I am the guy who spearheaded getting the California Geocoin minted. We used a company called Press Metal (www.pressedmetal.net). They are the company that also minted the U.S.A and Oregon Geocoins. Though there are other companies that can make Geocoins too. Check with the Geocachers who got the Washington State Geocoin minted. It is in color and really looks cool.

I want to go paperless caching. I am a Mac user and I own an G3 iBook running OS X.3. I want to get a PDA that is Mac compatible so I can have the cache pages on it. I likely won't use this PDA for anything else except Geocaching. Since this PDA will only be used for Geocaching, I don't want to spend too much $$$. So what do I need as far as hardware and software to make this happen?

Hey, I want about 5. where do I send the $? Is there an order web site?

Hey, not trying to nag here, but am I going to get a response to my 11/11/04 post? I already email contact@Groundspeak.com about this. They emailed me back saying that I had to have a local approver OK it first. So I emailed two Admins that approve caches here in California. I never heard back from them. So I need decided to post my request here. Can I please get a response?

I went to Catalina last August and did some Geocaching. There are a fair amount of Geocaches on Catalina, but most are hard to get to. Of the 19 caches on Catalina Island, most only can be found by either a boat or a doing 5 Star type hikes. Interior Catalina is very restricted. Golf Carts, the primary means of transportation on Catalina, are NOT allowed out of the city limits of Avalon. You can't rent cars to go outside of Avalon. Tour buses don't usually stop long enough to find any caches. So there are only three caches that are realistic to find (unless you have a boat, scuba gear, or want to do some 5 Star hiking): "Avalon View", "Off Tour in Avalon", and "Anniversary Cache"

I would like to adopt Cache: GC27F3 Vegamaca"" The cache is owned by Xavier and it appears that this cache has ben abandoned. I haved visited this cache two times. Once back in July, 2003 and about a month ago in early Oct., 2004. This cache is located in San Diego's Cuyamaca State Park. All of this park was ravaged by a wildfire back in Oct. 2003. The part was closed for 7 months, but parts of the park started to be reopened this past June (2004) When I revisited this cache site, the only thing that was left of the cache was a rusted out metal coffee can. The lid and all the contents of the cache were burned and destroyed. I took the liberty of replacing the container, putting in a new log book, and adding a bunch of new trade items. I emailed "Xavier" so they could make the updated changes to the cache, but they have yet to respond. I looked at "Xavier" 's profile and it seems they are very inactive in Geocaching. This cacher had 5 months, since the park reopened, to check on and replace this cache. Though, like I said before, thiscache appears to have been adandoned. I am pretty sure Xavier does not live in San Diego. And this cache was approved before the rule of NO vacation/out of town caches. I just placed a new cache Phoenix of the Cuyamacas about .12 miles from this one. So I am able to do maintenance on both caches. I would greatly appreciate it if someone would transfer the cache ownership over to me.

So what is up with the designs? No action this thread since Oct. 22, so I thought I would bump it up.

New York is such a divers state. Obvious places like New York City, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester are very urban, but there are parts of upstate New York that are very rural too. I was thinking of a two different designs for each side. Side 1 would have the New York City skyline in the background with the Status of Liberty in the foreground with Geocacher walking around Liberty Island with a GPS in hand. Side 2 would have an outline of New York State with possibly a picture of Niagara Falls and some mountains that depict the Adirondacks. Again have a picture of a Geocacher (maybe even a family of geocachers) walking across the state. As for words on the Geocoin, obvious one side should say "New York" and the word "Geocaching" with the year printed. I am not sure what the other side should say. I know New York's motto is the "Empire State". It would be nice to come up with some saying that would make this Geocoin unique. Now all I have to do is put this idea into some sort of design (which I have no skill in doing). I am trying to convince the Dillon Gang (the guy who designed the California Geocoin) to work on a design for the New York Geocoin.
-
I think all the ideas being discussed are good. It sound like a nice geocoin is shaping up. As little off topic, but I really liked the picture of all those Geocoins that Team Nazgul posted. I noticed that all those Gecoins are in round protective type cases. Does anyone know where you can get such a thing?

