  1. Here is my list of little things I enjoy about geocaching. 1. Walking where some interesting story from history occurred. Geocaching is a great way to bring little-known history close. 2. The stillness of places. 3. Finding beauty everywhere along the route to a cache. 4. Letting the place and finding a cache tell its own story. 5. The name Groundspeak. 6. Reading the name and date of the last person to find the cache, thinking of their adventure coming to this place. 7. Signing the log. I was here. 8. Taking a little of the place with me. All good memories.
  2. His family, friends, and his geocaching community have my deepest sympathy and condolences. His memory should always be honored.
  3. My dear wife Theresa named us the Riverview CacheAways because we live in Riverview Florida (a pretty part of Hillsborough County -- near Tampa) and because we always had a bit of that castaway spirit about our time here. She named our geocaches, and in fact, if we had to name anything, she thought of all the names.
  4. I am sorry about your wife's injury. Glad she is OK, but a difficult time for her. I had read this thread shortly after your first post and decided that I would see if I could do my first waymark on September 8 in honor of the day, which I did. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the submission process. It gave me a better appreciation for the work of the Waymarking community. I feel humble next to those who have published thousands of waymarks and those who have reviewed them.
  5. Yes, me too. I like all those places and for the same reasons. Some places do seem to be more than a location. I appreciate the good work by so many people. Waymarking is an excellent resource.
  6. THANK YOU, The_Incredibles, ngrrfan, and TeamRabbitRun. Your advice about devices and filing a plan is great. I try to be careful, but your suggestions make so much sense. I am going to follow it. Thanks again, very much appreciated.
  7. I go solo too, but I have decided that even when I am out in a peaceful Florida nature preserve, I am really not alone. This caching buddy only wanted to block the trail to a cache a couple of weeks ago.
  8. Some places have a sense and character all their own. I enjoy the history of the places I visit. It's like finding a memory.
  9. I am in Florida. I was wondering how Florida compared to the other most populous states. Here are some comparisons, just FYI. Number of Caches as of July 9, 2014: California (129,402) Texas (63,520) Florida (44,009) New York (29,871) Increase in number of caches since 2012: Florida (17.3%) California (16.7%) New York (15.2%) Texas (13.7%) Rank of caches/population (of 120 countries/US states world wide with more than 200 caches): California (52) Texas (66) Florida (69) New York (88) Rank of caches/sqkm (of 120 countries/US states world wide with more than 200 caches): California (25) Florida (27) New York (31) Texas (63)
  10. Thanks for your advice. I think I have read several of your posts about which GPS to buy. And your opinion also seems to be shared by the most people. Anyway I bought a Garmin 62 and expect it to arrive in about 10 days. So, thanks, your clear posts helped me make up my mind. John
  11. Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread. Your posts are full of good insights about the sate of geocaching. Very helpful. John
  12. Dear Car 54, Thank you for the kind words. It was a good feeling to look at all the Geocaching materials we still had on our C drive, all the research and texts about our caches. This website makes it easy to keep track and it seems the Geocaching.com website is an important part of what makes caching enjoyable. Thanks again. John
  13. Thank you. I see you are a husband and wife team from Florida too. We have five grandchildren and two are just old enough to enjoy it. All the people we met while geocaching had interesting stories to share. I suspect that's a part of geocaching that also has not changed. Good luck with your travels. John
  14. Thank you. When we were still relatively new to our area of Hillsborough County (Tampa, Florida) our Geocaching time helped us travel the area seeing places we would never have seen otherwise. We enjoyed the time deciding on the caches to explore and place. John
  15. My dear loving wife Theresa and I began geocaching June 14, 2003. Unfortunately we stopped, it must have been in 2004, but it was not for lack of interest. In the following 10 years, I thought our account would have been deleted. But it was not! I was so pleased. It meant the world to me to visit Geocaching.com tonight to try to find our old cache pages and to discover that our account was still alive. The only geocaching I know is that described in the original post. My wife and I had so much fun on the weekends. We spent just as much time researching what to write about our caches and coming up with a theme and placement and a great name – as we did searching. Theresa always thought of the names. We love Florida history and most had some tie to old Florida. My dear wife passed away in May 2014 at age 56 and the fact that the account we shared is still alive means more than I can express in words. Those great memories all came back tonight as I thought about those days. A husband’s love never fades. So, yes I do remember how it used to be. That is how geocaching will always be for me. It was some of our happiest time together. Lastly, my public thank-you to Geocaching.com. Your keeping our account after all these years is a blessing to this husband who misses his loving geocaching partner. To the newer geocachers, you never know what great memories you are making with each cache. John Riverview, Florida
  16. We are new to geocaching, but we have hidden three caches so far (since June). For two of the caches we gave CD's for the first finders' prize - country music and patriotic music (hidden around the 4th of July). Hiding the caches is a lot of fun. We may enjoy hiding them more than we enjoy finding them!
