  1. I cache with my two sons, ages 4 & 5 (ages 2 & 3) when we started this adventure. I get so frustrated not because I want the stuff but because I hate for us to find a cache and it is either empty, has something broken in it or I kid you not was stuffed with McDonalds ketchup packets because they are so disappointed. A few times like this and I carry a large backpack so I can stock others caches so other children won't be disappointed then I let the boys pick something out of the backpack or I will somehow swirl it all in so they don't realize that we came up empty. I don't know what the answer is but that is my solution to the problem. I just fill em up as I can.
  2. There is only a $100 more for Oregon 400 (I have gift certificate for LL Bean) but don't know if I need the Oregon 400 or if I can just geocache with the Dakota. I've been using the Etrex for 2 years now but am ready to go paperless.
  3. which one should I buy for paperless caching?
  4. We have had the yellow Garmin Etrex H bought at Wal-Mart last May, the entry level model. I would love to get away from sitting at the computer, typing in zip codes and finding geocaches, printing them out, downloading driving directions to something that basically does everything but hunt for me. And if we could log it as found by using the same device vs. having to come home and log everything in that would be awesome! Does such a GPS exist and if so, what is it? We have been very happy with the dependability of the Extrex H but are ready to upgrade. Thanks for any and all suggestions.
  5. for a regular sized cache? Appreciate any links you can give me. Thanks!
  6. we want to get a dog from a rescue but want a good one that can keep up with us when we geocache, any suggestions greatly welcomed! Most of the shelters don't have a clue what geocaching is when we ask them but we do use it as an opportunity to educate
  7. Has anyone used one of these for a geocache container? Was it waterproof? Saw some in Wal Mart and was thinking about getting one to set out as a geocache. THe one we looked at had a red lid so I would camo it to alter the look but they are clear containers. Did not know if they were any good or not.
  8. Is standard the same as childproof lids? I was going to put everything in a ziplock bag, that would not work? By the way, if you are using the standard prescription pill bottles, be sure to use waterproof paper for your logs, or be prepared to visit the cache every couple of weeks to replace a wet logbook.
  9. I am going to put out a pill bottle as a microcache and was wondering if there is a website where I can find and print out a log sheet for it? Or is there somewhere on this site? I"ve downloaded the microcache tutorial but it wasn't there
  10. Where do I download a copy of the papers that explain geocaching to someone if they find the box accidentally. I see them in all the geocaches we have found so far, usually in a ziplock bag with the logbooks and pens but I'm not sure where to get one from. Thanks!
  11. I was just reading on our local geocaching site about "fake caches" being set up by people to lure women geocachers to the site, now it may be urban legend/rumore (not sure of the term) but what the local folks recommended was making sure that other people logged finding the cache and if there was a high number of people who could not find the cache or you could not find additional info on who posted the cache then it is best to avoid for safety reasons because you could be walking into a trap.
  12. I keep seeing these terms and have no clue what they mean. Thanks! We are hooked on geocaching too by the way!
  13. Okay, have entered all coordinates/waypoints into the Garmin etrex for our trip next week, when we get to the state park what is my next step to start looking for the cache after we get on the trail we are supposed to hike? I mean how do I get the Garmin to start doing whatever it is supposed to do to get me and the 4 kids and the impatient husband who already thinks this is a waste of money to the cache area? Thank you thank you thank you!
  14. There will be an arrow pointing to the cache. If it begins to point behind you, you've gone past it. Also it will tell you how many feet away you are. If the number of feet is increasing, rather than decreasing, you've gone past it. That help? El Diablo Yes!! Thanks so much!!!
  15. It sorta helps, but I know where to get started because each cache is located somewhere along the state park trails so I can physically without electronic assistance get to the trailhead and can hike the whole trail but wondered how I would know if I'm near or if I passed the cache? I guess in other words, how will the GPS "tell" me I've gone too far? I wish they just came with audio "saying you are getting hot" or "you are getting cold". Thanks.
  16. We leave early tomorrow to go on our camping trip. I have programmed the coordinates for the 4 caches in the Garmin as waypoints. Now my question is this, when hiking down the trail, how will I know if we are getting close or not? I wanted to do a test run on a cache near my house but it has not worked out for us to do it so I'm stuck trying to figure this out on the road with an impatient husband and 4 children. Please if anyone can help me, I would be so grateful.
  17. what do you mean mark my current position? I'm sorry but I'm new and don't know what that means.
  18. Hi, I am new to geocaching (I have zero experience have only read about it) , we are camping next week at an Arkansas state park with my 2 boys (2 & 3 years old) and my 9-year old nephew and 12-year old niece. I bought a Garmin at Wal-Mart today and hope I can figure it out and how to use it before we go. I would hate to get the kids excited about it and then be wandering around in the woods. Any suggestions greatly welcomed and thank you for the ideas regarding what to leave. I would imagine the whole treasure hunt appeal will not leave my 4 young charges not leaving the treasures so behind so I wanted to be sure and replace whatever we take. I think what I will do is stop at a store on the way to the park and let the children pick out some items to leave in the caches so they will feel like an even bigger part of the adventure. Thanks again and please any advice/suggestion greatly appreciated!
  19. We are going looking for caches at a state park next week (I've never geocached before) and I read somewhere if you take something you should leave something behind, any suggestions welcomed.
  20. How do I get the coordinates in the eTrex to find a cache?
