  1. I don't suppose your friend wants to trade? I'm about to buy an analog compass to accompony me on my ventures and if I had a digital compass in my merigold, I'd probably just get the cheapest compass possible as a backup. I should point out that the only time I've ever really needed a compass was when the signal dropped out in some very think brush. I was no longer able to see the sun before the signal wasn't strong enough and even then it was intermitant so I could still get my position and heading every 10 seconds or so. Which brings me to what I think is one of the best features of the Meridian line. The quad helix antenna ownz, hardcore. I routinely leave mine in the console of my car (between the driver and passenger seats) and have no problem keeping a signal with it there. From what I've heard, many people have to leave their GPSr on the dash to keep a signal.
  2. The problem is probably that you are expecting too much accuracy from a consumer grade GPSr. On a good day you can only expect the unit to get you within 30-40 ft of the cache, then you're on your own... Such is the thrill of the hunt. IT Ninja for Hire|High-Tech Adventures
  3. It is probably "averaging" your position when you're just standing still... This means that although the position reading is changing, it's probably becoming more accurate. You should be letting it average for a few minutes before you mark a waypoint for something important important like home or a cache that you are placing. Some people go so far as to average the coords of a cache over a period of several days just to make sure its not off. IT Ninja for Hire|High-Tech Adventures
  4. While walking along the trails of our local "park" I noticed ~5 malt liquor bottles and numerous empty beer cans in one particular spot. I dind't manage to come back for a few weeks, but this time I had a garbage bag. I wrapped it all up, but I was a little disappointed that no one had gotten to the trash before me. On my way out I found a spot that has many empty cans buried under a few centimeters of loose soil (I'm going to come back with gloves for this one). So far I've hauled out maybe 4lbs of glass and cans and I've got another mission to go on. Maybe I should put a couple of caches in the park to get some help with the trash. IT Ninja for Hire
  5. I find that when coords are off it's usually a matter of simply not averaging for long enough. For instance, one of the (few) caches that I find was indicated to be some 40 ft off from the actual position, but when I picked my gps up again after sitting down and filling out the logbook the position was dead on. I'd say if you're letting your unit average for 5 minutes and still finding the cache significantly distant from the posted position, try emailing the cache owner with your corrected coords and suggest they double check. 6. I'm using a MeriGold, planning on getting MapSend Topo pretty soon. IT Ninja for Hire
  7. My MeriGold has started to do this since I upgraded the firmware to 4.02. Also it's been taking longer (Maybe 30-40 seconds instead of 15)to get its first fix of the day and the map screen seems to have some redraw issues when zoomed way in. I reported this to Magellan, but have yet to hear back from them. IT Ninja for Hire
  8. Voted no... Have a couple FRS/GMRS radios. The GMRS only channels run at GMRS power, the FRS only channels run at FRS power. The shared channels you can select which you want to use. I haven't really had a chance to play with them much, but where I have, low power had been enough. IT Ninja for Hire

  11. If you look long and hard enough, you can usually find decent place... We used to play at a long abandoned quarry, but they built a walmart right next to it, so it's a bit too close to public for comfort. Mostly we either use a player's property or play at a sanctioned field. IT Ninja for Hire
  12. As it turns out, she just didn't want me to spend money on an inexpensive model that I wouldn't be happy with. I should be well on my way wednesday or thursday if all goes well. IT Ninja for Hire
  13. Hello All, I'm new to geocaching, so new infact that I expect to get my first GPSr this wednesday. I've been facinated with the devices and this sport for quite some time, I just haven't gotten into it until now. The thing I need to know is... Any advice on telling my gf that I just spent $200 on what is essentially just an expensive toy? Thanks! df
