  1. going to work on the lower portion of this during Geowoodstock!
  2. Any events scheduled around the last 2 Space Shuttle launches? We will be attending the launch on November 1, 2010 and were hoping to find a local event to celebrate our 1500 milestone along with the launch! If no events we will will be looking for a good cache as close to the Kennedy Space Center as possible.
  3. DeLorme had issues with the 1.0.1 Not sure if they still do now though.
  4. you could also right click on the map and open in another tab or window to see all the caches.
  5. KJcachers. Grew up in Pine River, now living in Virginia. You can take the boy out of MN but you can't take the MN out of the boy!
  6. A word of advice, hold off placing a cache until you get about 50-100 finds under your belt. This will give you a greater understanding of hides and options to incorporate into your hides!
  7. What color is a hole? well, if the other holes surrounding it are shaded then you could go black. other than that you would need to paint it somewhat to mimic what the other holes look like. It's not rocket science. You would just have to have an imagination.
  8. what you want to do is make a magetic circle the same size and color as the holes and attach a log sheet to the back of it and stick it next to all the other holes.
  9. I run a My Finds PQ through my DeLorme TOPO software to generate a maps of my smilies! I can then print it or export it to show off the map online. Here is a smaple of my finds on theEast Coast. 2nd pic is a shot of a State Park in New Hampshire that we camped in and all the caches available in the park.
  10. you need to right click on the map and open in a new tab or window. I hate this change too but I can work around it
  11. drop during the found process and then retrieve from the coin page. 2 steps but still a pain. I tagged my Jeep to do this very thing and have only logged it into a couple events so far. Just finished a New England road trip with some very good caches along the way yet I still don't want to go through the hassle of dipping.
  12. or you could just log a SBA with a note to the reviewer asking to disable the cache until the owner does something about repairing it. Not sure a reviewer would appreciate the attitude that was presented by the CO to the original NM. Could create a pi$$ing contest that could get somebody banned if they weren't careful! LOL
  13. It's not just the legs that need protection. Here is a copy of a log placed by a local cache owner in my area who was doing a bit of cache maintenance and had a small run in with a fanged friend. May 8 by Serrabou (1991 found) On a maintenance visit early this morning, I reached down to sweep a few leaves out of the hide spot before replacing the cache. I felt a sharp pain on my palm, so carefully felt around to see what sharp object was there so I could remove it. This time I felt another stinging pain on the side of my thumb. I stood up to have a closer look at my hand, and with horror realized what had happened. These were puncture wounds. Snakebites! I dropped the ammo can, put on my pack, and hightailed it out of there--I was over a half mile from my car as the crow flies. As a safety precaution I had told cphug184 where I was going to be hiking, so jotted him a quick note with my location and planned route, in case I didn't make it out. Drove up 123--reaching over to shift with my left hand, because my right one was getting stiff and hurt a little--and saw a 24 hour emergency center. Turns out they only had two vials of Crofab anti-venom and with the looks of the swelling, now up to my elbow, I need between 6 and 8, so I was transported to the hospital in the back of an ambulance, sirens blaring as we tore down Rte 50. The swelling continued up to my shoulder before the antidote started kicking in. I never saw the snake, but based on the reaction they believe it to be a copperhead, with an outside chance of being a rattlesnake. So here I sit on the tenth floor, being kept for observation until tomorrow. I am disabling the cache for now, lest someone share my fate. I will ascertain the situation once I am fit enough to make the hike again.
  14. Number 1 on the list and absolutely no details given at all??? How many people reading that are asking themselves "what is geocaching?"
  15. I used mygeocachingprofile.com for the map image that I copied to my Photobucket account and then pasted the link into the notes section of the GSAK FindStatGen3 macro so it would show on my profile. I also used the GSAK Delorme macro to keep track of all my finds while doing the Virginia DeLorme Challenge.
  16. don't worry about it. I do it all the time. There are so many tourists around right now that you will blend right in!
  17. perhaps by driving park users away they think they can save on maintenance costs of the park? If nobody come to the park do we really need to cut the grass or groom the trail?
  18. Day use is free in PA State Parks. I think some may charge for use of the swimming pool. Picnicking and hiking is no cost. So, other than perhaps some extra revenue from the refreshment stands, geocaching wouldn't bring in any extra revenue unless the cachers are also campers. Thanks for that info! Perhaps they should have a day use fee. Still doesn't explain why they need to charge $25 to accept a form. How many caches placed will really get an environmental impact study before approval? If they are actually sending somebody out to check the coordinates then I can imagine there could be something better they could be doing with the employees time.
  19. it;s politicians crying poor and threatening punishing the taxpayers for not wanting higher taxes elsewhere. Tim Kane did that by closing rest stops along the interstates here in VA when he was Governor. Supposedly to save $9 million dollars. One of the 1st things the new Governor did when he got into office was reopen them. He didn't want to send signals that the state was closed for business to potential visitors. Of course then somebody got the notion in the state congress to close some State Parks. That didn't fly very well with the general public and that got nixed real quick too.
  20. shooting themselves in the foot I say. Here in Virginia they are actually encouraging caching in the State Parks as a way to bring more PAYING visitors into the parks. They even created a series of their own(with the help of local cachers volunteering to help place the caches) with a multi cache in every State Park across the state. I guess PA just wants the parks to themselves and keep out potential paying customers. Hopefully VA won't change their practices and follow PA's stupid thinking. Let me give you an example you may want to share. Sky Meadows State Park in VA. In the last year we placed 10 new caches in that Park. There are a total of 14 caches within the park. At $25 a cache I am sure those caches would not have been placed. $350 to place caches? No way! Instead we have over 50 finds on our caches. Each visitor must pay $4 a vehicle to enter the park. So our caches have raised an additional $200+ for the Park from luring in cachers to visit the Park. Not to mention gift shop purchases, etc. By the end of the summer I am sure we will have doubled that number. There are geocachers across the state doing similar work in other Parks too. VA State Parks understands the financial impact geocaching can have and are welcoming it with open arms. Perhaps PA should take notice. They seem to be trying to raise revenue by"taxing" cache placement. BTW, We have taken up camping caching for the summer and fall and one of the states we were going to visit WAS Pennsylvania as it is still not too far to drive for us for a long weekend. Now with this news we will be changing our plans and staying right here in the good ol' Commonwealth of Virginia. I encourage all you PA cachers to come on down and enjoy our State Parks and Forests!
  21. maintain your caches like you agreed to when you joined. find about 100 caches before hiding any caches. treat every cache you find like it's something special and not just tupperware in the woods.
  22. we had a local cacher log his 10,000th find at the nearby 10 year event. now that is cool!
  23. link doesn't work for me. Edit: got it to work by opening in a new window
  24. its an Easter Egg. go find that errant cache and win a prize!
