  1. if you search for a cache and it appears to be hidden without adequate permission, hit the SBA. i've done it, got a little flack and have moved on with no regrets. i count on other cachers to do the same. i should hope that the community polices itself.
  2. they have hiking staff medallions here.
  3. i didn't see the part in the log where it said that the owner showed him where the cache was located. i don't know criminal from adam, but i would be willing to bet money that the smiley was a legit find. go back to your drawer.
  4. by logging some cache that does have gc number multiple times.
  5. i don't think so. i think that's up to each and every cacher to do for themselves. can't legislate good ethics. heck, we can't even agree on them! ETA: probably. and brian's schedule looks pretty acurate too.
  6. well, that could be it. i always feel so much better about caching when i don't visit the forums. however, i feel like the integrity of some uh... methods involved with the game today seem questionable. i'm pretty far removed from the situation down in texas, so it doesn't affect me *directly* yet. i haven't seen a pocket cache here in michigan. i am not aware of people logging temp caches at events here (not to say it doesn't happen, i just hadn't heard of it locally). i appreciate reading the differing points of view here because it makes me evaluate my own caching ethics. i just wish that it had this effect on everyone.
  7. not cool. ETA: thanks for posting the pic, BiT.
  8. nah. snarky is in the merriam-webster online dictionary.
  9. perfect explanation. well done!
  10. i don't think you can move a cache's coordinates more than .1 miles away from the original coordinates. it's NOT the same cache, just the same container in a completely different location. it's still you wanting to manipulate the game.
  11. huh. when i travel, i do a PQ for my destination before i leave then upload everything so i don't need a laptop. yes they are. events are about the people. caches are about searching for a hidden container.
  12. uh oh... sounds like a possible geocide! i took mr. speedy's comment of "You are doing good to maintain your cache, even if it's been archive. There are too many contriversial finds these days" as an olive branch, not butting heads. so my response to the question posed in the original post: after the explanation mr. speedy just provided, i'd let the log stand. seems legit to me.
  13. agreed. absolutely. i agree with both mopar and briansnat on this. follow the guidelines or play the game your way on another website. i am simply amazed at the "creativity" of some of the recent logging practices being discussed. and has anyone noticed that the majority of posters defending pocket caches seem to be from florida?
  14. i've also looked at the Groundspeak shop to see what's available and have been pretty consistently disappointed with their newer items. i never have been able to figure out why they discontinued the nice orange cap. it was nice for visibility while tromping around in the woods and it was the first cap to go...
  15. this is not me, but this is a pic from the gallery of the largest cache i've found. can you spot it?
  16. i just flew to and from germany and brought my gps in my carry on. no problems whatsoever, but i didn't try to turn it on at all. no one even asked me any questions. i flew via continental airlines. i think they recommend that you carry expensive items in your carry on anyway, so there shouldn't be a problem, IMHO.
  17. i was wondering what you would do...
  18. you may find more info from cachers in the michigan geocaching organization forums. there are some maps available at retailers all over the state. this website looks semi-helpful to a non-ATVer like me: Michigan ATV Association
  19. you sure are cranky about this one. if the reviewer says it's okay then this one appears to fit the guidelines. it doesn't provide license to go out and bury caches. let it go.
  20. yep. in fact, the rating system to which pater referred has a link on the cache submission page. look where it says Overall Difficulty Rating (1 is easiest, 5 is hardest. Try this system to rate your cache.) 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 4.5 5 Overall Terrain Rating (1 is easiest, 5 is hardest. Try this system to rate your cache.) 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 4.5 5 but each rating system will still be subjective. just get it as close as you can and remember that standards even vary by region.
  21. it seems obvious to us that the appropriate way to use them is when a cache needs maintenance, not when someone can't find the cache. the cachers who've logged them on your caches, RK, are using them incorrectly, so as relative newbies to the game, i'd assume they don't know any better and i'd send them a polite email. my area has a problem that is quite the opposite: they aren't used when they should be. nary a one on these three that need maintenance in my area: GCM1VY GCNHW GCG644 the thing is... the first two have a cache owner who hasn't logged in since january. the last one, the owner got the emails and knew he needed to perform maintenance anyway.
  22. there's not really a "folder" per se to file waypoints on your gps unit. it lists waypoints under Geocaches if you have assigned the geocache icon to a waypoint. it sounds like gsak is set up right. maybe try checking out page 53 in your manual to make sure that the geocache setup is correct. good luck, the 60c is great!
  23. the best story i've seen is this one. they ended up in the wrong state... heh. the worst i've done, personally, was entering a wrong digit when trying to locate an access road. we knew something wasn't right, but we ended up finding the right road after all was said and done. it threw us off about 20 minutes or so...
  24. a thread discussing this topic was started a few days ago on the MiGO site. Rules, Rules, Rules --- The price of progress? some linkage from that thread: Kent county- http://www.accesskent.com/CultureLeisureAn.../geocaching.htm Ottawa county- http://www.miottawa.org/ParksVI/Parks/plan/appendix.pdf (Appendix K- sorry this is a big PDF file) West Michigan Land Conservacy- http://www.naturenearby.org/news/Geocaching.pdf
