Sure, I guess. Still, it takes a lot of the challenge out of it.
In this case, it also took something else away, something harder to describe: the feeling of looking at something nobody has noticed (or possibly even seen) for years.
Perhaps that's illusory to begin with. But a brightly colored flag destroys even the possiblity of enjoying the illusion.

Cool -- Now maybe I can let myself believe I really DIDN'T miss such an obvious signpost.
AND... Whoever planted the pink post YESTERDAY must have taken care to remove the several inches of brush and dirt which obscured my quest the day before. A perfectly believable excuse for missing the benchmark itself when I was standing right on it.
"Uh, yeah, thet's the ticket..."

I had Magellan's car-windshield mount for the SporTrak, but I canabilized it to make a bike-handlebar mount. I decided I needed the custom-fitted, securely latching cradle more on the bike than in the car.
In the car, I now use a generic windshield mount that was originally meant for a PDA or cellphone. It was a lot cheaper and it hold the GPS securely enough. It doesn't accomodate the power connector, but I use recharegable batteries and don't bother with the cord.

Funny thing about benchmark NE0413. The log entry I made doesn't tell the whole story.
I enjoyed figuring this one out because most of the landmarks described in the data-sheet (rails, the right of way fence, and the milepost marker) are gone. This part of the "Michigan Central Railway" is now the Paint Creek Trail, used mostly by joggers and bicyclists.
A few days ago, I went looking for NE0413 but didn't try very hard. I just made my best guess at the most likely spot, and resolved to come back later to find it.
Today, I went out to finish the job. And it was EXACTLY where I was looking a few days ago. BUT ... it was marked with a bright pink signpost. You can see it from the main trail 40 feet away. Where's the sport in finding something like that?
More importantly: I really don't remember seeing the post a few days ago. But even if someone hammered in the few days between my first and second visit, I had to have been standing right on top of the benchmark a few days ago and didn't see it.
Kinda takes the fun out of it when you end up worrying if you need an eye exam.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any idea who puts up the bright markers?
Lee.

I'm able to get by with a small and low-resolution monochrome screen -- but I'd really like higher contrast and less glare.

Terrabrowser from Chimoosoft is a front end to Microsoft's Terra Server which contains satellite imagery and topo maps from the US Geological Survey (USGS). The aim of this program is to provide a simpler and more user friendly interface to the data. It doesn't support all of the features of the Terra Server such as search by name/region, but it does allow direct entry of latitude/longitude and displays a marker at your current location. It also has extensive bookmarking capabilities.

Indeed - it should be easy to find a cache you posted, but how you found it on the Scrabble board is beyond me

Wondering why anyone would post a recap of a Scrabble game on a Geocahing forum, Lapaglia mumbled:

...decoding the grid and using the word values times the placement on the grid the cache is located at N39 36.780 W104 44.176
Is that right?
Nope -- you first clue should have been that I'm in Michigan and the coords you came up with are somewhere in Colorado.
I really was just surprised anyone else would be talking about Scrabble here, so I posted the recap of a recent and impressive match.
Now, the idea of hiding clues in some Scrabble related format, let me think ...
Nah, too psychotic even for me.

The following short quiz consists of four questions, and it will tell you whether you are qualified to be a professional. Scroll down for each answer. The questions are NOT difficult.
1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.
2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Did you say, "Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator?" (Wrong Answer) Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions.
3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

Correct Answer: The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory. OK, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.
4. There is a river you must cross but it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.
According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers.
Anderson Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four year old.

I understand all the frustrations re tourists placing caches and then not maintaining them, but I see no problem with a tourist pointing out a cool spot as a virtual cache.
My own example:
I did consider a waterproof container and log for this spot, but KNEW I couldn't maintain it from my home in Michigan. So I set up a virutal, and just challenged people to take the walk. Everytime someone logs a find, I get a reminder of that vacation
I hope nobody has a problem with that.

Now that we've conducted the searvch for meaning, does anyone else have other GPS-ing cartoons to post?
-
Dickies, maker of very practical work clothes, has unwittingly created the perfect pair of trousers for geocaching.
Their heavyweight "Workhorse" jeans have a misnamed "Cellphone Pocket." Really much larger than most cellphones; it's bigger than needed for my Magellan SporTrak Pro and would probably hold a Meridian.
Only thing I'm not sure of is if gadgets will stay put when running or climbing or any other activity where it might get bounces around. If they fail that test, I'll probably sew a button onto the pocket. Not to button it shut, but to attach the lanyard.

