  1. The Hardest one I did so far was a multi called Bradens Cache. It was small aluminum tags very well hidden. It took 6 hrs. The worst terrain so far was on a local mountain called bishops peak. There was a lot of poison oak, and a loose rock rolled down and smashed my finger. We didn't get to the cache location.
  2. I got a new unit. The lockup problem is not an issue on this one. By the way, the old unit locked up with or without the memory card.
  3. Garmin was supposed to sen me another unit on thursday, but I have yet to see it. I used the one I have today, and it locked up 5 times. I think it is just a defect though, and doesn't have anything to do with the 2.6 update. Also, I tried a reset and that didn't help.
  4. Has anyone who updated to the 2.6 software had problems with their unit locking up? My replacement units locks up about every 5-10 minutes, and I was wondering if it is the software or if this unit is just junk. Anyway, Garmin claims they are working on a software fix and that it is due to my maps Topo 2008 however the other unit did not exibit this behavior. Thanks
  5. I might just want my money back. I got my new unit, did the software upgrade 2.6,2.6 everything seemed great. I then went down to get a burger at the local in and out. While waiting in the drive through I decided to make a waypoint. The unit froze. I got it to shut down although it just kinda faded out. So then I was talking on the phone sitting in the parking lot and then drove away. To my dismay the location arrow followed me to the highway and then stopped. Again the unit was frozen. I am really upset by this. I would think that if they were sending a unit to a customer who already had an issue they would test it first. I was thinking it could be due to my memory card, but it worked fine in the other unit. I do not wish to send it back again.
  6. Well it arrived. It works just fine when I first powered it on no washed out screen. However they did not take the time to do the software update. 2.2,2.3. No big deal, just interesting.
  7. I am glad to hear this. It is too bad I had to send mine in though. I will be interested to see if they installed the latest software before they shipped it.
  8. I got a message from garmin saying that a new unit has been shipped to me. Hopefully this one will take care of the issue. It is now in Ontario CA so i should have it tomorrow night. I will let you know. I would think that it will have the latest software but we will see. Any word on if the new software is a fix?
  9. I find it interesting that they sent your unit back unfixed. I am begining to wonder why they even had me send mine in. Maybe they are thinking that if mine does it more often they will be able to better diagnose the problem. I will be very dissapointed if I get it back in three weeks and it still does the same thing. I appreciate their efforts but it cost me $15 to get it there not to mention the time without it. Anyway, mine wont even be there till the first of FEB so I guess we will just have to wait and see what comes of it. I was thinking though about the different factors that could contribute to this issue. If not temp, could it be barometric pressure? I am usually between 800 and 2000 feet when it occours. Anyone know the elevation of Olathe. Maybe I am thinking too hard. I do know that mine does it with or without the SD card in it and seems to do it any time it is under 60 deg f. It will even do it if I have run it for an hour, shut it down for a few mins and then turn it back on. Strange.
  10. Well I sent mine out today. It will be interesting to see if I just get a replacement or what.
  11. Yes It is going back for the display issues. I have yet to send it though due to time issues.
  12. Finally got my return authorization. Looks like My Gpsr is on it way to Kansas. Oh well. We had a good weekend of geocaching.
  13. My rep has dissapeared. Well not really. about a week ago I got an email saying he needed to know what model I had. Which I thought was weird because he had my SN and I had said in previous emails but anyway, I replied and he never got back to me. he was supposed to send a return authorization.anyway, It seems that maybe he is waiting to see if it can be fixed with software. I wanted to have it for this upcoming 3day weekend so its ok with me. Please let me know if any of you get any info thanks
  14. I got mine around Christmas time and found that if the Vista HCX is left in the car (Michigan) that it has the same problem. So far, turning it off and back on one time fixes the problem. My better solution has been to keep the unit inside and warm which thus far has worked 100%. Garmin has a problem for sure - they just need to witness it themselves since they can't trust us. . . . . I dont think it is a trust issue. But I would encourage each of you to report the problem to Garmin. Maybe if more of us contact them they will devote more man power. I really do think it is temp related though because yesterday after work mine started up just fine.
  15. The garmin rep says that the display should work fine down to 5deg f. We almost never see temps that cold here in central CA, and if we do, I will save my geocaching for warmer days. I know, I am a sissy but my toes have poor circulation.
  16. Sorry about the double post my computer had a coniption.
  17. Well I got an email back from Garmin and they want me to send my unit in. They say I should have it back within 10 days of them receiving it so I guess I am looking at two weeks of no geocaching. Oh well at least it is winter. I will keep you posted of what comes of this.

  19. Garmin emailed me today. they said they had not heard of this problem. I referenced to this post so hopefully they will look and see the pictures. If any of you are dealing with them my case # is KMM1885714I10971L0KM so possibly it will help them to link each of these problems. Thanks. Nathan Claud
  20. yep, thats exactly what mine does. Still waiting for a reply from Garmin.
  21. It seems that maybe the receiver and display are booting at the same time and using too much power, or processing ability.
  22. Well, It sounds as if you have the same problem I do. I am very interested in hearing what comes of your dillema. We too do not run the heater in our house at night, or day, too much $. At first I thought it did it all the time, but once it got warm around here it started working correctly. I have sent an email to Garmin tech support so I am waiting to hear back from them. The problem doesnt really bother me but I do not want to get into a situation where the unit will never power up correctly. I have noticed though that it seems to boot up faster in the low contrast condition. I have loaded the latest software 2.5 which made it so the backlight did not come on when first powered up. Unfortunately that did not fix the problem. Thank you for your reply. i hope that garmin can come up with a quick fix for this because my wife made me wait till Christmas for this unit, and I do not want to be without it for a long time.
  23. Bringing it to the top for a new day thanks.
  24. Just tried that, still same result, but thanks for the advice.
