It's your responsibility to make sure you are not someplace illegal, not mine. Boy am I glad Tennessee isn't like that. Here it isn't trespassing unless it's posted. Everyone should check the law in their home state to see which applies to them.
  2. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:If you could send me the dns info again right quick, I could do this from the school. I'm in a planning period. all the info I sent you should still work just change the ftp address to ucgeocachingclub.org. I just needed to change the info on my dns server. It took the update instantly it should work for you now. [This message was edited by runner_one on August 25, 2003 at 12:55 PM.]
  3. Sorry its not working here either My other computer uses the dns from the server so it started working there as soon as I set up the server and it fooled me. It's not working from here at my office though. Did you register with godaddy? According to them ucgeocaching.org is not yet registered.
  4. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:I got the email, and I will get it set up. Not having FP extensions is not a big deal. Do we have someone that might be willing to do the site besides me? I'll do it, I just don't have any intention of running the show. Between three jobs, and scouts I just won't have the time to do the job like it needs to be done. Well the site is up I will be e-mailing you login info tommrrow its too late tonight. for me to set up a new ftp account I screw it up as sleepy as I am. I am in the same boat as you I don't have the time to do it right either. If we cant get anyone else maybe we can share the work. talk later
  5. I am basically a one man IT department for a sleep apnea testing company in Tennessee I do everything from database and website design to telephone service. Basically if it runs on electricity I maintain, install repair or write code for it.
  6. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:Welp, I finally got the domain registered. I opted for http://www.ucgeocaching.org instead of the ucgeocache.org. Hope you don't mind, it just seemed a little more descriptive. Let's get that dns stuff up and running. I don't remember if you said it or not, but can we get FP2k extensions on the server? Sorry I've been out of the loop for a while I have been VERY sick. I had a impacted and infected wisdom tooth cut out and the surgery caused the infection to spread like wild fire after the surgery. That is not fun at all I was laied up with a 103 feaver for a while. but i'm getting back in the loop. the server I have that we can use for free does not support front page extensions, it has ftp access only. But since its free without any adds or popups of any kind I say lets not look a gift horse in the mouth. I will e-mail you the DNS info privately. And as soon as the dns is active I will get you the login info. looking forward to meeting all of you soon.
  7. I agree, you should email the finder. I have done several virtuals and have only gotten one reply e-mail from a cache owner, this made me feel like the owner appreciated my visit. The no replies… well.. at least I did my part. I think as a matter of courtesy if someone goes to the trouble of finding the cache finding the answers e-mailing you and logging the cache the least you could do as a cache owner is send a thank you note.
  8. I agree, I would like to see a rating system but it think it should be anonymous and only display a rating after a certain number of people have posted a rating. For example imdb.com only rates a movie after it has 5 votes and what each rater voted is kept anonymous. Using the same system here would enable you to rate a cache and not have to worry about reprisals for a giving bad rating. Something like this shouldn’t be too hard to implement.
  9. quote:Originally posted by DapperDanMan:Has anybody ever created a cache that plays music when you open it? I was thinking of getting one of those musical greeting cards and somehow hooking it up to an ammo can so it plays music. I found such a cache recently that was hidden inside a small cave. The cache had a motion detecting singing head attached to it shaped like a rock. It was placed on a ledge about eye level a short distance from the entrance. I missed the cache crawling in and on my way back out I stood up to stretch my legs in the cool of the cave when suddenly without warning from behind me Chuck Berry starting singing “That Old Time Rock N Roll” I nearly soiled myself! I am glad no one took a picture of me at the moment that singing started.
