I'd be lying if I said I wasn't shocked to hear that one was on eBay (not because I have issues with it, I'm just surprised that somebody was willing to part with one) - congrats on getting one.

I realize this is an old thread/coin but I've received 4 emails about this coin in the last week so it seems that a number of people are finishing up this challenge across the US and looking for a coin so I thought it might be a good idea to address it here. I will not be minting more of these coins. I intended these to be rewards for the first finders of my (and other's) cache and I know many cachers who worked hard very quickly to ensure they could finish it in time to get one of these coins. Minting more now would, in my opinion, take away from those 'trophies'. I understand this decision will likely be popular with current coin holders and very unpopular for those wanting to get one. I'm sorry, but that's the decision that I made a while ago and I am sticking to it. Good, bad or indifferent - there it is. I hope if you don't agree with the decision you can at least understand the reasoning behind it. (And before anybody asks: yes, I've thought about doing a different finish/color to differentiate the series. I realize this could be a good money maker, but that's not what it is, or eve has been, about. Thanks.)

The problem with reservations is also that life gets in the way. People make reservations for coins, the vendor gets a count, makes the coins, invoices the customer and then gets replies like: "I forgot I reserved some of these but spent too much on other coins so I can't pay for them" "I don't want these anymore" or no reply at all. That's why vendors don't do it much. In short, it goes back to what I said back when this thread came up 3 years ago: If you can't afford to pay to have a coin made with your own money - don't make it. Is it a risk to the vendor? Yes. But it's a risk THEY should have to take if they want to make this a business and gain profit from it. the consumer should have to assume no risk. Period.

Sadly this is a pattern that I've seen too many times in the past 7 or so years. I don't post a lot in here anymore as I really lost my passion for coins a while ago as more and more of these situations occurred. I'm not speaking specifically about this vendor, but many people/vendors over the years. What I see is people getting very excited about coins after finding/seeing their first coins, spending WAY too much money in a hurry to buy every coin they can get their hands on, then selling them off a year or so later when they need the money to pay for more important things. I also see people who jump into the selling aspect of coins before they know what they are getting into. It seems like a quick way to make a buck and they don't realize all the work involved. They may make one coin, then stop. And with vendors, it can be even worse. It seems that the community at large is very quick to have a short-term memory when it comes to reputations and past behavior. People get caught up and in a frenzy because they see a coin they just HAVE to have and everything else goes out the window - cost, whether they can afford it or not, the vendor's practices, etc. I've seen too many posts over the years to count along the lines of: "I really shouldn't have spent as much as I did..." "I don't like pre-sales but I had to have this coin..." "I was nervous about buying this but really wanted it..." As with anything, you need to know what you are buying and who you are buying from. Few people would buy from an eBay seller with little to no history and almost nobody would buy from somebody with a bad rating yet people on here don't take the time to do any research on past behavior before plunking money down based on a picture and a promise. Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to lecture....maybe I'm just reminiscing about the days when this wasn't an issue. Or maybe I'm just posting this as a reminder to really think before you buy. Caveat emptor - there's a reason that this saying goes back so far. I'd caution everybody, especially new collectors to really slow down and be wise about what they are doing. </soapbox>

Email coming your way.

No offense taken, don't worry. I took is as opinion and not a personal attack in any way.

This has been an interesting read for me - being the owner of the original Fizzy Challenge. Some good points have been made by all, but like other CO's I won't be making changes to my cache either. Call it what you like, but it's not sadistic on my part - just my desire to keep things the way they are. Like Tequila posted - I don't want to change the playing field (in my mind anyway) in any way that detracts from the accomplishment of previous finders. There are local challenges that I know I'll never qualify for as well - I chalk that up to "just another cache I won't get" and focus on the ones that I can do.

Nice! Save second base!

The geocaching screens are identical IIRC. I don't have my GC right now to do a side-by-side comparison, though. I will try soon. They show when you touch the screen to bring them up. Otherwise, the entire screen is the map/dashboard, etc. I like the fact that the screen is completely used for the map/tracking but you can easily bring this up. The interface isn't terribly intuitive in this regard...But if I were a gambling man, my money would be on Four Dots to get to main menu. Screwdriver/Wrench (the option that looks like it's fallen out of the menu box...) ->settings->power->and then choose from Lithium, Rechargeables, and Alkaline. Will try that tonight. May need to make a shortcut to that one since I use different batteries often.

