  1. Variety is the spice of life. I began the GPSR life hiking/backpacking. Then found Geocaching in a magazine on an airplane. Mounted the device in the car then on the motorcycle. This was a Magellan Map 300 waterproof handheld. It eventually died with parts rattling around inside. It was with me for several good years. Next I moved up to a Garmin Quest. The prime criteria were waterproof, internal batteries, and auto routing. It works well for the motorcycle, car, boat, backpacking/hiking and geocaching. The autorouting is wonderful. Geocaching use is good but not great. I miss the foot by foot readout. Everything is a compromise. I'm ready for phase three but finding a GPSR to do it all gets harder and harder. Too many models.
  2. To add a loop or attach an article I use Velcro strap material that has the loop surface on one side and the hook surface on the other. When you wrap it into a circle it sticks to itself. I usually get it at Lowe's but any building supply center or fabric shop should carry it. It also works well for extension cords and things you need to bundle. I use it for the GPS, clothing, fishing rods, and even a 12 Gauge shotgun in bear country. For the GPS container, I use a SealLine Electronic Case. It is a see-through water-tight case available from Campmor.com and other camping suppliers. It is like a very heavy-duty zip-lock bag with a bright nylon strap and attachment points.
  3. Great idea. May 22/23 are the best dates for me. Location is less important. I can get almost anywhere. The Flatwoods / Bulltown suggestion provides a nice central spot. A recreation area or State Park with camping would be nice.
  4. I spoke with him too. It should be a good promotion of Geocaching.
  5. Thanks for all the work in coordinating the permit system. I had been following the posts but just recently learned the system was in place. Does anyone know if there is a FAX number that the applications could be sent to? The application only mentions a mail address. Thanks again
  6. I can help with North Central WV and Southwest PA. I would expect the biggest opportunity to be in the area of College Students near me that may leave caches behind.
  7. I always consider the possibility of snakes enjoying a good cache site. We saw two Eastern Garter Snakes last week. I wasn't worrying too much until I came upon a guy in hard snake chaps, carrying a long-handled gripper. He was looking for ratttlesnakes to photograph. It caused me double my caution.
  8. I read about Geocaching in the magazine on an airplane flight. I figured it was just for a few big cities, but wrote the geocaching.com address down. Some time later I found the address, did a search, and discovered a cache located a half mile from my house. I had the GPS but I hadn't discovered the hobby until then.
  9. I just placed my first two caches and found the same phenomena. My displacement on the return visit was about 30 feet. I had WAAS accuracy both times and had done a 2 minute average on the first recording of coordinates. I was pretty suprised to find an error. I've been working on averaging and decided that I would begin recording and submitting coordinates when I visit other caches. I hope others will do that for me too so I can see what kind of varance is normal. My GPS is a Magellan Map 330. I'll admit the terrain and tree cover don't help. It's all part of the game.