Since you are looking for feedback, do those trees really look Redwoods? They look more like your common Evergreen Tree. Also, as for the man goes, are you really looking for such a rustic looking figure? And finally, I agree with others that there should be some type of Ocean background.

Yes, it would be nice to know at least an approximate delivery date. The last I heard that there were some problems with the minting design. I was the guy who spearheaded getting the California Goecoin minted, so I know all the headache that goes with the process. Though it would be nice to know if we are talking days, weeks, or months to when the Geocoins wiill be shipped out.

I like the art work. What program did you use? Are you going to use Press Metal or another company. The Company that is doing the Washington Geocoin, can't remember the name, might be a good option. As for side two, you could do what the Washington Geocoin is doing with the generic Geocaching lono. Dillon Gang and I are tossing around ideas for the 2005 version of the California Geocoin. I would reallylike to have some color in that version. Anyway, even though I am not a Santa Cruz guy, I would love to order some when they are available.

There we go, gross over generalization of life in New York. Maybe the Geocoin should have a design of a a Geocahing in an urban area giving someone the finger. Though in all seriousness, I would have through that this thread would have generated more interest. Isn't New York the second most populated state? So where are all those New Yorker Geocachers?

Thinking Of Places A New Cache! Any Hints?
Bob&TheGang replied to racingmissy's topic in General geocaching topics
There is a company based on of North Carolina called Bumble Buttons (www.bumblebuttons.com). They make a variety of Geocaching buttons including a First-To-Find Button. They will even make special personalized buttons for a very reasonable price. -
I think it is time that New York had it own Geocoin. I grew up in New York and lived there until I was 24, but I now live in San Diego, CA. for the last 14 years. The Dillon Gang and myself were the ones who designed and got the California Geocoin minted. So I have a fair amount of experience with the whole process. I thought I would start this thread to see what interests there is for a New York Geocoin. Then we would need some input on some design ideas. Once we get some ideas, we can start posting some designs here on this thread. The web link below shows many of the different State and personalized Geocoins minted. www.geocities.com/team_fisur/geocoins/index.html

A movie night sounds like a GREAT idea. I have done a big screen project projector movie night with my kids. It is a lot of fun. How about "Raider's of the Lost Ark"? That seems rather Geocaching related. *********************************************************************** Also, there is my first forum post in almost 4 months. I had been hoping my this time that my warning meter would have gone down, but I am still at 20%. During this time off, I have repended my sins and now I am a new man. You would think that the powers that be would have noticed, but I guess I am marked for life.
-
I do all this work on the California Geocoin and all I am asking is for the Colorado Admin to lower my warning meter by 10%.

Hey Marky, you should have gotten stickers. When I sent the San Jose distribution site Geocoins to Kristine, I included the stickers. Did you get little zip lock bags for each Geocoin? If not, you should have. When I sent the San Jose ordere to Kristine, I just kep the Geocoins in the packing tubes. Kristine had offered to label and bag each Geocoin, so I took her up on her offer.

The shipping is now complete for the California Geocoin. The San Diego Distribution even on Feb 15th was a lot of fun. A bunch of people showed up. I was able to sell 21 extra Geocoins within minutes. I only wished I ordered more Geocoins to sell. In the end, 1125 Geocoins were given out. The Geocoins tracking site at www.calif.goecoins.net seems to be working pretty well. Be sure to log in your Geocoins before you start placing them in caches. Thanks Marky for getting that site up and continuing to work out the little bugs. There may be another 35 or so Geocoins for sale next week. A few of you have already contacted me expressing interest. If the Geocoins are available, they will be $3 each. I am going to limit a max of five Geocoins per person. The shipping will be $4.25 (for U.S. priority mail). If you want to pick them up at my house in San Diego, then their will be no shipping charge. A few people have asked if there will be another order. Well, if we can get people to commit to at least another 250 Geocoins, then if can happen. It may also be a little cheaper the next time around as there won't be a die-cast charge. A few other people have asked if there will be a 2005 version of the California Geocoin. Well the Dillon Gang and I have though about that. We were thinking of Geocoin with some of the natural wonders of California on it (e.g., the brown bear, the Giant Sequoia Trees, Yosemite's Half Dome).