Magellan eXplorist GC sync with Geocaching account?

No. What you are talking about is real-time wi-fi or some other means of wireless connection. -
Magellan eXplorist GC sync with Geocaching account?
Kealia replied to Snowymoon's topic in GPS technology and devices
This isn't a bug that a Tech Support rep can help you fix or address. It's a feature request that has been shared with Magellan that a lot of us are hoping will be addressed in the next release. I'd like to be able to load MY FINDS (2,000+) and have them show up as smileys on the map in case I need to revisit a previously found cache. I'd also like the ability to turn that file off from showing (like a checkbox) if I don't want to see them at any given point - but I guess it might already be covered by choosing to show UNFOUND. Point is, I hope Magellan updates the software to specifically handle the MY FINDS PQ. -
I didn't see an option to set the battery type like with the GC but I don't think I've seen every screen yet either. I only used a cheap pair of Kirkland AA's and got about 6 hours IIRC. But to be fair, that was playing with the unit the entire time so the backlight was almost always on. Hoping to hear back from them soon with some of my questions, but since I know I got this product VERY early it may take a while. Even with that, I couldn't resist opening a thread to talk about it

I'm actually talking with Magellan about this. As you can see by the screen shot below the pictures are tagged with coords at the right spot - they are the boxes on the trail at different locations. When I first copied the file (GPX) and tried putting the pictures into GpicSync for geo-tagging and sharing it, the location didn't transfer over which is odd because the NAME of picture contains the coords. It's obviously just not doing whatever is needed to write to the EXIF (??) portion of the picture. (I may have that terminology wrong, I'm going from memory). I've shared this feedback and the desire to have the pictures useable in EveryTrail, GoogleEarth, etc. so I don't think this will take long to rectify. You can either use the shortcut I showed above, or you can go to this screen which IIRC mimicks the GC: Finally, this screen allows you to customize shortcuts to 9 buttons (the bottom three in this shot are un-assigned as I've already set some):

I was lucky enough to receive an eXplorist 610 about a week ago and have been playing with in when I can to test it out and provide some user feedback. I wanted to provide a place here to share some thoughts and answer any questions that people may have about the unit. I've used it a couple of times, and most recently on a hike and a few caches in Yosemite so my comments to-date are somewhat minimal, but here goes - (keep in mind that this is prototype hardware and beta software at this point) First off - the screen is bigger than the eXplorist GC because of the lack of buttons (it's a touch screen). The screen isn't overly sensitive, but responds nicely to the touch and is pretty readable in the sun. Much like the GC in those regards. The built in camera ROCKS. Here are a couple of shots that I took with it: (The haze is from a nearby fire, not an issue with the camera clarity) After you take a picture you can save the picture to your tracks, attach it to a waypoing or attach it to a cache. I *assume* the latter will allow you to upload it with your Field Notes to GC but that needs to be confirmed. Marking a waypoint is easy. There's a dedicated button on the side of the unit for that and the screens are simple: From this screen, you touch the coordinates and then can edit them, or you can choose OPTIONS to bring up this screen: TOPO MAPS = NICE! Here's a shot of the topo map in an area of Nisene Marks (State Park near me): And here are a couple of screenshots of the hike I did in Yosemite up to Sentinel Dome: Screenshot of the trip summary: Please post your questions here and I'll do my best to update as frequently as I can (as I'm sure others will who are part of the program). The unit has an electronic compass this time around - I figured that would be asked soon. So far, I love it although there are a few minor (and expected) quirks to be worked out.

