  1. I am using GSAK. I always just load my PQs into new databases. Ill try updating GSAK but I did look thru the XML file and GSAK appears to be loading all of the items in the PQ.
  2. I have setup a PQ to get 500 caches around my zip that I havent found. This has worked since I joined but today every PQ I try to run only has ~100 results when it is emailed to me. When I click preview it says it will generate 500 results and looking at the Google Maps preview shows the caches I want to go look for are in the result set but not in the zip file. Anyone else have an issue like this?
  3. That's a Golden Orb or Banana Spider as I call em. I recently saw one of these myself while looking for a multi (DNF ). Unfortunately I dont have a camera right now but the one I saw was larger than my hand and I believe it would eat my face. I noticed there are many many more spiders/webs than I remember when I played in the woods as a kid. In someplaces it seems like very 2 ft I hit another web. Must be northern spiders taking a vaction in florida
  4. I used to play a game called Ultima Online. It's an online roleplaying game and it allows you to have a bunch of different characters. I decided to give all my characters the same last name so I came up with Elicate as the last name. It was just random. Now I use it when I cant think of a nickname on websites. It doesnt seem to be used that often so that helps. For instance I use it as my Xbox Live account name too.
  5. If I have it right: Geocoins are actual small coins and Travel Bugs are items that have a "Travel Tag" attached to them. Those items can be anything (toys, clothes whatever the person wanted). If you find a tag or coin that hasnt been activated on the site you can keep it, use it or trade it. If it is activated you should let it travel. I think the whether or not to move it against its goal is debated as in your example you can move it to FL then I (in tampa) could be going to Cali the next day. Getting somewhere isnt always a straight line. I would say its better to move them then let them sit too long.
  6. I recently started myself and I paid for the PM. I realized quickly that I didnt want to print all the time so I joined and grabbed a cheap PDA of craigslist. The PQ are nice since you can filter things out and get up to 500 caches in a single one.
  7. GSAK and Pocket Queries and you are good to go.
  8. I got a zire 31 for $35 from CraigsList with a 256MB card recently. You can probably find a decent deal there or ebay.
  9. I imagine that by the age of 13 your son has already done things far more dangerous than geocaching is. I know I was lucky to survive to that age Just start with low difficulty/terrain and work your way up. Some 1-1s are safer than going to wallyworld
  10. I would say the easiest method would be to use the Google Geo Map http://www.geocaching.com/seek/gmnearest.a...p;zm=6&mt=m Just locate where you are then zoom in. It should populate the map with caches when you zoom in far enough.
  11. Funny you should mention the NDS because I was wondering if anyone had written any homebrew for paperless caching with it? I dont have a PDA but I have a NDS with a M3 Simply card. I figured not many people would think of using their NDS for this purpose, but I think it would be great. I have a 2GB microSD for the M3 Simply and according to wiki the NDS has 4MB of ram. This should be plenty of room for a program to access an XML file and to parse through it. Are there any programs out there for paperless caching and the NDS? If not I will probably see if I can just write it myself. Thanks Elicate
  12. I recently bought my GPSr from Amazon. Though I could save a few bucks off else where, I know Amazon is safe and I have never had any issue with them. That and since I dont have a paypal account setup I didnt want to bother with ebay.
  13. This would totally depend on how interested they were to start with. Even though I recently started, the geocaching concept is not new. I was thinking about doing it a few years ago and have wanted to try is since. So I researched and bought a GPS and was happy to finally go out there and start looking. For me it would have taken lots of DNFs and even then I would have asked for help in my regions forum for a buddy to go with. Now if someone who wasnt really interested (like if I got my wife to try it) it might only take 1 DNF before they give up. Like any hobby you have to put in a little effort to get good at it and some people wont put in a lot of effort to give geocaching a chance.
