  1. Oregon 600 evaluations After spending several hours setting up everything just right, I think I finally have it all set, and switching between profiles seems to work well enough. Here's my thoughts of problems that I haven't found a solution for: 1) Setup>Appearance>Night Color> No Black. Black is missing. It should be here, but it's just not. Blue is dark enough that it's fine, but it's a small annoyance. 2) Can't EASILY turn on and off tracks. I've searched high and low for an easy way to turn on tracks, usually I don't want them on, but sometimes I do. Don't know. 3) I would like to hold the user button for a screenshot, but I just can't. It's not an option. If Screen Capture were an "app" then it would work, because I can assign the user button and app, but no, that would be too easy. The only way is with the main power button, but I want that for the brightness, so I can't have it on. But then even when it does make a screen shot, I don't know if it was successful, because it doesn't beep or flash or anything. I don't know if it's happened. 4) How do I manually add a Geocache? Sometimes I'll be out of town and have my GPS with me, and I'll use my phone and find that there's a geocache nearby, but I want to use my expensive Garmin to find it. I have the coordinates from the app on my phone, I can manually add a waypoint, give it the right coordinates, even give it the right icon, but it still is not considered a cache by the unit, I can't mark it found or anything. Any suggestions there? 5) On the profile for driving, I have automobile routing turned on, and sometimes the GPS forgets to auto route, it direct routes. I go back into Setup>Routing and Automobile is still selected though. I select it again, and all is fine. Weird though. 6) No speed limit data. I have that shown in the small data fields on the driving profiles, and in the trip computer sometimes, but it's always blank, even while navigating. It's just not there. I do have CNNA-NT though. any thoughts on any of the 6 points would be awesome. Thanks
  2. On the Oregon 4XX series, the brightness when it is plugged in (in the car) is separate from the brightness from the batteries. You can adjust it while it is plugged in, just tap the power button and you'll see the light bulb, and you can increase or decrease the brightness from there, and it will only affect when it is plugged in.
  3. Monkeykat, please please please add my position on the map. If it's not popular, perhaps make it an option that can be turned on/off?
  4. It sounds like I'm thinking about it wrong. I'll try all this tomorrow. I would like more details, as you said... Thanks a ton
  5. I like how responsive it is, but it seems like there is too many options, too many dashboards, too many profiles, too many layers, etc. I'm trying to figure out how to do my usual routine. So, I'm going to cache X. I choose it from the Geocaching menu, and then hit Go. I choose Automobile Routing, because I'm going to be driving there, it's across town. I get close to it, and then want to go to the compass, and have the compass direct routing to it. So I exit out of it, and switch to the compass, but it's not direct routing, the compass is still auto-routing. I want it to direct route. How do I get to do that? The only way I can think of, is to back out of that, Stop Navigation, then choose the GC menu and cache again, but this time choose Direct Routing. This is extremely cumbersome. Is there something that I'm missing? Changing the Dashboard doesn't change the routing activity. What does? (that isn't 10 steps) Help!
  6. That worked brilliantly, thank you so much! I can't believe I didn't think to check that. I thought that a 64 GB card wouldn't format to FAT32, but it would. I had trouble getting it there because of Windows 7, and I'll have to reformat it as ExFAT when I put it back in the GoPro, because some of those files are bigger than 4 GB. (Fat32 only allows for a maximum file size of 4 GB, that was fixed in FatEX) - Thank you so much again! I am so happy now.
  7. I think I may have figured it out accidentally. The card wouldn't format as Fat32 because it's 64 GB, so I'm guessing that the unit can't handle a 64 GB card, I'll have to get a 32 or a 16. Doh!
  8. Interesting. I took the card from my GoPro until I can buy another card. I thought it was formatted as Fat32, turns out it formatted as exFAT. I'll try reformatting it, hopefully that'll make a difference.
  9. Ugh. Brand new Oregon 600, just got it in the mail this afternoon. I've been trying all afternoon, and I just can't get it to acknowledge the maps that I've transferred to it. I am an advanced user, and know what I'm doing. I'm gonna have to call Garmin tomorrow, but I don't look forward to that. Otherwise it's a good unit so far. I've transferred maps to it multiple ways, 1) Manually to the SD card inside /garmin 2) with the Map Install program. Then I should see it in Setup/Map/Configure Maps/____ on or off, but only the base map is listed there. I just can't figure this out! Anyone have any ideas? I don't think I missed anything. Yes, I've updated the software on it. It hasn't frozen or locked up once yet, and I was expecting that. Though when I was transferring one of the maps (with Map Install) it kept installing it over again. When it was finished, it would start again, over and over again until I cancelled it.
