  1. Besides the added benefits of pocket queries and audit logs, etc. I am a PM to help support the game that I enjoy. All my caches except 1 or 2 are PMO's for the reason that I have less piracy that way and I feel if you enjoy the game then help support it . All the equipment and computers are very expensive. No matter how you look at it geocaching is not free. How about the $2-300 gps , the geo vehicle , the gas , etc ? Whats another $30 to help support the cause.
  2. Simple way to cure this problem is to send the coords to your reviewer before you place the cache and ask if the area is open. I do it all the time, especially when building puzzle caches.
  3. The true benefit of Premium memberships is simple. If you want to geocache using Geocaching.com then help support it. If all members were basic members there wouldn't be a Geocaching.com, simple.
  4. Most expensive I put out for an FTF was a set of topaz ear rings and necklace I had made, value around $150 . Made a great FTF for a micro that was a bit of work to get to.
  5. Mine started out "Way2manyballs" because I used to work at a golf course and I had thousands of balls that I would sell on Ebay. Shortened it to W2B because it was easier to put on those tiny logs.
  6. Here's another one ....Maybe it is a basic member that has it in for Premium Member only caches? Just had 6 of mine stolen in the last week in the same area, all premium only caches. All a basic member needs to get the coords is a premium member friend that will give them to them.
  7. One way to do the caches would be to build a pocket query using the cache number in the center and then reduce your distance to less than 10 miles. Also you could possibly build a klm file using google maps. Doing these you can set the distance on both sides of your route to include caches say within 1/2 mile of the chosen route. hopefully this might give you a starting place
  8. hey if you want the really powerful magnets check out magnets4less on ebay, they have a huge assortment and affordable. Thats where I get mine.
  9. 100% of the caches I have found have a smiley and 100% of my cache hides have a smiley so that 100- 100 ratio?
  10. the only caches of mine that have disappeared other than by nature have been well hidden and nowhere near any muggle traffic
  11. My sister has just purchased a Magellan Triton 300 and I can't seem to get to count down below 1 tenth of a mile when approaching a cache. Anyone have any ideas out there?
  12. *scratches head* So there was no evidence "a grenade went off", to quote your first post? But you started this thread without even checking that first? And then you scold people for jumping to the "archive it" conclusion? I'm confused. Wouldn't it have been better to check first and post after, or not at all, since it doesn't seem warranted now? you may misunderstand me. There was evidence of searching going on but a lot of it had had some attempt at repair by following cachers. I didn't scold anyone about the archiving, it just strikes me as something that the first conclusion by some are to archive it. Oh, there may be a problem ...archive it! Have a cache you did a good job on so its hard to find....archive it! You know what I mean? I did a good job of the camo, the cache is in plain sight! People are making it a lot harder than it has to be, all they have to do is walk over to it , pick it up, open it and log it.
  13. Went and checked on the cache and discovered rocks turned over and that kind of thing but no uprooted plants, also someone had tried to turn the rocks back over. Some damage but not nearly as bad as the desert free dumps within walking distance, or the quad runners free track association in the area. I still am in awe of how many gave a first response of " archive it" as if this is always the answer. I have a hard time archiving a cache that I have a lot of personal time in the creation of just because the first few couldn't find it and one jerk decided to disturb every rock within 50 ft. Most of the damage has been repaired and chances are the perp won't return because they don't log dnf's and aren't going to return and waste their time trying to find something after tearing up that much without a find the first time. Anyway I do appreciate the responses which did help me decide to get back out there and check sooner than I would have otherwise. As far as my being concerned about damage because of the cautionary statements in my cache listing. I am always concerned about damage in the desert, but the only way to have zero damage with a desert cache is to not have a desert cache at all. Which would put cachers in the great southwest out of business. I just ask that people be aware of their surroundings a little.
  14. I was very careful to not be seen in the hiding, and without giving the cache away I seriously don't think it was casually carried off. The first DNF logged was by cachers that are known to me so I can believe what they have reported as they don't tend embelish.
  15. Jumping to the conclusion that archiving it is the answer is a bit premature. The hide is good but not impossible like some in this desert. The area is not especially environmentally sensitive, it's just that it torques me to see a total lack of care by a fellow cacher. This kind of person would do the same damage in a parking lot without a thought or a care!
