  1. I think you're right. It's probably a lot like a watchband pin (wide middle with small ends, spring loaded on one end). That would match the differing hole sizes. I haven't seen a watchband pin that short, but it's worth checking out. I called Garmin and they'll fix it for free since mine is still under warranty (only 2 weeks shy of it running out). However, they can't send me a replacement pin. The person I spoke with said they have to replace the whole outer case!!! Seems a bit odd to me, but my only cost will be for shipping it to them. I'll send it in in a couple of weeks (after vacation) if I can't find a watchband pin to fit. I've temporarily stuck a straightened out staple in there to give a little added support.
  2. There is a small pin of some sort holding the battery door hinge together on the Garmin GPS V. Apparently mine has fallen out. Now all that is holding the door on is the twist lock that the lanyard attaches to. It's functional but not very secure. Has anyone else had this happen? Any idea of how to fix it? Since I never saw the original pin, I'm not sure what a replacement should look like.
  3. It's a matter of opinion, but I personally prefer the GPX Spinner + Plucker combo over the MobiPocket version. Plus, you can run use Watcher to filter the GPX files, then "spin and pluck" the filtered version for storing on the Palm. With the MobiPocket version, you're stuck with whatever your web site query returned.
  4. The GPX has a lot more detail. It inclues the cache description, log entries, etc. Pretty much everything you see on the cache's web site page. EasyGPS doesn't do much with that info, but other tools do. For example, you can use GPX Spinner to turn the GPX file into an HTML format which can be stored on a Palm or PocketPC. No need to carry ount the web site printout any more.
  5. There's also a group based in the Charlotte area - Geocaching Carolinas. You can find them at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/geocachingcarolinas/
  6. This past weekend was my first outing with my GPS V screen covered with the protectors from Strong Engineering. It is adhering well and withstood the hike just fine. Cut down on the glare while driving, too. They're similar to the "WriteRight" PDA protectors you can find in electronics stores, but are a bit smoother (which is fine since you're not writing on the GPS screen). They're also cost a lot less, even after shipping.
  7. Thanks for the responses. I just ordered my GPS V today and am anxious to try it out. (Unfortunately, Amazon bumped their price up $20 yesterday. Still the best deal I could find though.) Olar, I checked out Garmin's mapviewer for City Select and it just shows my area as a big pink blob. No roads. Guess I'll just have to live with it. Saving the tracks as you suggested would make it a bit easier to deal with though. Thanks. Stunod, I'll give the instructions in your link a shot once I'm more comfortable with this thing. Looks interesting.
  8. Hello. I'm new to the sport (just heard about it last weekend!) and am shopping for a GPSr right now. Am considering the Garmin GPS V so that I can use it for driving around as well. My question relates to the MapSource City Select software that comes with it. I live in a recently developed part of a metro area. Most of the streets within about 3 miles of my house didn't exist 2 years ago. I know the software maps tend to be a bit dated, but I was wondering if it were possible to "draw in" additional roads. If so, that would be great as otherwise the GPSr would probably try to route me about 10 miles out of the way to the nearest main road instead of taking the new 1 mile shortcut. If I can't, anyone know how the Garmin V respond if I put my Home marker in a blank area? When following a route, will it beep constantly or try to recalculate until I hit a road it recognizes? Thanks for any info. If the mapping features end up not being much use to me, then I'll probably just go with the Legend.