  10. Maybe this horse has been beat to death but I’m going to chime in with one last comment. At first I disagreed with GC’s position on this issue but since I have been out more lately I am beginning to agree more and more with Jeremy’s position on this. First off let me say that I have no problems with the concept of a virtual and have logged quite a few my self and couple of them have given me some very interesting information that I would not have known had I not visited the virtual. (Both were tombstones with VERY interesting historical facts and I believe both would qualify as WOW factors.) HOWEVER that being said, most virtuals are not worth the effort to find them. In and around middle TN there are tons of virtuals that with a little thought and effort could have been nice micros or even full sized caches. Instead we have FAR too many virtuals that block placement of good caches nearby. One in particular (I won’t name it) is in an area that has acres of public area suitable for hiding a full sized cache with easy accessibility and moderate traffic flow. But there is a micro on one side and a virtual on the other so this whole area is now completely blocked as a location of a full sized cache. I think if virtuals are going to continue to be maintained on this website they should have their own section like benchmarks and should not block the placement of a regular cache. As far as the site rules being spelled out clearly, I think in general they are. If you have any doubt when placing any non standard cache just ask your local approver and he will let you know beforehand. I asked mine about one I am planning that I knew would sound “Strange” and got a quick and polite answer. This is their site, work with them and they will work with you. Just my $.02 worth.
  11. quote:Originally posted by NeuroNomad:and in many cases ignore private property. Over the weekend I attempted one cache that I was outright told that it was private property and another cache as located so that if I attempted to retrieve I would have had to set on/through someone’s landscape. I am a HUGE advocate of personal property but during my time GeoCaching I look back and realize how many times during GeoCaching that I have had to skirt the line between private and public property. I just thought I would point out something since you live in Tennessee as do I, below is a direct copy and paste from the Tennessee government website concerning trespassing. www.state.tn.us Tennessee Code Annotated : TITLE 39 CRIMINAL OFFENSES 39-14-405. Criminal trespass. (a) A person commits criminal trespass who, knowing the person does not have the owner's effective consent to do so, enters or remains on property, or a portion thereof. Knowledge that the person did not have the owner's effective consent may be inferred where notice against entering or remaining is given by: (1) Personal communication to the person by the owner or by someone with apparent authority to act for the owner; (2) Fencing or other enclosure obviously designed to exclude intruders; or (3) Posting reasonably likely to come to the attention of intruders. ( It is a defense to prosecution under this section that: (1) The property was open to the public when the person entered and remained; (2) The person's conduct did not substantially interfere with the owner's use of the property; and (3) The person immediately left the premises upon request. © For purposes of this section, "enter" means intrusion of the entire body. (d) Criminal trespass is a Class C misdemeanor. Reading section A it is clear that under Tennessee law you are NOT trespassing if the property is open to the public and is not fenced or posted. And reading section B you did not break the law if 1 property was open to the public, 2 you did not substantially interfere with the owner's use of the property and 3 you immediately left the premises upon request. quote:Originally posted by Planet:I wouldn't tresspass and we don't have any caches yet that I've found, that are on private property without permission. If I did find one placed on private property I would walk away, contact the cache hider, ask if it is placed with permission, if not noted so on the cache page, and if I got no response I would bring it to the admins attention. Before you jump to a conclusion and possibly cause a cache placer some unnecessary grief because you thought a cache was illegally placed it would be best to consult the laws of the state in which you live. In Tennessee it is perfectly legal (as long as you don’t interfere with the owner's use of the property)to be on private property WITHOUT permission unless it is posted or fenced or otherwise secured until told to leave by the owner. This may or may not be true for the state you live in. it is best to check the laws of your state. Most states have a website with links to its laws.
  12. quote:Originally posted by krdunn:I put the logos out on my site. Tell me what you think. http://krdunn.50megs.com/UCGeoCaching/geocaching_logos.htm Not bad at all. The only complaint I have is the background texture. The colors are fine though. But if everyone else likes it I won’t complain.
  13. Coming Soon to middle Tennessee a themed series-multicache based on the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Follow the link for more info. Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Cache
  14. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:What do you all think of _ucgeocacheclub.org_ ? I sort of like that one because it tells enough for us locals to remember it. I tried ucgc.org but it was taken. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks That domain is fine with me if nobody has any objections I say register it. When you get ready to register it let me know by private e-mail and I will send you the address of my DNS servers. I have a private Win2k web server that has plenty of room for the website. The server supports Php Perl and MySQL. And it has a mail server.
  15. quote:Originally posted by krdunn:I have made the club profile, but before I make the event I need driving direction to the park. Also of the two coordinates which has the grill so I put the right location in. I believe the The east one has the grill its coordinates are 36°08.600 X 85°15.725. Driving directions are; Get off I-40 at exit 300, go north about .8 mile to commerical ave, turn right ago about .5 mile to the park on the left.
