  1. Did you find all the caches and sign all the logs yourself? If so, that (in my opinion) is a great day of power caching. The 3,125 finds in a day claim from your original post is ludicrous.
  2. Well... I logged five finds today, and that seemed like a lot since I only have 23 total. I've been reading a lot about "power caching" over the past two days. Personally, I don't see the purpose. I'd much rather take my time and enjoy where I am at the moment with this activity, rather than rushing to get somewhere else. Again, my personal opinion... it shouldn't count as a "find" unless you physically handle the log yourself and sign it or otherwise "make your mark" yourself. That said, it doesn't matter what I think, because I didn't make the rules for this game.
  3. Hello all! Digging up a 5-year old thread, is this still an issue? I have generated 1-time PQ of caches in my area several times over the past few days. The PQ's generate just fine, they show up on my account under "Your Pocket Queries", but not once have I ever received an email with a GPX file to load onto my GPSr. I thought maybe I was trying to get too many caches, as I started off asking for 1000 (basically everything in like, a 30 mile radius). Last night I backed it off to 500, no email... just now, tried 250 in a 10 mile radius, no email... Up to now it hasn't been a big deal, as I have been manually downloading individual caches into GSAK and then transfering them one at a time into my GPSr. However, doing them one at a time is getting old REAL QUICK. Any thoughts on what might be wrong with PQ's? EDIT <bah> forget it, I figured it out... you MUST check a day in order to receive an email.
  4. LOL!!! <cerberus, please check your messages>
  5. Thanks for all the responses so far, folks. I'll read up on the links, although I think I may have ready most of them already (I'll double-check). The red-jingly was found in our "Unlucky #13" find yesterday, check the log here I put the bell on my son's pack, as he was the one to find the cache. The bears will probably eat me, instead.
  6. Hello all! Over the past few weeks, I've spent as much time (if not more) looking for new potential cache locations as I have been finding caches. My efforts have brought me to many new places on the map, exploring where there are no caches, and finding interesting new hiding spots in my area. As of today, I have one cache ready to deploy. Two more for different locations that I have been working on will be ready within the next 3-4 days. Two questions: 1) How long is the average time for the review and approval process prior to publishing a new cache? 2) Do most owners try to place several new listings at once? Or, should I stagger these three caches so they are published on different dates? Thanks for your input!
  7. If I'm not mistaken, SL means "Signed Log". However, I'm pretty new myself, so I might be mistaken!
  8. I'll most likely look into add-on maps later this week, thanks for the info. With add-on road maps and TOPO maps, will they overlay? Or can I only have one showing at a time?
  9. Thanks for all the info, folks! I took a couple GPX files that I manually downloaded and placed in GSAK and managed to load them individually into my GPSr by right-clicking the file in GSAK and selecting "Send to GPSr now", worked perfectly. I requested a local Pocket Query today, and will work on further customizing files and stuff later... I'm going out to get my first find.
  10. Thanks for the info Pup and Bam If I use the "Send to my GPS" option on a cache page, does is send the entire GPX file directly to my GPSr? Or, do I need to go through a third-party program like GPSBabel or GSAK in order to have that information placed onto my GPSr? I guess that is my main confusion... I assume third party programs are used to avoid having to load GPX files one at a time. (I assume the GPX file contains all the info from the cache page in order to be "paperless"?)
  11. Hello all! I'd like to get a few local caches loaded into my Oregon 650 so I can get my first few finds under my belt tomorrow or Monday. I signed up as a Premium Member today, and I also downloaded the GSAK program. I manually downloaded the GPX files of four local caches onto my computer, and GSAK automatically got the info and organized it. Very nice. Now, how do I get all this stuff onto my GPSr? Do I have to load a Pocket Query onto my GPSr? (Problem is, I really don't really understand pocket queries) Do I transfer data from GSAK to my GPSr? (Not really sure how to use GSAK, either) Or, should I select caches one at a time and use the "Send to my GPS" option on the cache info page? Basically, I want to be sure I load all cache info onto my GPSr as quickly and easily as possible, thanks!
  12. Yah, rather annoying. I assumed that such an expensive GPSr unit would at least come with roads on the map. Right now as a driving map, it's worthless. Two hours later, I still have only basic, basic major roads showing on my GPSr. Attempting to obtain some street map info from OpenStreetMap now.
  13. Thanks for the replies folks! I have the 650 sitting outside now, I'll check it in an hour.
  14. Hello all! My GARMIN Oregon 650 came in yesterday... I installed my screen protector last night, put batteries in it this morning, fired it up, aaaaaand... The STATE highway I live on doesn't even show up as a road on the map?!?!? So, I had read somewhere that I may need to install maps on my GPSr. I assume I need to add a more detailed road map? Do I have to purchase through GARMIN's website? Or is there a recommended free update available anywhere? Same thing with outdoor maps, I see on the GARMIN website I can purchase a Northeast USA 24K TOPO map for like, $100. Is there a recommended site for me to get a quality TOPO map? I found http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ in this thread, is that a recommended place to get maps? (Don't know if I even really NEED a TOPO map, but I'm disgusted that roads aren't showing up on a brand-new GPSr, seems pretty silly that roads aren't included) Thanks in advance for any information you can provide!
  15. Good to know, thank you! My GPSr just came into today, letting my screen shield dry overnight, I'll start messin' with it tomorrow!
  16. Also something to consider, thanks kindly for your input.
  17. Thanks for all the replies folks, the info is much appreciated!!! LOL! That does take it one step further, doesn't it?
  18. Hello all! New to Geocaching, already have a GPSr on order and currently in the planning stages to tackle a few local traditional caches beginning next week! Very excited to start this new hobby with my son, I just have a couple basic questions I have not been able to find answers to on the forum. 1) There are well over 600 traditional "green" map icons in our area. Once a cache is logged as "found" under my account, will the icon change color or give some sort of visual indication on my map that it has been located? If so, will that new icon/info also be uploaded and seen on my GPSr (Garmin 650)? 2) According to the forum rules, geocaching.com accounts should be registered to individuals 13+ (with parent permission). Is there any sort of workaround for this, so that my son can receive credit for "finds" and keep his own records of his adventures until he is 13? (As in, should I register another account and monitor it for him?) Thanks in advance for info or old threads you can link me to about these topics.
