Proper way to deal with a cache owner?
woodsters replied to woodsters's topic in General geocaching topics
Thanks renegade. I also forgot to mention that the cache owner stated that the cache was placed by her boyfriends father. So I guess they were supposed to be responsible for the maintaining of it, or it was a puppet account for the cache. If I get near it, I might go and check it out and see if the messages are true or not. I was very surprised to get a response actually. I figured I probably wouldn't. Maybe my email got them to go and do a check on it. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com -
quote:Originally posted by yummykaz: One of their other rules was to pick up your uniform looking trash can by 8PM. We sometimes were bad and did not pick it up till 10 pm. We got a letter from their lawyers...over a trash can.. We also got a letter from them threatening legal action if we did not "seed and water" our lawn. I wrote them back and told them it was my religion to believe that God does that for me. Letters stopped! we know how that feels. We lived in a neighborhood that the builders wife (realtor) tried to tell other people that they couldn't have a window air conditioner in the upstairs bonus room. Just about all the houses had that upstairs room and the central air would not cool it off. We were warned ahead of time and required them to do added things, but it still got hot. They didn't want prospective buyers to ask why others were using window air conditioners in a brand new homes. We had the liberty of buying a home next to the guy who ran the water works and sewage for the city. They ended up being pain in the butts. Not his position, but the use of it. We got along fine until they call the dog pound on us because a dog pen (not anchored or anything) that was not being used was too close to the property line. They had a privacy fence, we had a privacy fence. But come to find out, there wasa city ordinance against have a dog pen within 10 feet of a property line. This ordinance also included horses in the same paragraph. I measured and the pen was 6 ft away. Well actually 6'6". I forgot to mention that the same neighbor erected their privacy fence 6" over on our property, but we did not complain about it. The people behind us had a dog pen built right next to our neighbors fence. Actually the 4th side was the fence. The mayor of the city, happened to be a real estate attorney (the homebuilders attorney at that), but stated he was not aware of the cities set backs. I couldn't understand that. Your a real estate attorney and close deals of houses in that same neighborhood and you don't know the set backs? He closes several a month, plus he's the mayor and the code was on the cities website! Then there was a time we got a notice that was placed inside our mailbox from the city, which was a nono, but postal regulations (that's another story). The notice was that our camper could not be parked in our driveway because they said it extended pass the house closest to the road. I went out and it didn't. I called the codes enforcer and asked him about it. He said no problem if it didn't extend past the house. We had an idea who complained about it, our neighbor. So 2 days later we get a letter from the developer of the neighborhood (not the builder of the homes). Stating that our Recreational Vehicle which was parked in our back yard was agains the HOA rules. Ok, it was a pop up camper that was not popped up and was not in the back yard. It had been there a few days because we had returned from vacation and did not have a chance to empty it out and clean it before placing it back inside the garage, where it is normally stayed. I explained the situation to them. He said that they received a complaint and that they didn't even bother to come by and see the infraction, but took someones complaint as it was. Told us we had so many days to remove it. It stayed there till the very last minute jsut to make the neighbors try to figure out if their complaint went through or not. Our garage was a side entry so we had room on the driveay where it didn't extend past the house. Our neighbors had a pop up as well, but had to keep their in their garage, because they didn't have that added room. Oh well. To each their own. We won't move into a neighborhood like that before. We weren't even aware of hte HOA until after the closing, when the realtor said they would send us the rules. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com