You can do whatever you want but since you asked for opinions, I vote "no". You didn't find the cache, you found the location - there is a difference. Justifying it with the distance traveled is like justifying stealing because you really wanted something but couldn't afford it in my book. You either found the cache, or you didn't - circumstances don't change that. What is going on with the cache page is just plain silly, but knowing the history of the CO it's not surprising.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to do something out of spite or anything, I'm just not sure that I see the point of keeping it in the game, ya know?
-
Some remember the very public Tommy Trojan geocide and others may have to look it up - the point is that I found a copy (i.e. laminated sheet with a poker chip attached) of a TT traveler this past weekend while out on a long hike. Knowing that he quit the game 3 years ago and hasn't logged onto the site in 3 years, I'm wondering exactly what I should do with this traveler at this point. On the one hand, I would never knowingly toss somebody's else property, but on the other hand he's no longer participating in this R/A/S/H so what's the point in keeping this moving? He made his feelings very clear when he left and this could now be considered geo-trash that was never collected. As of this writing, I'm not sure what I'm going to do so I would love to hear opinions on this one while I weigh the options.
-
Agreed as well. I set mine free to let them travel and to let people see them. I've had people hold coins for months and log them into every cache they visit which was a bit annoying. I don't mind an occasional dip, but more than just a couple isn't my cup of tea. It will be interesting to see how this increases, if it does, with the new visit option.

Wow. Just saw this on Moun10Bike's FB page. I had no idea and I guess being this far away that's not surprising. Brian was a great guy and one of the first few PNW folks that I had the pleasure of meeting, hiking and trading coins and goodies with way back when. Sad, sad news.

My First Impressions - Magellan Explorist GC
Kealia replied to DorkX2's topic in GPS technology and devices
Can anybody tell me which file in which directory you can edit to do this? -
I haven't seen your collection, but you're likely right. Just my cup of tea, not saying that my collection is any "better" than yours - just different. I wasn't making an issue, just stating one person's opinion? Why is it ok for everybody to jump in with comments like "beautiful coin" or "I love the design" but but not ok for somebody to not like the concept and post accordingly? Which is why my post sounded a bit negative. What this APPEARS to be is another new person who wants to capitalize on coins, has been around for about 3 months with no finds, no hides, etc. Could this be a long timer coiner who now wants to do sales? Maybe, but why hide behind a new moniker? Also, the name itself puts me off "geopromotions" just reeks of commercialism and doesn't feel like somebody that's part of the community - just somebody that's here to make a buck. Now, I could be 100% wrong, but I've been around long enough to see vendors come and go and that's just my own two cents. I don't know the OP, nor am I trying to sink their ship - again, just one guy stating what he sees based upon his own opinions. The OP may be the nicest guy in the world, I'm just not interested in this type of coin. Not trying to be antagonistic, just sharing my thoughts. I really will stop posting here, but did want to respond to the posts directed my way so nobody thought I was posting and running. To GeoPromotions - sorry for the thread hijack. I just meant to state my two cents, I didn't mean to take over your thread. JackalGirl provides good direction and feedback.

Ok, I'll play. My answer: Nothing at all. Won't buy those either. As I said, to each their own.
-
IMO? Because these are GEOCOINS not record coins, NASCAR coins or anything else. That's just my opinion. Some will agree and others won't and will buy the coin. To each their own. Nobody's upset. I won't lose sleep over this, I just see why anybody would mint a coin that has nothing to do with caching and call it a geocoin. That's another thread so I'll leave this alone.
-
Exactly. Pathtags are by definition trackable on their own site. Check with some vendors listed in the pinned threads up top for other options. Some do similar coins (one-side, same size) that are trackable here.
-
Sigh....yet another coin that has nothing to do with caching except a tracking number. Yeah, I'm still around and still feel the same way about coins. I suppose you could argue that you can listen to your favorite 45 before heading out to grab some caches.....but, really? I mentioned the same thing in another thread, seeing as he/she is new but I guess they didn't want to listen. Everything is XXLE for them. Seems like they make around 100 or so and make 20-25 of each and then call it XXLE. From an old thread LE is around 20%, XLE is less than 10% and XXLE well that is even less. For the newer collectors please note that there is no hard and fast rule on this. This was discussed in this forum a long time ago because people were listing so many different versions and calling them LE, XLE, Super-rare-and-only-available-if-you-know-the-password-version, etc. What you're seeing here is a backlash against making a large number of versions and calling them XLE, etc. for the sole purpose of raising prices or enticing collectors to buy multiple versions to have a complete set. Rant done.
