  1. MetroGuide does not support routing on the GPSr - only on the computer. Your unit is routing from the basemap. You need tp buy City Navigator 8, or an older version of City Select.

  4. That simply won't happen. The only maps you can load into your unit are Garmin maps.
  5. When this happens, it's time to put away the GPSr, look around and ask yourself, "where would I hide the cache?"
  6. Many answers to common questions about your unit can be found in Sputnik's 60 series FAQ. Lot's of tricks, tips and how-tos that would take months of searching on your own. CLICK HERE
  7. You gotta download, install and use the nRoute program. It's free from Garmin's Web site. CLICK HERE
  8. The games function is a devious and ingenious money-maker for Garmin! You're gonna wear out your buttons a lot faster by playing them!
  9. Nope - you'll get an error message when you turn the unit on - something like "Cannot unlock data" (or something similar to that effect). Gotta get a new unlock code from Garmin...
  10. Yep - there's a limit of 2,025 map segments
  11. Glad to help. The only reason I can see for buying preloaded cards is if the user doesn't have a computer.
  12. *I currently do not have a DVD player in my computer. (Would have to buy DVD. Topo is still CD Rom). Buy a combo DVD ROM/CD burner. They cost about 1/10th of what you spent on your GPSr and sooner or later you're gonna need to get one anyway. They're not that hard to install. *I currently have only the micro card that came w/ 60csx. (Would have to buy a larger card). Buy a larger card - they're cheap too! *I currently don't own ANY of the mentioned software. (Would have to buy the software anyway). No getting around having to buy the software... *Reading from forums: Can't load a gazillion maps anyway. Would slow down GPSr, and limit on maps? Not true. You can buy City Navigator NT and install the whole country on one card. There is no decline in performance. The limit on the number of segments is only an issue if you're just loading Topo maps (and some other less-popular titles like Lights & Waterways). If you load half of the card with City Navigator maps, then memory will be the limiting factor. *I don't think you can pre plan a trip on computer, if the software is on GPSr anyway...right? Yes, you can (IF you have the CD/DVD). MapSource allows you to plot waypoints, create routes along those waypoints and send the routes and waypoints to the GPSr. *Darn those cards are small. Can't see cruising in Zoltig's new Rubicon chasing down RocketMan's 4x4's in Colorado's high country, only to have to rip off the cloves and change back to City NT from Topo? Yep! This would be a problem if you buy the pre-loaded cards. But NOT a problem if you have both titles on CD/DVD and load them yourself. *Unless I am missing the obvious (which is a good chance) I can see advantage of having all of the country on one disk preloaded. Then buying the preloaded Topo's for the area of my choice(s). If you lose your card, you have to buy another one! If you have the CDs, then you just buy another blank card and reload! Bottom line, I think the pre-loaded cards are a rip-off. Again, if something happens to the card, you have to buy another card. You MIGHT be able to copy everything off the card and back it up on CD or another card, but I really don't know if this is an option. Also, if you by the disks, you get the MapSource program which is a powerful management utility for your waypoints, routes and tracks. Using MapSource allows you to store more than one map title to a card allowing you to switch between map types using the GPSr's menu rather than physically changing cards (which IS a major P.I.T.A.).
  13. I'm using very gentle turns of only about 15º of bank when it happens. I've done many steep turns during my practice, hitting nearly 60º of bank one time, and it has never cut out then... I think probably so too.
  14. Well, I wish he'd stop whatever he's doing because it did it again twice today! I think it has something to do with the map screen being displayed. Last time I simply turned the unit on and left it on the satellite page the whole time and it did not shut off at all. Today I selected the map page for display en route but did not use my GPSr to navigate to my house. I guess I'll try hiding various maps (like I was gonna do earlier) next time out.
  15. Only when upgrading to a newer version of the same title. No discount for going from MetroGuide to City Navigator.
  16. Well, son-of-a... GUN! I'm gonna have to agree with y'all! I have a bunch of my POIs that are near my location saved as waypoints and I guess I mistook them as POIs. I would SWEAR that I tested it by scrolling way across the country, but I guess I didn't. Sorry for the false alarm. Editing original post.
  17. You should have 2 unlocks with your City Select, so you can use the 2nd one for your new unit. It should work, but there is a bug in searching for cities in older map versions with firmware version 2.90. Perhaps Garmin was not sending route calculation data with the older maps... I dunno... Click the following link to read thread about that: Serious Bug That Makes The 60csx Useless For Road Nav!, can't enter an address on 2.90 FW!! Pay particularly close attention to Post #43 in that thread! Someone else using older maps just posted a message about another problem they're having, but it's not confirmed if it's a problem because of older version, but I suspect that it is.
  18. While it may be a simple programming change, we have no idea what the ramifications are. Upping the number may degrade performance or cause problems with routing or who knows what... When these units first came out, the limit was just over 1,000. Users complained and Garmin quickly doubled the number. They could've easily quadrupled the number, upped it ten-fold or perhaps even removed the limit altogether. But the limit is there, and I'm sure there's a valid reason for it.
  19. MetroGuide will only do autorouting on the PC. The routing data is stripped when the map data is sent to the GPSr, so the GPSr is only using the basemap to autoroute. The basemap can only route from city-to-city. You can use another program to send your MetroGuide map data to the GPSr and the routing data will get through to the GPSr. "Sendmap" is one such program. "Img2gps" is another. Search the forum for these terms for more info. ...OR you could simply buy the proper maps for your unit (which would be City Navigator v8)
  20. Also the Venture CX, Legend CX and Vista CX. I'm assuming the OP does not have a Cx model
  21. Is that a YELLOW eTrex, or an eTrex Legend, Vista, Venture, Camo? You can only load maps into the Legend and Vista. The Venture, Camo and Yellow will not accept maps. If it is a Legend or Vista, then the only maps you can load are Garmin MapSource maps. You can use TrackMaker to transfer and save tracks, routes and waypoints, but it's useless for your mapping needs.
  22. EDIT: My comments below are erroneous. Please skip the next 4 messages as they deal with my mistaken information. Original post:
  23. Open up in MapSource and save the file as a .GPX by changing the "Save as type" from "MPS Files (*.mps)" to "GPS Exchange Format (*.gpx)"
  24. My experience between the 60C and the 60Cx is that the 60C would often report accuracy better than 10', but it would also often show erroneous positions (usually attributed to poor reception and/or multipath errors). My 60Cx seldom reports accuracy of 10' or better (usually more like about 12' to 14'), but it is consistently better at showing accurate positions on the screen. I think that the Cx is just more conservative in calculating its EPE. ...just my 2¢