I just got an emai l from Kristine today (2/16). She did get San Jose order just fine. She works at a florist shop and has been putting in a lot of hours due to Valentine's day. Anyway, she says that is all set to hand out the Geocoins and will be contact the peeple who who ordered them today. I was a little worried too, until I got her email today.

Thanks Marky for setting up the site. You did something I was totally clueless at doing. Has anyone from the San Jose area picked up their Geocoins from Kristine yet?

Here is the Information about the San Diego Distribution Site for the California Geocoins: It will be this Sunday Feb. 15th from 1 to 3 pm. Coordinates: N 32 47.667 W 117 07.428. It will be in the "Stadium Market" parking lot. It is just up the hill from Qualcomm Stadium, at the corner of Mission Village Dr. and Shawn Ave. I also plan to have 21 Geocoins available for sale (3 per person) to anyone who wants them. First come first serve. $3 each. I also plan to give anyone who shows up a preview of my "Sierra Memories" cache (that won't be officially posted on G.C. until after Sunday. I will hand out cache information sheets at the distribution site. The cache will be pretty tough to find. As a FTF prize for the first 3 people, I will have free California Geocoin coupons (to be redeemed immediately). If I get real organized, we have have a little food & drink at the distribution site. Anyone is welcome, so pass the word. I hope to see a lot of people there.

Thanks to a big help from Steve from the Dillon Gang, I got the orders mailed to all the people who requested their Geocoins mailed to their home (all 44 of them). The Postal Worker and the people in line behind me were just thrilled. All that is left is mail the few orders for the "non-distribution" sites in L.A. & Eureka. I will get those out tomorrow (Saturday Feb. 14). This this Monday being a holiday, most people should receive their orders by this Tuesday (2/17) or Wednesday (2/18). I also plan to do the San Diego Distribution Site on Sunday Feb. I am not blaming anyone but myself. Also in the end, it probably is not a big deal anyway it works out. I just can't believe the luck. This cache showed up some time last night. Dillon Gang helped me out with the coordinates puzzle to this multi cache. I literally was going resubmit the cache for approval tonight. On another note, thanks to my wife Katrina and Steve from the Dillon, all the Geocoin have been bagged, labels and the addresses made for the envelops. All I have to do now is put the the correct number of Geocoins in each envelop. I have 40 more to go. NOTE: If you ordere 25 or more Geocoins, I am going to ship you the Geocoins in the shipping tubes that were sent to me. I will enclose the little zip lock bags and the web site labels. You will just have to put the Geocoins in the bag your self and then apply the label. The geocoins are protected bettter in the shipping tubes when sending a large amount of Geocoins. Anyway, I am pretty sure I can all the orders mailed out by this Friday and Saturday. It looks like Sacramento Geocacher are the first ones to get their hands on the Geocoins. JeepLife handed out many of the Sacramento Distribution orders last night.

Yeah, that's just 58 feet from the coords on the coin. I guess thefogheads (local cachers in our area) beat Bobkat to placing a cache there. This is going to be a problem. Does anyone know this guy? I just sent him off an email explaining about the Geocoin and the cache site. I even offered a few Geocoins if he could archive or move the cache. I can't believe this happend, I just got the cache that was there "El Centro" transfered over to me. Because I was goin to change the Name and type of cache, it was achieved, so this guy would not have known about it when he was placing his cache. I was going to activate it this weekend. I hope this guy is flexible.
