  1. ??? The inch and foot are NOT based on Metric system, and most in the U.S. use STATUTE miles. Only a small minority of us use nautical miles. That said, niether nautical or statute measurements are based on metric system.
  2. Patience and understanding is required of teachers and daycare workers. It is NOT something I afford to a company who first puts out shoddy products and then hides behind the smokescreen of cheap labor outsourced to a foreign country. How can I have understanding for someone I simply can't understand??? It's downright frustrating to pay good money for a product that doesn't work right, and it's infuriating to not be able to communicate with the people they hire to help you solve the problem!
  3. Not only RTFM, but RTFFAQ as well And not only that, but if you've got nothing else better to do, you could also check out Garmin's free MapSource TUTORIAL program.
  4. Did you by any chance save the track from your hike, and then extract this faulty data from the saved track?
  5. Nice gift! My first unit was a B&W Legend, but I was very disappointed with only 8MB of memory, so I bought an eMap and a 128MB memory module. I also liked the fact that it had a jack for an external antenna. I started using it while the Legend stayed on the shelf. I had it for some time before the color GPSMAP models came out, and I got a 60C. I sold the Legend and kept the eMap for backup. I have since bought a 60Cx, but I still have the eMap!!! No problems with it that I can recall (other than the typical line-of-sight reception of models from the era). One thing to keep in mind is that the unit is not IPX-7 waterproof like other handhelds, so don't take it kayaking or swimming. As a matter of fact, keep it out of the rain (a few sprinkles would be okay). It was designed for use in the car - not in the field. Still, it's a solidly-built unit that I was very happy with. That's about it... Enjoy!
  6. Buy the City Navigator maps and install them. Yep, you'll need to unlock 'em - no biggie - it's part of the installation process. You'll need the certificate bearing an 8-digit alpha-numeric "customer code" in your package. Upgrade the MapSource program that comes with the maps - CLICK HERE Download and run Garmin's FREE MapSource tutorial! CLICK HERE Buying used map software is a crap-shoot. You may or may not get the certificate with the customer code with the maps, and IF you get the certificate, the code may have already been used. It's best to just bite the bullet and get new maps designed for your unit.
  7. You sleep on a rock? You should try a bed of straw like the rest of the civilized world.
  8. Glad to hear that even a newbie was able to do it! But I must say that you are no ordinary newbie! You somehow found this thread on your own in less than two weeks! I would shake your hand if I could. Still, while the instructions look like a lot to digest at first glance, much of it is repetitive procedures due to the number of disks involved and the procedures are easy to follow. It's so easy, a caveman could do it!
  9. Most planes fly along airways from point-to-point which results in a bit of a zig-zag route. Here is a typical flight from Cincinnati, OH to Washington, DC (Dulles).
  10. It's not valid for submitting a rebate, but it does give you a legal leg to stand on when the rebate firm denies your claim. When you tell them you have copies of everything, they're gonna back-down on their denial every time. Of course it helps to actually have the copies in your posession in case they ask for them. Glad to hear Garmin came through for you! Somehow I knew they would. I just didn't want to make any promises to you that I personally couldn't keep. Past performance doesn't guarantee future results
  11. True - some allow it - others don't. The information is usually available on the airline's Web site (search for "personal electronic devices" or "portable electronic devices". CLICK HERE to see a list of most major airlines which approve or disapprove of GPS use in flight. Discussed above This is true. Models with barometric altimeters give false altitude information because of the airplane's pressurized cabin. Gotta disagree with you there. If GPS satellites were in geostationary orbit, then this would be true. The system was designed to distribute satellites somewhat equally over the entire globe so that you can get a lock anywhere on the planet.
  12. I use an EXTERNAL ANTENNA with a WINDOW SUCTION MOUNT. I get great reception in the aisle seat!
  13. ALWAYS MAKE A COPY OF EVERYTHING THAT YOU SEND IN FOR REBATE! I was denied a legitimate rebate one time. I contacted them, let them know I was less than happy, and told them I had a copy of everything and they backed-down and processed the rebate. They never asked for any copies of anything. That was a long time ago and I had a phone number to call. I think the scam part is an employee at the rebate center is trying to get over on the system. If they process 1,000 rebate claims, and deny 10 of them, then that's $500 to them. So, a small 1% will be denied, and maybe half of those will follow-up. But if you don't have copies of your rebate materials, then you don't really have a leg to stand on. Good luck to you...
  14. Not knowing what MapSource maps you're working with, my best guess is that some data from the adjacent states overlap into segments of the states you're loading. As a test, on the computer, select a map segment which borders another state, and zoom down close on the borderline and see if some of the pink doesn't bleed over to the adjacent state. As another test, on your GPSr, try searching for a specific address deeper into one of the unwanted states and see if it finds it.
  15. Thanks. I've been documenting my reports to NavTeq in an ongoing effort to show others here how long it takes to get new data into maps (CLICK HERE). I created an account using the same email address that I gave them in my previous reports, and when logging onto my account, I can see the remaining reports that I have sent and not gotten any response. Seeing this assures me that they do have the most recent data that I sent.
  16. I THINK it's a question of when you UNLOCK your maps. If you unlock old maps AFTER the release date of the new version, THEN you're entitled to a free update. The ship date is more like when you'll be able to get your hands on a copy of the software. It has always come out in late summer for the four years that I've been keeping track. That's a long time to go with no maps. There's usually NOT that much more data from one version to the next, and the "new" data is actually anywhere from a year or two old before it gets into the maps (CLICK HERE). I've been running just fine on City Select version 5 since it hit the shelves. I'm gonna break down and update to City Navigator 9 when it comes out.
  17. Check out Sputnik's FAQ on the 60 Series units! It will show you lots of tips, tricks and need-to-knows about your unit! CLICK HERE
  18. City Navigator does autoroute on the GPSr, so it is the one you want for your unit.
  19. Pretty neat, but the first thing that comes to my mind is: How much memory do these things have? You buy a GPSr and you get 4 free downloads. 25 photo credits cost $20.00 and an unlimited annual subscription costs $79.00? It says that the Onix can hold up to 12 maps, but it doesn't say anything about how much area a map covers. They'll have to be a lot more forthcoming with information!
  20. You wouldn't be able to autoroute with Topo if you'd bought the CD either. Topo maps do not support autorouting. Buy the CD/DVD. If the card is lost or damaged, you can just buy a new blank card and reload everything again.
  21. HERE'S THE ANNOUNCEMENT Looks like they fell short of the mark...
  22. So, the problem is apparently with a new card? It works fine with the original card? I'd say take the card back and get a SanDisk brand.
  23. This is true. I've been running just fine on City Select version 5. I will update to City Navigator version 9 this summer.