  16. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:Runner, check out http://www.godaddy.com. To register a domain for a year is $8.95 IIRC. I have an account there if you don't want to hassle with it. Lemme know. Cool that will work, my registar is a little more expensive. If you can registar the domeain I can handle everything else including the DNS I have plenty of server room. When we decide on a name I can supply you the DNS numbers for the domain (private e-mail of course) that way it will be a true joint effort. I'm looking forward to seeing the logo that Krdunn is working up.
  17. quote:Originally posted by krdunn:I have been out of town, but I was thinking I can get to the park about 10:00 that Morning. Do we need to start a new profile and call it the TN Upper Cumberland GeoCaching Club? Then make an event. Sounds like a plan to me. I was just about to post a question like Wildhawk when he beat me to it. By the way I have access to several webservers, I can set us up a web page for no cost other than the domain name I will check and see what domain names are avaiable that we can use.
  18. I checked with the Monterey city hall and those shelters are first come first serve only, there are no reservations or fees required. So someone would need to arrive a little early to insure that would have the use of one of them.
  19. Well I went by Whitaker Park in Monterey today, not a bad little park for a small town. It has two pavilions with two tables each. The east one has a nice B,B,Q grill that maybe we could grill some burgers and dogs on. The coordinates for the two pavilions are 36°08.600 X 85° 15.725 for the east one and 36°08.630 X 85° 15.777 for the west one.
  20. I am in the planning stages for a large movie themed multicache I had wanted to place one of the legs at the entrance gate of the local drive in, I thought since the area is completely deserted most of the time it would be an excellent place. The theater is not fenced and there are not any no trespassing signs, however since it is a active business I decided it would be in everyone's best interest to get permission for the hide. I have spoke with the owner on several occasions and thought I would have no problem securing permission. I was in for a surprise as he turned me down flat. His reasoning was two fold. First he was concerned about drawing too many people to the theater while it was closed. Second he was concerned that there would be too many reports of suspicious activity in the area during off hours requiring him or his employees to have to make the drive to check things out. Of course I will acquiesce to his requests and instead use the local abandoned theater downtown that is now owned by the city. My question is; How many of you have been turned down for permission on a cache placement? And, how do you approach people when asking for permission to improve your odds of success?
  21. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:I have a bud that is a LEO up in monterey. I'll check with him. I think there is no reason why we cannot do this in monterey. http://www.tnrdgrnr.com/maxpedition I will be on the road in the Monterey area on saturday I will swing through and have a look and get the coords. and post them here tommrrow afternoon.
  22. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:What do you all think about meeting at Cumberland Mtn State Park in Crossville? I have no problem with the meeting being held in Crossville however according to this quote, quote:Originally posted by Tennessee Geocacher:Remember there is currently a moratorium on placing any new caches ( even a event )in state parks or on state property. we cant post it as and event cache if it's in a state park so some other arrangements must be made if we wish to post it as an event cache, which I think is necessary to get the word out. How about this, does anyone know of a location between Cookeville and Crossville. What about Monterey I believe there is a very nice city park there.
  23. Well the interest seems to be here and the 6th is sounding good for everyone. Who wants to set the location?
  24. quote:Originally posted by Tennessee Geocacher:Remember there is currently a moratorium on placing any new caches ( even a event )in state parks or on state property. I can understand the need for and agree with the moratorium on placing new caches in state parks until the current situation with the state parks service is resolved. However I am surprised that this applies to event caches also as I just attended one in a state park this week. I would like to submit my opinion that event caches are caches in name only and are no more against park rules or the spirit of the moratorium than a family reunion or a church picnic. Can you explain the reasoning behind including event caches in parks a little more? In no way do I want to start some kind of argument, just stating my $.02 worth and asking for a little more clarification. Even so there are many other places that a meeting can be held, Community centers, private or city parks as well as others. Just to throw in a suggestion or two Sparta has a very nice little park with a large pavilion down near the river. I have a micro hid in that park now. Then there is of course Hidden Hollow, which is a private park outside of Cookeville, but there is a small entry fee there. Also McMinnville has a nice city park, don’t know any details on that one. I'm sure there are others in the area. Anybody else want to chime in with a suggestion or two?
