  1. Actually from the Maps view, if you click on the cache, in the info bubble there is an option "Send to Garmin"
  2. Traded my 400t in for another one at REI. They took it back no problem. Only issue was the last 400t they had left was the display. Took the laptop with me and made sure it connected before I took it. Didn't see anything preloaded. Just ran the updater and tit did a firmware update and Chipset M update. Looking at the properties in windows, out of the box, what should the amount of free space be? I'm showing 2.65GB used and 1.07GB free. Seems like it should have more free. In the /garmin/ directory is a file I don't remember on the other one called gmapprom.img that is 2.7GB. Any ideas?
  3. Found the culprit. Post in this very form! I'm a HUGE fan of REI and this just really disappoints me. I thought it was great of them to pull the Magellan Unit to force the mfg to get them right and not sell them to customers till they do. After much debating, I returned the Magellan, some troublesome trekking poles and used my member dividend to get this unit. Thinking I'll bring the laptop with me and test the replacement in the store. Thanks for your help guys!
  4. Thanks! I found that if I search the code of the pocketquery GPX file it points me right to the cache URL. Looks like a team of three cachers were all out caching together, as each cache had entries from the same three guys. (WWCD, donbadabon, and GLM) Guess its another trip to REI tomorrow. Is there a certain serial number range or something I should make sure the replacement has?
  5. any idea how to decipher the visits file? I search on the first code sequence for caches by that code, but nothing comes up.
  6. it gets stranger.... in the root directory there it a file called GEOCACHE_VISITS.TXT In the file is: 17H3E N,2008-03-01T12:35Z,Found it,"" 18TCN N,2008-02-29T12:52Z,Found it,"" 17JQF N,2008-02-29T13:21Z,Found it,"" 193K0 Y,2008-02-29T13:53Z,Found it,"" 193K0 Y,2008-02-29T13:55Z,Found it,"" 17TXP N,2008-03-01T14:14Z,Found it,"" 19862 N,2008-03-01T14:30Z,Found it,"" 18CV1 N,2008-03-01T14:53Z,Found it,"" 18X83 N,2008-03-01T15:18Z,Found it,"" 17R3P N,2008-03-01T15:55Z,Found it,"" 18H78 N,2008-03-01T16:25Z,Found it,"" 17N41 N,2008-03-01T16:53Z,Found it,"" 17QEP N,2008-03-01T18:07Z,Found it,"" 14DKV N,2008-03-01T18:18Z,Found it,"" 17PV7 N,2008-03-01T20:19Z,Found it,"" 1383Z N,2008-03-01T20:19Z,Found it,"" 14CE8 N,2008-03-01T21:08Z,Found it,""
  7. OK... got it to connect and looked in the /Garmin/GPX directory and found a 7+MB file called COLORADO.GPX. In the top of the source code of the file is: <gpx xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" version="1.0" creator="Groundspeak Pocket Query" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0/gpx.xsd http://www.Groundspeak.com/cache/1/0 http://www.Groundspeak.com/cache/1/0/cache.xsd http://www.gsak.net/xmlv1/2 http://www.gsak.net/xmlv1/2/gsak.xsd" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0"> <desc>Geocache file generated by GSAK (HasChildren)</desc> <author>GSAK</author> <email>support@gsak.net</email> <time>2008-02-29T20:51:37.8125000-07:00</time> <keywords>cache, geocache, Groundspeak</keywords> <bounds minlat="38.21545" minlon="-78.02963333" maxlat="39.489233" maxlon="-76.544683"/> Does this mean that I actually got a pre-owned unit? Seems kinda odd that all the caches are in my area.
  8. Interesting. Tried several times to connect and it didn't power itself on. I jiggled the connector to the unit then it went on, then off. Seems if I play with the connection I can get it to just power on, or power on and connect. Then it showed a message, something about "Saving Waypoints to GPX format... 1%" then the screen fades away and off.
  9. Add another new 400t owner to the mix! I finally gave up on my Magellan Triton, returned it to REI and got the right tool for the job. Picked it up yesterday and have only very little time to play with it. Two questions for other 400t folks. 1) Have you figured out if there's a specific order for connecting it to your PC? I've got all the software installed, but have only gotten it to recognize that it was connected once. Do I power it on, then connect? Connect, then power on? Do I need MapSource started first? 2) When I did have it connected I was able to SEND TO GARMIN directly from the GC.COM site a small number of caches. I had it outside for the first time on my drive home and noticed a lot more caches on the map than the 3 I loaded! Did Garmin preload a set or something?
  10. Can anyone tell me where the trail data is stored in VantagePoint? Also, if there's a feature to export the trail data?