Proper way to deal with a cache owner?
woodsters replied to woodsters's topic in General geocaching topics
Thanks BruceS. I just wasn't sure if that with all the messages of the private property thing on the cache page and then the email that I received back from the owner, whether or not should result in other ways or if there is a protocol for it. Personally, I haven't gone after it and probably won't due to the messages and comments the owner made in the email about not checking on it, but once or twice in over a year and definitely not in the last 8 months. I was just checking to see if I am handling things right or there should be another way of doing it. This also brings up another question. Is it good practice or not necessary for a cache owner to make an entry online when they make checks of the cache? I've seen it done both ways. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com -
Another person started a thread on a subject that about archived cacehs and thought I would ask a question I have here. There is a local cache that hasn't been found in 8 months. It's a relatively low rated cache as it's a 1.5/1.5 I believe. There have been posts made on the cache page from previous finders that it appeared that it was on private property and that they had to cross private property to get to it. Mainly parking in a parking lot of an apartment complex or across the street from it. I've watched it for the last month on the website and noticed no new finders, which is odd somewhat, because caches in this area are pretty much frequently visited and found. I haven't gone to try and find it myself due to the fact, of the comments that others put on the page and no comments on there that the owner has checked on it. Their profile shows no finds with only 1 hidden cache. This one cache was placed out over a year ago. I've emailed the cache owner and asked them about the cache and if it was still there, if they have checked on it and about the private property thing. They responded that they haven't checked in sometime and is behind the townhouses they live in. They said they have only checked it once or twice since it was placed. They never really did answer the part of the private property part, with exception of fact it is behind the townhouses they live in. I responded back to try and get a clearer answer on that part. Should I just let it go and not worry about it? Should someone(not necessarily me) suggest it for archiving? Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com

I've wondered about the poker game thing as people in motorcycle groups (and i'm sure others) do "poker runs". But I wasn't sure how some people will feel about that type of thing. I imagine there are some that will think it's gambling and not approve of it. Or those who think poker doesn't promote something for the family. I can't think of any other ideas of the top of my head, but the others mentioned were good ones. Keep thinking, something will come to mind or someone will post an idea that will work for you. BTW my son would love to find a deck of those cards in a cache somewhere. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com

I wouldn't consider that SPAM. They after all know when they sign up that they may receive email concerning geocaching. If your email was not soliciting for funds, then I wouldn't worry about. From what I read on your message was that it was letting them know about an upcoming even, correct? It was a one time email and there was not a list purchased to just email a general crowd. These people were targeted specifically for this purpose. I wouldn't worry about it. If someone sends you a reply back to take them off your list or gets offended by it, then apologize to them. Those who get so much garbage spam will be happy to see a legite email. Those who don't get very much and are offended by it, then need to consider themselves lucky...lol Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com

I wasn't going to bother even to post, but I will throw my own .02 cents at the chance of getting "sniped" whether one feels I deserve it or not. I agree, attitude does have a lot to do with it. But, on the other hand, so does respect. All that I ask is that respect be given. I can take all the criticism, remarks and whatever you want to give, as I can dish it back out. But, it's not necessary. I do not make it a point to go around and make fun of people, downgrade them, or ridicule them and expect to be treated the same. I will however, become defensive when those things happen. I will agree that there is a lot of geocaching knowledge to learn from the "old timers" here. But I believe there is a positive way of teaching and leading others. One is by example. While I have been the butt of this instance, I have seen it done one others considered "newbies". Someone remarked here that new people are going to continually join the sport and come in here. It's not going to get any easier. Someone mentioned "markwelling". That's a great idea. The forums are here to ask questions, just as it states on the website. It doesn't say to search the forum to make sure your question hasn't been answered before. If that was the case, then there would no longer be a need for the forum as you could make it a FAQ. Just as Briansnat pointed out, people are going to continually join the forum and ask questions, like what's the best GPS? Netiquette. I've been around the internet and forums a lot longer than probably some or maybe many of the old timers. Does it make me any better, no. I do know the unwritten rules of netiquette. But I do know that sometimes things are said in a way that some may think it says something else. But I feel it does not serve as a warrant for accosting. People misunderstand people all the time. I imagine I do. Words can get misinterpreted and do. If you think that there's a chance that you did not understand me or that I perhaps misworded what I was trying to say, then let me know politely. I apologize if I have stepped on your toes. I apologize if you do not agree with me, my opinions, my ideas, or the wording I use. But please do not ridicule me if you disagree with something I say, or other people with only a certain number on their profile or a join date. A lot of people jump out of the arena here because of it. Many won't say anything because of it. I know that I've been personally told by someone that they won't be back on unless it's of importance. That is sadly wrong and they do not deserve to feel that way. Once again, I apolgize for whatever you feel I've done wrong. Making Vacation Caches acceptable
woodsters replied to The Original CoastCachers's topic in General geocaching topics
Everyonme please note that it was agreed along time ago that it is ok to place an out of area cache and that it is ok to place a cache on vacation with the restrictions imposed on the first page of this thread. While many feel that a dead horse has been beaten, please take notice that over half of this thread was due in respect of people not thinking that I understand what can and can't be done. I've posed a question at the beginning, it was answered, not only by Jeremy by other Admin people (apporvers). But since my achknowledgements of the answers people have continuously wanted to bang me for previous questions. They continued to turn what the topic around and make a punching bag out of me for other things. That's fine, I can handle it. All I ask is give me some respect and you will get soem back. When one makes remarks at a person as why don't you do this and such, then you are going to get defensive answers in which you may not like. Take it like you give it and keep it on the topic. I apologize to those who felt they were "violated" with questions that turned to somewhat debate and more. I do not apologize to those who took liberty as to try and downgrade me. To each their own. I will continue to ask questions and give my opinion as I feel fit. If you don't like my question or opinions, then please don't respond. Let it move it's way down the screen and out of site. Simple courtesy towards another is all that is asked. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com -