Would this be enough to power a GPS?
http://www.adsx.com/prodservpart/thermolife.html
This company, Applied Digital Solutions makes all sorts of wierd stuff that could be related to our hobby -- or Big brother. Wristwatch sized personal tracking devices. Implantable computer chips that can contain medical histories. Also working on a combination of those two ideas, an implantable chip with GPS capabilities.
But this ThermoLife thing seems to have the most commercial potential; intended as a power source for medical devices.
It might not pertain directly to our hobby here, except it's fascinating to think how SMALL this stuff can get.
Just rambling on an otherwise boring Friday night.
-
The same company, ADSX, also has something similar to what a few people mentioned. The "Digital Angel" is a strap-on tracking device. Would be great for skiers, hikers, pets, kids, medical test subjects, felons on house-arrest, etc :-)
Interesting stuff, at least...
The more I look at this company, the more interesting their stuff looks -- even apart from the "Big Brother" paranoia it inspires. Biochips, tracking implants and/or strap-ons, and a bio-battery (generates up to 3 volts from body heat). What next?

Clever. Reminds me of something from many years ago, when I had a bumper sticker that read "Question Authority".
Came out to my car one day to find a note on my windshield, which asked "Who are YOU to dictate my relationship with authority?!"

From a press release posted April 26, 2002: Applied Digital Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSX), an advanced technology development company, announced that in response to enormous customer demand it will accelerate its development of what it calls PLD or “personal location device” – a subdermal device that includes GPS emergency location capability. A working prototype of the device is expected in approximately seven months.

Anyhow, that "working prototype should be around any day now. So, would you get one?

Success, almost!
According to http://www.wheresmyrebate.com, my rebate request was denied because I mailed it after the offer expired.
I phoned and emailed, gave them a link to the original coupon, which showed the offer valid through MAY 2003...
http://www.magellangps.com/assets/chase.pdf
... and they said they would re-submit it. Today, it finally shows on their status page as APPROVED.
But get this: I bought the GPS late in June, mailed the rebate coupon on 11 July -- and the estimating mailing date for the check is projected as 13 October.
This may be the last time I go for a mail-in rebate on ANYTHING -- hardly worth the hassle and delays.
-
Has anyone been able to collect on this rebate offer?
The coupon was briefly linked to Magellan's page advertising the SporTrak Pro GPS. The PDF file is still there as I type this, though the link is no longer visible anywhere on Magellan/Thales website. I think they made some mistake posting the coupon and perhaps the offer was never approved to be made public. There are problems with how the coupon prints (tiny font, wierd colored backgrounds, and the name/address lines come out misaligned) -- makes me think whoever put it together didn't have time to check their work. But it WAS posted on their site for a while at least, and I wonder if they're still honouring it?
The complete text of the offer follows. Notice even though it says "subject to change without notice," by the original wording it would still be valid for several more months:

Go to the drugstore and buy some vitamin B1. Comes sin 100mg tables; bottles of 100 will set you back $2.
Take one tablet early in the day, at least an hour before you start hiking. Then another every hour or so. Drink lots of water.
Makes your sweat and your breath smell a little funny -- in a way the bugs don't like.
As for PEOPLE noticing it, just make sure everyone in your group uses it, so all of you will smell equally funny :-)

Around the beginning of June, I noticed Magellan did have an offer of a $25 rebate for the SporTrak Pro on their website. I bough one, then went back to their website to download the rebate coupon -- but now it's gone.
Does anyone have a copy of the coupon, or a valid URL for original PDF file?
This was NOT the "father's day special" which also required purchase of map software, it was for the GPS itself. Here are the details I know: Offer #7182, $25 off a SporTrak Pro purchased between May 1 2002 and May 30 2003.
Anybody else seen this? Have a copy?
-
Here's the one for the rebate when you buy the with the map software (has to be on same sales receipt)
Magellan (customer support on the phone) says there's no rebate available on JUST the SporTrak Pro, but I did find the coupon; just a hard copy, not the original PDF. I've bought several Magellan GPSs, and have ALWAYS had trouble getting the rebates. I dunno what their problem is.