  10. I had this unit for years, and I can't say enough good things about it. I think it's the last easy unit Garmin made. I just wish it did paperless, then it would be perfect.
  11. Oh, that's just what I thought I read somewhere, but if it's not, that's no big deal.
  12. I pulled the trigger and ordered the 600, and I'll let you know when it gets here.
  13. I have a friend that says the touchscreen on the 600 is very sensitive, and that she has accidentally reset the unit on more than one occasion. A review of the 600 says that a NiMH battery pack is a option, and that you can recharge it with USB. Now, what about NiMH AA's? Will the USB recharge those? I already have a very good charger, I might want to use that instead. If necessary, can the built in charging circuitry be disabled? Because it is Android-based, can you download apps that use GPS and use them on the unit? On my Oregon 450, I have a rubberized (silicone) case that is actually made for another unit (I think the Montanas) but it fits great. Is there anything like this, or any other case for the Oregon 600? What about screen protectors? <more questions as I think of them> thanks
  14. I too am considering buying an Oregon 600 after owning a 450. Keep us posted on it, What things do you like, and not like?
  15. Well, after all that. I feel stupid, but I learned something. They're just premium member caches, and I learned that the Android client has different icons for those, but the iPhone client does not - didn't know that. (I'm used to the iPhone version, that's what I use 99% of the time)
  16. Then how do Surveyors get centimeter accuracy (or better)?
  17. So, I fired up the Android client on my tablet last night, and was looking at caches near my area, and about 1 out of 100 (of traditionals and puzzles) had a different icon, those odd ones were the regular symbol, inside a 16 point star. I could not find anything these caches have in common, so what does this mean?
  18. While it's being worked on, it would be awesome if there were an icon to show your position, because often it's difficult to know which benchmark you're at, while using the scaredycat site, I've been thinking this for a while.
  19. The car was definitely on. There's no bad fuse, I know this because the port is def getting power. There's a small LED on my lighter port to USB adapter thing. I don't think there's a corrupt file because, he's right, that would keep it from booting on power or battery both, and there's no problem booting, and there WAS a problem with it suddenly turning self off while under power, and fading off under battery, but after replacing batteries, that problem has gone away. That was never the main issue anyhow though. I don't think the USB is damaged, because it is not staying on internal power when the cable is plugged in. I know it is getting external power 2 ways, 1) the screen goes to full brightness and 2) the symbol that shows remaining battery life turns into a symbol of a plug. I usually leave the device on "Spanner" setting, so that it always asks whether to go into computer mode or not when plugging in. Why can't this thing be as simple as my old 60 CSx?
  20. I usually use my Oregon 450 in the car, with a custom mount, (tried a Nuvi, didn't like it) and then I quickly pull it off when I'm caching. The whole system works great. So today, I had it plugged into my workstation, and was transferring caches to it from GSAK, something I did a thousand times before. Worked just fine. Then I brought it into the car, plugged it in, I have a cig lighter port to USB thing to supply the power. Well, the GPS turned itself off, I turned it back on, and it turned itself off again. Hmm. I unplugged it, turned it on with the intent of trying it under just batteries. It slowly faded out, which I know means dead batteries. I replaced the batteries and then powered it on, it came right up, no problem. I went back to the car, plugged it in, it didn't shut off, great. Went on my way. But wait, when it's plugged in, I thought the status of the batteries was irrelevant. I thought the unit automatically switched to external power when plugged in. So why did the empty batteries even matter, why was it shutting off with dead batteries, even though it was plugged in? Hmm. thanks -A
  21. Ugh, I totally could have gone to that. I used to work for the City of Ukiah doing GIS work. I didn't know about this. Oh well, too late now.
  22. Zagg still doesn't make a screen protector cut specifically for the Garmin Oregon 600 series. That's... unfortunate...
  23. I have managed to find out. Yes, you can put PQs on there. Read more about it here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=328919&st=0&gopid=5461180