Making Vacation Caches acceptable
woodsters replied to The Original CoastCachers's topic in General geocaching topics
One additional thing. Thanks for the comment of being a tremendous help in the forums. That is not sarcastic and truly take it to heart. My opinions do not bare any negativity of anyone or anthing to do with the sport. I do believe I do have some great ideas. I'm sure others do as well. But a lot of people will not post or stop posting (as email I have received) due to that they feel they are being harassed, will be harassed or frwon upon by "old timers" that believe in numbers and time as being able to make you informative and credible. Not necessarily you, but in general. Unfortunately for them, I am not one who bows down are backs up. If I believe something I will stand for it. If I don't agree I will let you know. If i'm wrong or least feel i'm wrong or made an error then I will. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com -

You are correct I mistyped there...I meant for it to say virtual, traditional, etc...That Is my error and I accept responsibility for that. You may consider my posting as negative on the guidline. I was making a suggestion. If one disagrees with it, or it doesn't make a difference to them on it, like it the way it is, then it is negative. I don't look at it as negative. I look at it as feedback. Some can tkae it as positive, some take it as negative. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com -

LOL George...unfortunately yes it is damaging it... and it is a circle of life. Your analogy is dead on. I didn't say it doesn't happen, but the initial statement was of "there is the potential to damage more of the surrounding enviornment, which gives the sport a bad name". Thanks for the last words. I don't think the amount of posts means anything in a given time. But that is my informed opinion. Your front page says to ask questions. I ask questions. Do I ask the wrong ones? Half of those 284 posts was defending myself at what you refer to as "cheap shots" and personal attacks. It also includes having to repeat myself as others have failed to read and understnad my point. Someone quotes me, I will respond. Whether it is in disagreement or to say yep. Don't hold it against me if i like to discuss things. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com

