  1. If you have "an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer" you surely wouldn't have a problem. I'm not sure how Garmin deals with warranty on gifts or prizes -- or any other claim without proof of purchase from an authorized dealer or previous device registration.

They're usually pretty good on customer support though. I'd guess they'd give the someone the benefit of the doubt, maybe just check the serial number to see when it was manufactured.

  2. ...This unit hasn't been registered, so the warranty period hasn't begun.

    Are you sure about warranty?

Check Garmin's warranty terms and conditions. In your opening post you say you "won this off another site" - implies a contest or an online auction. But according to Garmin, "Products purchased through online auctions are not eligible for warranty coverage. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification. To obtain warranty service, an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required."

  3. ...27 glossy color photos...
That's not good enough. You'll also need ...

"...plaster tire tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles

and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence ... pictures of the approach, the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that's not to mention the aerial photography..."

'Course, the volunteer cache reviewer in this case will have a seein' eye-dog, in a classic case of American blind justice!

  4. Can't answer your Geobucket question as I'm not familiar with that app.

But to answer th other part: Geosphere allows you to transfer GPX files (those you made your self, or from Geocaching.com pocket queries) from your computer to the iPod Touch or iPhone. There's a specific sectionof the App tab in iTunes for transfering files to and from the device.

Whether or not this is any better/faster than downloading them directly into the app over WiFi would be very much up to the user. I almost never send GPX files TO my iPhone using iTunes. But I very frequently download my pocket queries from GC.com directly to the phone "over the air" -- then filter those and copy them TO my computer to use them in other software.

More than one way to skin a query.

  5. ...it may have turn-by-turn navigation but if its anything like on the Legend HCx it'll be unusable for long cycle routes (50 waypoint maximum)...

I've used eTrex Legend HCx (and a Garmin Foretex 301) many times in lieu of a queue sheet -- and I never use turn by turn routing. I create a track (which can have thousands of points) and upload that to the GPS. When I'm riding it shows as a thick dark line on the GPS map. Visually I find it less distracting, and the bends and curves in the line are enough to let m know where to turn.

I actually preferred the Foretrex monochrome screen for this over the HCx -- better contrast and less distraction from the map. I'm really looking forward to getting my eTrex 10 as the best of both of those worlds.

  6. I don't know the command strings, or if there even is a proprietary sentence you can send. I think you need to use SiRF's binary protocol to turn static navigation on/off. Been a long time since I played with this.

    Google sirf static navigation on/off

because the internet as a whole has a much better memory than I do.

  7. The only reason I can imagine anyone buying an eTrex H today is if they had prior investment in software or mounting brackets, and/or need to connect it to an older style RS-232 port. Some navigation systems might call for that, but that doesn't sound like what you're after.

So, if we eliminate the eTrex H from consideration -- are you sure the eTrex 10 is really your only choice? Then we get back to "how will you be using it?" I see the eTrex 10 as an ideal choice IF you're ONLY going to be geocaching on the cheap and don't ever want to spend another dime on equipment. It'll probably be good for cyclists and hikers who don't venture out into really rough terrain (actually, I have an eTrex 10 on order specifically as a data-logger for my bike rides).

But if you see yourself going beyond that, you might eventually be looking at a higher-end model anyhow. In that case, just buy the eTrex 10 now if it's the most you can afford, and understand that in a year or two you'll be handing it down to your kids or friends when you get something better.

  8. You might have better luck unbundling your items; list them separately. If you get a nibble on the GPS, offer the data card as an extra at a low-ball price. There are so many high-quality maps available from so many sources it's hard to recoup anything on maps at resale.

Look on eBay completed auctions. Selling price range for used, refurbs, etc... has mostly been from $160 to $250. And if you want to make a quick sale, you have to aim for the lower part of that range.

  9. I'm sorry you're in such a "huge tough spot."

If you're interested in making a quick sale (because you need the money "like yesterday"), consider checking what current selling prices are for comparable used products, and aim for the low end of that range for selling yours. You might check CamelCamelCamel, which shows pricing trends for Amazon.com and 3rd party new/used prices, as well as searching completed eBay auction.

  10. You shouldn't need to pay again if your iPad and iPhone are both link to the same computer and authorized to content from the same iTunes account. If you have separate iTunes accounts and purchases for each device are billed to separate users, then you'd have to pay again.

PS, you couldn't have bought the app "a couple of years ago for (your) iPhone 4" The iPhone 4 was released on June 24, 2010.
