  1. It was announced on July 21, 2004 that most of the forest closures have been lifted for most of New Mexico forests. Some restrictions concerning fires remain. For more information, go to www.fs.fed.us/r3/fire/
  2. It was announced today (June 16) there are/will be forest closures and restrictions because of fire danger. The areas closed include most of Cibola and Sante Fe National Forests. Other nation forest and BLM lands are impacted as well. For more information go to: www.fs.fed.us/r3/fire/
  3. I just tried it using EasyGPS version 1.1.9 and had no problems opening the file. Opening the file in a text editor shows the same header as what you see, so I assume EasyGPS (at least my version) ignores the xml item.
  4. If you are a "Premium Member" (aka "Charter Member"), then I believe that a "Pocket Query" will get you what you want. As I remember, to become a "Premium Member" will cost you $30 (US) per year.
  5. I was downloading aerial phots about 400 AM this morning and I didn't have any problems with the download. I haven't tried the delete option, so I can say anything about that issue.
  6. I have both a Vista and a GPS V (it's a long story). I have found I use the GPS V more because: 1. It has noticeably better sensitivity (at least in my experience). 2. Since you can load both TOPO and City Select maps on it at the same time; you can use City Select to route you via roads close to the right area , and then use the TOPO maps for the hike (of course you have to buy both software packs). 3. The weight/size is not that much different - I wear either one on the shoulder strap to my Camelback. I will admit the compass feature of the Vista is nice, but since I always take a compass anyway, that is not that great of an advantage. So if I was only buying one (and had the dollars), I would probably go with the GPS V.
  7. Since by your write up, people can get to the cache not using the service, I say place the cache. However make sure on your cache page you notify people of the possible difficulties (and maybe costs).
  8. It used to be that when you selected "New Since Last Visit" what you got was a Sort by Forums, subsort by topic, subsort by date/time entered. Now it appears we are getting just sorted by date/time entered - No sort by Forums or Forum Topic. I liked the old way better.
  9. Have you tried going to Setup>Units>Heading Display and setting it to degrees? You may also need to set the heading type to "True".
  10. I had a similar problem with Version 2.04. In my cause, when using autorouting, it seemed to lock up every 20-30 miles of distance travelled. When I upgraded to 2.05 it seemed to go away.
  11. The Forest Service just announced that as of midnight Friday, June 28 the Gila National Forest and the part of the Apache/Sitgraves National Forest in New Mexico will be closed. The only exception are a few campgrounds and trails.
  12. I think a better way would be to encourge cache places to indicate in the cache description comments about terrain and distance. The star rating tends to be used subjectively anyway, and if we start adding more and more ratings and sub-ratings it could get too difficult to deal with.
  13. Other While initially I went for easy, close by caches (so I could be sure I would be able to find them), I now try to find caches in places where I haven't been or places that sound interesting. I'm also more interested in some that require at least a short hike rather than one that's on or near a "beaten path".
  14. Most of New Mexixo has both fire and camping restrictions; as of last week you could camp in the Gila National Forest, but could only use campstoves or other "contained" fires - open fires was out. I was hiking in the Gila Forest/ Silver City area about two weeks ago and it was very dry - I'm not sure how long they can keep it open.
  15. For Renegade Knight, I had a similar problem with my Garmin V - I was running TOPO! 2.7.2. However just day before yesterday I visited the TOPO! site and they now have an upgrade to version 2.7.5. I loaded it and now my Garmin V seems to work with TOPO!.
  16. I've put at least 15 hours on mine using version 2.26 with no problems.

  18. Information for Geocachers, or just hikers: Because of the on-going drought in New Mexico, limitations have been placed on a number of New Mexico Forests. These run from "no open camp fires" (Gila National Forest) to total closures (Santa Fe National Forest). These limitations change quite often. You may want to check things out before you depart for your hike. For closure information, you can go to: http://www.publiclands.org/html/home.html Once there, do a "Recreation Search" on "New Mexico", and then click the "News" link on the new window. You can also call the "Fire Restrictions" toll free number at 1-877-864-6985. Or you can logon onto: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/fire Once there click on the "Fire Information" link, then on the "Fire Restrictions and Closures Link" This information also placed in the "General" Forum.

  20. I'm not too hard over either way. The find counts do give me an idea of howI should take the log writeup of a particular cacher. I tend to give more weight to the comments of someone who has more "experience". On the other hand, eventually you learn the character of the cachers from the logs, so you can get a feel that way as well.
  21. I take a kitchen size garbage bag with me when I go out, and unfortuanely I usually can fill it up. I do draw the line at hazardous waste (e.g disposable diapers, toilet paper, etc.)

  23. Having tried both the Garmin Vista and GPS V, I would vote for the GPS V, especially if you want to use it for both hiking and driving, with an emphasis on driving. It's a little pricey and a little larger than the Vista, but I've found it to be more sensitive and easier to mount in a vehicle. Being able to load different types of maps (e.g MapSource City Select and Topo) of the same area is a nice feature. The Vista has the advantage of a built-in magnetic compass, making it easier to zero in on a cache, and being smaller and designed for hiking it's easier to "mount" on your body when you're hiking..
  24. I hate to see things get too complicated, with verifications and reverifications, passwords and so on. More and more "rules" would seem to make the whole idea less inviting. If people want to cheat on finds, then they ought to see a doctor.