Making Vacation Caches acceptable
woodsters replied to The Original CoastCachers's topic in General geocaching topics
Yep you took the whole thing out of context. You have to read the whole gist of the thread. Me saying "What if there was a place, where I could post a message looking for members in the Augusta, Georgia area to take this cache that I want to place there?" was only part of the message. If people read the thread in it's entirety should be able to follow suit. Of course if someone goes directly to the last page or skims across the other threads without reading the whole thing will not understand. More of that message stated: "In other words, I'm going home to Augusta, Georgia in a few weeks for vacation, hopefully. I live over 1000 miles away and it would be absurd for me to own a cache so far away even though I can't maintain it. What if there was a place, where I could post a message looking for members in the Augusta, Georgia area to take this cache that I want to place there? I also stated in that message that the idea was to place a cache (not registered) and turn it over to a user in that area to register it and maintain it as their own. As far as an approver (you) is concerned, I had nothing to do with it. All which brought around the question of out of area caches, which we have agreed that are allowed and there are no rules on other than the normal rules that apply to all caches. I don't feel there was a need to repost the whole context of Jeremy's posting on my part. You had already done it. This thread is not a guideline, if Jeremy stated that it was ok with the conditions he noted (better?, then it needs to be placed on the guidelines page. Should it read that vacation caches are ok? My opinion is that it should say something to the effect of "Vacation caches are not allowed unless...(insert Jeremy's conditions). You're remrk of the exerpt you used against me "they can't maintain a cache that far away" is not referring to anything is it? Does it mean a cache, a B average, a steady job? You have to read the whole context and understand where it is going. Do you understand my viewpoint, or do I need to resum it up all into one post? Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com -
It's not a protest Jeremy. It's a thought or opinion. I could of easily posted a poll as others do. Whether its a recent one like "Is night time caching a good idea" or one of the many others. I asked a question for peoples opinions. If I wanted to protest, I would of emailed you. Just because I don't agree with everything as they are, doesn't mean i'm protesting. Just as because people don't have the same opinion does not mean they are protesting either. I've read the fac on time limits. I stated I agree with what they say on it for now. My question on opinion was directed towards peoples thoughts of future. I have not disagreed with anyone and have thanked them for their opinions, whether I agreed or not. quote:How does walking through a flowerbed damage the environment?!?! (Not to mention _how_ someone would find a cache in the dark w/o a light!) Criminal, that was stated in due about causing damage. A flowerbed is environment. Environment is everything around you. Bushwacking does cause damage to the environment. Yes we damage environment all the time, but the idea is not to cause anymore or the less amount possible. As I stated, to each their own. If they can do it a responsible manner and not cause damage, then do it. It sounds like a great way to challenge. As far as the comment about doing it without a light. That was referring to an artificial light source, such as a flashlight, lantern etc. I imagine there are many people who traverse with just moonlight or perhaps even a streetlight if there is one around. That is getting to the area. Actually hunting the cache when in the immediate area is a different story. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com

Jeremy; Yes I did read the FAQ, but my question was just to here what others thought. What the faq states works just fine for now. My intentions of my opinion is for the future of the sport. Eraseek; There was no implication of trying to start a rule. AS stated above it was a question of others opinion. Just as people ask, what is the best GPS to buy. Everyone has a different opinion. No one is wrong. No one is right. Thanks for your input and opinion. As far as peer pressure, I tend to not agree with that. The fact being that you have some that try to overrun most of the crowd with what you can and can't do. When most of the time it deals with their opinion. Geocaching.com is not their site and they don't have the control over it. Then of course we all respect Jeremy and the time nad energy he has put forth. But you get those who try to influence the "peer pressure' as they are a board nad try to run things. If there is a rule for something, then fine. Follow it as it is published. But don't try to make your own (not you) opinion the rule. Perhaps Jeremy will see peoples opinions, whether mine or yours and use them to the advantage of the site. But your idea does not have to meet a time frmae of being on the site, nor a number on your profile. I would much rather prefer that the number of posts be removed as well as the number of finds. Someone's opinions or thought with larger numbers of either makes no difference in it or their credibility. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com
-
To each their own. Those who do it have to deal with what goes with it. As far as damaging the environment more, I don't know about that. Of course if someone is doing it in complete darkness, without a light, and are walking over a flower bed, then I can see it. But I would imagine there are some places where caching at night would be ok, when done wisely. Some people don't take notice or care for the environment during the day, so I don't think that whether if they do it in the dark or during lightness makes a difference. There are also places (parks ) that are closed during certain days. If a cacher was there in the middle of the day when it's closed, then it would still give a bad name. The words above are my thoughts and do not necessarily represent the thoughts of others. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com