  11. I've been contemplating on returning my 300 to REI because of the issues they've been having (and mine is no exception). I like the unit, especially for the price, it can't be beat, but I'd like it to be right. My contact with Magellans support was less than impressive and their promise to get back to me hasn't come through. My thought was to return it and at least lengthen the time in which I can return the second unit while I wait for more firmware updates. Tonight I got on REI.COM to look at the 400 and 500 to see it I might want to trade up while I'm at it. I noticed each and every Triton has been removed from their site. I got on their live support chat to find out what the deal was. Below is part of the transcript from the chat:
  12. Just got off the line with REI support. They have pulled all the Magellan Triton line up from their shelves and their site until Magellan upgrades the software and makes them stable products. They are all being shipped back to the REI warehouse where Magellan is suppose to come out and update everything with new software. Hopefully this move by REI has helped to light a fire under Magellan a** to put in a little overtime in the software programming department.
  13. Very interesting you say this. I was just looking on REI's site for pricing on the other Tritons since I'm going to return mine, perhaps get the next model up. I looked and searched and they are no longer available on their site! This is not a good sign.
  14. I think my plan will be to return the 300 for another one, at least I can extend the return period for another 30 days and wait for another round of updates. I thought about going to the Colorado, but it looks like people are have just as many, if not more issues with those.
  15. I haven't done the firmware update yet, and actually had mine back in the box to be returned. Wonder if I should hold off. I was debating on just returning it for another 300 so at least I could extend my window to return the unit if Magellan doesn't fix these issues. Anyone know if there are similar issues with the 1500/2000 units? Is it worth the sacrifice of the extra bucks to get the higher end unit?
  16. Agreed... being in the web app/software biz bugs are just a know given, but after thorough testing any bugs in a released product can still be there and I can accept that. However it does seem that some of the issues that we've been finding right out of the box are not a good sign. Either the issue (speedo) was known and released anyway or the software was not thoroughly tested. Another minor thing I noticed... I went to attach the belt clip yesterday and for the life of me the screw will NOT thread into the hole. Just add that to the list. As of right now mine is on the bubble of being returned to where I purchased it.
  17. Forgot to add (from the other thread) that its correctly set for miles/feet. I thought the same thing at first. But its been double and triple checked.
  18. I did learned from Magellan Tech Support today that if you hold the Select button, ESC button and power all at the same time for 10 sec it'll do a hard reset. It took me three tries to get all three buttons at once.
  19. I heard rumors that the Triton would allow for paperless caching, but all contact I have had with users of it seem to think otherwise. The Garmin Colorado sounds promising in this area though. I'm keeping my eye on it. Paperless caching on a GPS with U.S.A. based support!! I've tested loading GC info to it, and the Triton will give you paperless caching. You'll get the name, rating, type, description, hint, etc. But you won't get the real time access to find out what's in your area like the phone version does, you have to plan ahead and download them from the site to the GPS. The phone also allows you to log you find right then and there and sync with gc.com later.
  20. Until the issues with my Magellan unit are figured out, I'm currently using the software available for Spint/Nextel phones that is perfect for this. If I'm in an area that I have time to cache, I simply boot it up, as for all the caches around me and I get a list and their distances from my current location. I select one to go after and then can view all the same info that's on the gc.com log page (difficulty/terrain, description, hint, etc) as well as access all the logs. Worth the $6.99/mo to get me started and I might just keep it once I get my GPSr running right. Downside of the phone version is that if I find specific ones I want to go for I can't send them to the phone. That and the phone GPS is iffy. Sometimes I get goo signal and if 'fairly' accurate, other times it drops out after having full signal, takes a while to gain it back. Last weekend it told me GZ was in three different locations. Which is all why I decided to get a dedicated GPSr.
