  1. So would a streetpilot, at least a V you can walk around for more than 2 hours before you burn up the batteries...
  2. I like topo for the airport data, IE showing the field diagrams, as well as actually haveing the airports, this was before I came across the airport/navaid filter to stash up my waypoints.
  3. Topo has a ton more road detail, I used it in my GPS V before, if you are useing the map viewer on the website, make sure you zoom in ALL the way, thier detail setting is weird, and wont show all the roads unless you get in close, like .5 mile zoom.
  4. are you sure about that, I cannot find where I can change the detail to fit more maps into mine...
  5. The 76 does not have cards dude...you basically have 24 mbs free to add mapsource maps only, all of the other goodies, waypoints and tracklogs have nothing to do with the 24 mb storage.
  6. Why on earth would you use course pointer if on foot???, do account for wind drift when walking...LOL Hold on..figure a ten knot cross wind, and a walking pace of 2 knots, means I will need like 30 degrees of crab angle to keep the CDI centered....hahaha
  7. I like my Vista, screen is a bit small, but totally useable, the click stick takes some getting used to, but once there is easy, just use with your left hand as Garmin intended. The CDI is nice, especially for you being a boater, that way you are not "homing" I seem to be blessed with a Vista that works exceptionally well in dense tree cover, I went in not expecting it to work, but maintained a lock the entire time. Also adding waypoints is pretty easy, not quite as easy as with mapsource, but you cannot have everything. I have no regrets for buying mine, then again I was not contemplating the 76S, seems too bulky to fit in a pocket and that screen looks pretty vulnerable.
  8. I'm gonna pull the "I'm new" card and say I have not searched through every back thread from months ago
  9. You Vista owners get the new software(3.20), see above for new specs, pretty impressive, also made some other handy changes.
  10. There should be a symbol with mapsource, tha shows two gpss right next to each other, one of them is for upload, select that, and click "waypoints"
  11. sorry..forgot the link... http://131.238.38.204/~sarangan/aviation/garmin/index.html
  12. Found this, aviation filter, basically filters out what you need, IE: radius from a given reference point, or setup a route, etc, I filtered out all of the airports within 475 miles of home base..good info to have , and used waypoint+ to load 947 waypoints into my Vista in under a minute...ROCK ON, also, make sure you set the prefix letter as you want it, like a K for airports...if you also have it add naviads...makes it less confusing, his help section is pretty good too, before you take the lazy way out and ask in this thread FYI, if you need military airports, make sure you select "private" or "both" for airport selection. I got pretty good at this, so if the help section does not work, I will help you.

  14. quote:Originally posted by GeoPernas:If they bought it from a dealer on eBay, there won't be a problem. The only thing Garmin is trying to stop is someone buying a used or "grey market" unit. Even if he bought it from a private party, if the private party sends the original receipt with it, there won't be a problem either. Personally, I bought mine from Amazon.com. What a killer unit, well worth the full $500 asking price IMO. Ahh ok, well I hope for his sake they send him a reciept...thanks for the explanation. -Tony

Up here in my neck of the woods, anything with a patch antenna doesn't fare real well under heavy tree cover. Vista is a great little unit, but wasn't fitting my needs. "Gimpy" --N2GLS-- Ahhh ok, luckily have not ran into any recieveing issues under tree cover yet, granted florida woods do not get as thick as ya'lls I imagine.
  16. nice nice...why did ya'll sell your Vistas, I love mine...
  17. quote:Originally posted by Mannings:I just bought a Garmin V on EBAY for $430 including tax and shipping. I got it the day after ordering and it comes with a $75 rebate. It is a fabulous unit! Um...pretty sure garmin will NOT honor that rebate from online purchase..it says so on the rebate form, if you figured out a way around this..let us know...haha
  18. the map detail is a ton better, my vista will store all of florida from the topo maps...good stuff
  19. I am a huge Garmin fan, own a GPSV which I have a mount setup in my truck, including aux antanae and power supply for indefinite use, the extra antanae makes a huge difference in sattelite aquisition, and for this new hobby of mine, I use my Etrex Vista, I like the internal compass and the added map memory, usualy keep topo maps in the vista and city select in the GV. As all others, wish the GV had more memory.
  20. I have a GPSV and a Etrex Vista, I prefer the Vista for not having to walk to orient the heading, meaning I am spoiled by the internal compass.