  16. The cache is tricky but does not require turning every rock over for a country mile. It does require using some thought and a pair of eyes. Its just my feeling that the responsible party is so concerned to get #100 or #500 (etc) that they probably do this everywhere. The area in question is not especially sensitive but I still wish a little care had been taken.
  17. I placed a really tricky caches out in the desert, listed it as such, and asked cachers to please respect the area and the desert life. cache GC1A4YH. Well the first to log their visit said that the area looked liked a grenade went off. I have listed this as a premium members only with the hopes that this would help in this matter of tearing things up. Don't cachers realize that this is exactly why we aren't allowed in the National Parks, and that is why private owners will start to not allow us, or do they just not care? sorry for the rant but I just have to vent. There should be some way that cachers like that could be reported if they are discovered and removed from geocaching and lose the ability to get coords! At least that is the way I feel.
  18. can anyone explain in plain english how to upload a photo to the forums whne making a reply? what is this url thingy, isn't that a web address?
  19. not to start a war or anything but I personally know of caches that have been placed by well seasoned (400+ finds) cachers without permission on private property simply because they have other caches in the same area that were placed before the land was purchased 3 years ago by the current owner. They have to drive by trespassing signs to get there and do it anyway. So amount of caches found or hidden have nothing to do with ethics and following the rules.
  20. I know you have good intentions. I know you are not an evil cacher, trust me I know one. Cache swag is notorious for going downhill, usually shortly after being placed. That's one of the reasons why we tout the slogan 'Trade even, Trade up, or Don't trade at all'. That's the best we can do in most cases. I personally don't trade for swag that often but I do carry a fairly large supply. If the cache is depleted I'll be happy to add in a few extra items without taking a thing. And I leave things for kids. People will sometimes complain that there are no trade items for adults. I don't care. You want stuff? Go buy it yourself, because I'm leaving this stuff for the youngsters. There are plenty of threads discussing the depletion of swag. You aren't alone. Travelers however are not swag. They are not part of the items that should be traded for and that often have to be replenished by the cache owner. They are part of the community. They are a connection with other cachers and that is far better than any trade item could ever hope for. I couldn't even tell you how many people I've conversed with, just because of travel bugs. Many have become good friends and some I would even say, close. No, it's not about fair trade. It's about meeting the goal. It's about keeping it alive. It's about taking pictures, telling stories, and having fun. One of my favorites was the guy who carried my daughters bug through 14 states. Mount Rushmore, 2nd oldest cache just to mention the highlights. Now that's traveling. totally off the topic but have you ever cached in the Laughlin, NV area? I found a blue duckie today that looks just like your pict on the forum here?
  21. Just a fast response, "TB Prison" ......I have never locked up a TB or Coin or made it unmovable and have never accosted anyone when they are moving one. I just think there should be some sense of ethics and fair play involved. I have come across several caches that list all kinds of swag when originally placed only to find it nearly empty except for an eraser or card, etc.! The idea of trade items, etc, etc kinda goes under the rug when you have those cachers running around taking, taking, taking, taking.......and never replacing anything. That my fellow cachers is where my real problem lies. And that is why I get upset when someone takes all the trackables.....because they never place one they just take!
  22. big bag for the big days and when taking out ammo can caches to place, little bag for the short days close to home, carry water in my pocket.
  23. I would ban placing caches more than 100 miles from home base , unless you could prove you had someone to take care of it! I hate vacation trash caches!
  24. My biggest concern about stealth is when someone hides an almost impossible to find small cache, places all kinds of misleading piles of rock and stuff around the area to make the finding even more difficult, asks for his fellow cachers to use every ounce of stealth to avoid discovery. It is placed on top of a hill in a vacant lot surrounded by houses and apartment complexes!!! If this is where they want to place their caches then they could at least make them large enough to make a quick grab, log, and go. I shake my head and leave and will take the dnf never to return.
  25. okay with all the heat taken for this one I have removed all stipulations on my hotel, and will see what happens! My bet is it will get emptied and will be long and slow at getting traffic simply because of our lack of density as population goes. Before I go I want to make one statement as to tb's and trade items such as coins. Some coins cost a lot of money and it is not unreasonable to expect someone to leave a coin if they take a coin, do you agree???? As I have learned from the last event I was at and having this hotel 99.999 percent of the cachers out there fail to make a distinction between bugs and coins in caches! They take them all!!!!!
