Why don't you start another thread and give it a name more fitting of the topic matter? I'll bet you won't have anyone accusing you of using SPAM techniques. By not divulging the actual topic initially you are being deceptive -- and that's what SPAMMERS do. ***** You might not like the thread.... No I get plenty of SPAM that states specifically what they are selling...i also get SPAM that says "HI" in the subject. Is that deceptive? NO. If they said hey you want to buy a car and are truing to sell me a house, is that decpetive? Yes. Once again, this is a pet peeve of yours that has been discussed before...go research it... quote:Originally posted by Jomarac5: quote: SPAM technique? Absolutely. How many junk e-mails do you get with a subject line like "Did you know?", or "Are you OK?" -- these are SPAM techniques used to get you to open an e-mail. What you did with the topic of this thread is not any different. It's deception. Plain and simple. I would not have looked at this thread (and subsequently not posted to it) had the topic been "Finding caches along an Interstate route". See how much sense that makes? ***** First look up at what is SPAM and what is illegal. You were stating that the title I used was deceptive? Calling for the techno geeks of the board to ask a question that they would know is deceptive? Get real....Stop looking for a reason to bi***... Thanks Baloo..That was a way on the Markwell site. That is an added benefit of the pocket queries. I'm learning that part more as I go. I figured it had been thought of before and we are leaving at 3am on our trip and just wanted to see if there was a program that would do it on the computer, where I could print out a list of caches along the interstate... And while I'm at, some poor soul who is going to "search" on here about SPAM is going to be referred to this thread now and waste their time. This is one reason that when I have a question that I ask it. I don't want to sit through message after message of people bashing others as well as all the other crap that doesn't associate with it. If you have an answer to the question, then by all means, answer it, markwell it, or post an outside link as Carleen was so nice to do. SPAM technique? "Calling all techno geeks, answer please..." is SPAM? I think you need to read some info on SPAM. Let me help point you the way, since you have not obviously researched SPAM and it was already discussed in another thread last week or the week before. Sorry Jomamarc5, I forgot to put a smilie there for you...it was an ice breaker on the "Did I get your attention?" Please put me on your ignore list if you feel the need. If you feel it has been beaten to death then don't reply. I had a valid question. Astonishing to many, I'm not going to sit here and search through thread after thread, especially when they are full of "this has been beaten to death". I believe everything that is on the forum that DOES relate to geocaching has been discussed before. Please stay on topic with the thread. If you have pet peeves you would like to share, then feel free to start your own thread or better yet, do some reserach as I'm sure they have been talked about before. Did it get your attention? Ok now what I was wondering, is if there is already software out there that will do what I am thinking. What I am thinking is about my trip we are about to go on. Is there some software that will allow you to put in a route, lets say I-95 for example, that will tell you which caches are within a certain distance from it? Like if I wanted to hit caches along the way that were only 2 miles from the interstate. And not from just one point, but along a certain stretch, like New York to Florida or more detailed places. I know I could sit down and do it an old fashioned way, but I didn't know if something would do it already and quickly. If there isn't something like that, do you think it's a good idea? Digital camera recommendations?
woodsters replied to geomaineiacs's topic in General geocaching topics
Even though the geocaching website only allows 100k right now, don't let that be a determining factor. It was mentioned by Jeremy in one of the threads that they are going to be changing that. The upload amount was going to be several MB's. Also you can resize the photo and drop the file size down with many graphic programs. Some cameras come with software that will let you do it and there are free ones on the internet that will let you do it as well. This is, if you think there is a possibility that you will use the camera for other things as well. Edit: I think it all readlly depends on how much you want to spend actually and then go from there. Digital camera recommendations?
woodsters replied to geomaineiacs's topic in General geocaching topics
We have a 4 yr old Kodak DC210 which they don't make anymore. Prices have dropped considerably from 4 yrs ago as have they improved. Ours does a fine job, but the newer ones have better features and some take better pics. My recommendation is to first select a budget. Then look at everyone in that price range. I would go with one that offers the greatest megapixel (resolution) and better warranty. Things can happen to them like any other electronic gadget. I would stick with a well known brand that is know for their quality product as well as quality service. There are also different formats in which store the pictures. There are different type of media cards as well as those that take 3.5" floppies. Ours takes the smartmedia cards. WE have 3 cards: 8MB, 15MB and 16MB. The 2 larger ones can take and hold about 40-50 pics each easily. Not sure of the floppies ability, but seeing that they are only 1.44MB, I would assume a somewhat lesser amount. But I do know that the smartmedia cards boast up to 1,000,000 pics. I don't think you will get that much out of floppies. I know from experience that floppies break down. Of course they are good for storage purposes. Cards cost more, but are not too expensive. Our camera had a cord that connected to the computer, but it took a long time to download the pics. I bought a card reader at Walmart for about 30-40 bucks that reads 2 different cards. It reads the one for the camera and the ones that fit in my sons and wife's MP3 players. You put the card in the reader and it acts like an external drive and is very fast. Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump -
Don't get me wrong...I'm not looking for an excuse to become a paid member. The determing factor doesn't lie upon what I've been asking about. I'm asking because I want to know if being the member has the added benefit. I may one day buy a cable for my Gecko, but right now, my capabilities of when I can cache does not support that for me right now. We are leaving for vacation tomorrow and of course a cable would help me for that. But that is only once and no guarantee of how much I will get to cache. I know of one cache that I'm going after definitely. Thanks Bloen for the info on the EasyGPS thing. That will definitely help in that way. As far as the benefit of looking at the cache pages offline does not help me any. We only have the PC and I can just as easily log on. I only manually enter specific caches before going out after them. It takes a whole 5 minutes at the most to do. So I can not see the benefit there. Like I said, the pocket queries thing is not the determing factor, I just wanted to see how it was going to help me. I also wanted to see what other things you get besides that as well... The only thing that I do not like about it, does not have anything to do with it really except for the "Letterbox Hybrid" caches. I don't look at those type any differently than "Traditional" caches, since I don't letterbox. It may be confusing to some newer people coming in when they see a totally different icon for those caches and may not go after them. I would like to see them in cluded in the traditional count and perhaps on the cache pages, to put a seperate icon stating it is also a letterbox hybrid. Or even put the little icon stamp in the cache container icon signifying the letterbox in it. Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump

How to eliminate Deer ticks in house and car
woodsters replied to Alan2's topic in General geocaching topics
I would also check everywhere the dog normally goes. I wouldn't imagine that you are bringing them in from the car, although that could happen I guess. It's apparent that your dog is probably the carrier or was the carrier. I would check around the house for where he goes. Vacuuming won't necessarily get them either. Have you noticed how hard they are to pull off? They start to dig into something and they won't let go. I've never had to fumigate for ticks. I don't even know if they make something to kill ticks or if they generally do. As Brian stated about the fishbowl, you also don't want any flame sources like pilot lights around either(gas stove - hot water heater - boiler - etc).