  21. Just picked up the Triton 300 last week. So far I haven't loaded any maps onto it other than what came preinstalled. I've checked through the VantagePoint software that both VP and the Triton's Firmware are both up to date. First Test I booted up the Triton in the car, waited till I got a signal and then proceeded to drive home. At various points in the drive I would check the stats. Speedo was dead on accurate with the car and even responded quickly to any changes, but something looked funny in the miles. When I got home the odometer in the Triton said the trip was 101 miles. The trip is no more than 40. I powered the unit off and decided it needed more looking into. Second Test At the office I hooked the unit up to VP, checked again for any firmware updates and it assured me everything was the latest version. I cleared out any tracks or trails, with the exception of the one Waypoint I created for my office location. I went out, booted the Triton up and let it rest on the dash for at least 30 min for it to get its satellites in order and bearings straight. (Based on other suggestions to let the unit "find itself" and calibrate.) I set everything to zero and drove home. Again, speedo worked perfect, the track seemed to be dead on (despite it not knowing any major highways in the Washington, DC area). Got home and the car read 38.4 miles and the Triton said 112.6. Something it quite wrong. Today.... First call to Tech Support Didn't have to wait on hold for too long, but what ever system they are using to create and retrieve customer service records is awfully slow! I go through the process of creating the customer record. (Interesting side note, I use a PO Box for everything, yet they wouldn't accept it to create a record, they needed a physical address.) I describe the problem and they want me to boot it up and wait for signal. In my office I can't get a single sat connection. They tell me to go outside, boot it up, wait for 10 min and then call them back. Second call to Tech Support I get out to the car start up the unit and I see the "Suspend in 1 sec" screen. Hmmm... I hold the power button and it goes to the "Suspend in 5 sec" screen and counts down. At 3 sec I hit the 'select' button to continue and it shuts down. Boot it back up and its stuck that the 3 sec screen. Several ties and I can't get the unit to boot up, so I call tech support. Once connected to tech support I tell them I'm calling back and they seem to know why, guess the first person at least made a decent record as to the issue. But I tell them there's a second problem that's popped up the we need to fix first. I'm told to press and hold 'select,' 'esc,' and the power button at the same time for 10 sec and then release. (If you have your Triton nearby go try and you'll see this is not an easy task!) I do that and in a couple seconds the Triton boot screen comes up, I keep holding. The Triton boot screen flashes a few more times and then I let go. Once I let go the unit powers down. (This is the Hard Reset procedure.) I'm told to boot up the unit and wait for signal. Everything boots just fine, I wait several minutes for it to get a signal. Tech support assistant seems happy and asks if there's anything else I need. I ask about the odometer issue and how can we fix that. I'm told that the procedure we just did fixed the issue and I'm "to be happy to be using the unit just fine now." Ask to reassure again that the reset fixed the issue with the odometer? "Yes, everything is working fine now." Third Test After hanging up with tech support I wait a few more minutes and the Triton accurately picked up my location at my office Waypoint. Great! I reset the odometers and go to grab lunch around the corner. I get into the parking lot and the odometer on the car reads exactly 1.0 miles. I pick up the Triton and it says the trip is 3.0 miles! Third call to Tech Support "Hello, me again." I tell them what we've done, and the readings I just received. I'm put on hold while she "checks to see what we can do." I wait a minute or two and then she comes back and tells me that my support case has been raised to the "highest level of support and they will be working on the issue." I expect to be transfered but she asks if there's anything else. I say no and ask how will I know if they fix it? Will they call me? Email me? She said they will do both once they address the issue. So, that's where we are at for the moment. I have another test to do where I've uploaded a nearby GC location. Using GPS coords of both it and my office I know that its exactly 0.4 miles between us. I'll go out later and see if the unit agrees when I boot it up. I'll also walk the path and see what I can tell.
  22. I used the same procedure on my 300. I haven't found anything on their support site for downloading new versions. Going to the unit it tells me I'm on: 1.24.0.43 (2007/11/14)
  23. Interesting. I've downloaded a Geocache location near my office to the unit. Punching in the GPS location into google maps of both the cache and my office it tells me that it's 0.4 miles. I'm gonna use this as a test. I'm now in the tech support system at Magellan about this issue. Look for another thread to follow this issue. I'll start a new one in order to document the process and help anyone else that is having the same problem. Edit: I've posted the full rundown here.
  24. That's somewhat good to know. I'll try to download mine and see if the numbers match up. Will be interesting to see if the ratio is the same. Off the top of my head I think it is. However, as far as navigating in the field, it seems to me that it still makes the unit useless until they fix the bug and send out the firmware. And field nav is the main reason I bought it, so in a way I'm kinda upset with Magellan. I didn't make the purchase with the intention of waiting for them to make it work right.
  25. Little update on my issues with the 300. I finally figured out how to get the clock to read right. Had to go into the profiles, select one (hiking in this case), go into the settings and then select my time zone and set daylight savings time. Not sure why this is the location for these data fields instead of the general Settings screen. Not really intuitive. I booted up the device and set it on the dash of the car while I went into the gym. So it had plenty of time to calibrate itself and settle down. I set the trip meter in the car to 0 and made sure to clear any previous trails in the unit and then drove home. Several checks along the way and the speed on the unit was dead on and surprised how quickly it would reflect changes in the rate of speed. However when I got home, the odometer on the car read 38.4 miles and the Magellan said the trip was 112.3. Something is WAAAAYYY off here. Interesting that it would get full signal in the car with lots of glass and metal around, but at 70 mph if would flash a total signal loss when I'd pass under an overpass. It would return to full signal between 1-2 sec.
