exactly matches what you found. Sometimes there is no STAMPING entry in the datasheet, but the stamping is described in the STATION DESCRIPTION.
  7. quote:Originally posted by BeachBum22:And I'm still confused as to why you have taken on the task of verifying what other people find. I think he was simply noting that the number of benchmarks available for him to hunt is too small to be limited to those that haven't been searched for by other players. So he searches for some that have been logged "found", and finds them to be destroyed. quote:I think one of the rules is that you can't log a benchmark unless you can read the designation stamped on it.No, the rule is that you can't log it found unless you can read the designation. You can still log notes, not found, and destroyed. There was some discussion here recently bemoaning that only "founds" show up in one's stats, while many feel that other log entries should also show up. quote:Is there a FAQ for Benchmarking? The main pages thanks a few people for updating it, but I'll be darn if I can find it. Where are the "official rules"?I think the main page is the FAQ, if you scroll down.
  8. The only place I'm aware of that you can add notes is on the Calendar.
  9. quote:Originally posted by TopoGrafix:ExpertGPS won't run under emulation. EasyGPS will. Sorry. I just downloaded ExpertGPS, and it installs and runs fine under Win4Lin.
  10. quote:Originally posted by infosponge:Did you have to do anything special to get EasyGPS working? Nothing at all. But Win4Lin isn't Wine-based; it has a real copy of Win98 running under it.
  11. I run TOPO!, Maptech Terrain Navigator, Mapsource TOPO, Metroguide 5, EasyGPS, and Garmin firmware updater successfully under Win4Lin on RedHat 7.3.
  12. quote:Originally posted by Thompson Family:I can't get right to it and confirm that the markings are correct. I'm sorely tempted to report is as recovered in good condition with a note that the mark is behind a locked gate but appears to be fine. The benchmarking main page says, "If the marker is a survey disk, you must read the disk. The designation (its name) stamped on it must match the Designation in the description. Reading the disk is necessary because another disk could have been set within a few feet of the one you're looking for."
  13. quote:Originally posted by Bob K.:Mapsource in order to see the maps and a route easier? You can go to the Waypoints tab to the left of the map, do a Ctrl-A to select all waypoints, then right click and Cut. You can paste them back later.
  14. quote:Originally posted by Roughneck 2-0:Can anyone tell me if loading both MG-USA and TOPO is even possible on an eTrex Vista? It works on a Legend, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't work on a Vista.
  15. I often come across datasheets that say a benchmark is located "in the top of culvert 924.9" or something similar. I've never been able to find one of these numbers on a culvert. Is there a "standard" place where these are put, or do they only exist on a piece of paper?
  16. quote:Originally posted by McIntyre Mob:The disk read RE 2177, Glendora.G.10, R.M. No.1. 1937 Was it in LA county?
  17. quote:Originally posted by Bron Co.:Do you use the coords and the descriptions to locate them, or do you just plug in the coords and try to find where to go? Here's a good example of what kind of finds get logged if you just load coordinates into your GPS...
  18. quote:Originally posted by eightbit:1) i'd like to change the information that pops up when i turn on the unit. is there a way to do that? i've decided that i want to put my phone number on there and can't find the menu choice that allows me to do that. Go to the main menu, then to the options dropdown (the leftmost of the two buttons in the upper right corner of the screen). That takes you to the Owner Information screen which lets you do what you want. quote:2) when out caching yesterday, the Goto/compass feature seemed to be a bit off. the compass would show me the right direction until i had passed the cache and then the distance to the point would start rising again, but the compass would still be pointing me in a direction away from the cache. anyone have that problem? It's not really a compass. It shows direction based on keeping track of which way you're moving. If you're not moving, or only moving a small amount, it doesn't show you any meaningful information.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Bron Co.:What do you guys do to find u'r marks? Do you use the coords and the descriptions to locate them, or do you just plug in the coords and try to find where to go? Using only the coordinates and not the description, you might find the wrong benchmark. It's not uncommon for a benchmark to have several other benchmarks in the immediate area, one of which might happen to be at the coordinates you're looking for, if they're scaled.
  20. quote:Originally posted by Black Dog Trackers:In order to say you've found a station, it must have the same Designation (its name) on the disk as in the PID description. Disks never have the PID on them. They have the Designation instead. I have found disks that have a Designation that doesn't correlate to the stamping. There is a series of benchmarks designated "XX C OF V" which neither the XX nor the "C OF V" appears on the disk. For example, EW5280 has a designation "44 C OF V", yet the description says "STAMPED CITY OF SAN BUENAVENTURA BENCH MARK." I've found several City of Ventura (C OF V) benchmarks, and they are always stamped CITY OF SAN BUENAVENTURA BENCH MARK YY-100, where the YY does not equal the XX in the desigation. I've not been able to figure out what the XX in the designation means. quote:a Reference mark will say Reference on it, or perhaps just "R 1" or "R 4", etc. Or sometimes "RM" or "R.M.".
  21. quote:Originally posted by mustanglx:This may sound like a stupid question, but how the heck are you to use BMGPX!!! Assuming you have downloaded a ".dat" file from NGS named ca123.dat, just do: bmgpx ca123.dat ca123.gpx
  22. quote:Originally posted by Black Dog Trackers:Perhaps each person's profile should have a not-found count as well as a found count. I'll second that. And why not also add a count of benchmarks found that were previously "not found" by other players, and a count of "skull" benchmarks?
  23. Where should geochaching.com bugs be reported that are of a security-related nature and shouldn't be posted publicly? I tried emailing contact@Groundspeak.com but got no reply.
  24. quote:Originally posted by RogBarn:Short of having some committee that reviews and approves all benchmark logs, I don't know what the answer is. And, in the long run, it will create rules, red tape and bad feelings, so I'm not sure it is worth it. I don't think anything so formal is required. It'd just be nice to be able to report an obviously wrong "find" somehow.
  25. quote:Originally posted by jeff35080:If I am going to play a game with other people, I expect them to play by the same rules. The rules, in this case, involve finding a benchmark be it disk, rod, etc., the game is not to find a witness post/sign. I agree; yes it's all for fun, but games are rarely fun when not all of the players play by the rules. And I think the rules are very clear when it comes to survey disks, if we are to go by the main benchmark hunting page. I don't see any room for debate or interpretation when it comes to a "find." Things like "couldn't find" vs. "destroyed" vs. "note" are another matter. I guess the real question is whether what's stated on the Benchmark Hunting web page constitutes "rules," or are they simply guidelines that everyone is free to ignore?
