Me disagreeing with you offends you? Me saying that it doesn't sound right or is not the way I would of handled it offends you? I read your email to the parks. The email you posted in which you said you sent does not ask about adverse environmental damage or private land. However in one of the response emails in which you posted, they were talked about these issues as if they were answering questions. While I believe that in the ideal world that a relationshiop between cachers and land managers should be of high importance to better the acceptance of the sport, I do believe that how you ask things are important as to what you are asking. If you are simply seeking policies on geocaching, then ask if they have any policies on geocaching. Stating that there is some controversy or other type of comments that are negative to the sport is the smae thing that my 13 yr old does whne tyring to get something out of me. He loses his battle right then. If indeed those were the actual replies in which you got from the actual email you posted and they just so happened to mention those things out of the blue, then I will offer an "attaboy" to you.

Either the cacehs are being archived from the time the PQ was made and the time you used it. Are you sure they are archived and not disabled? Archived ones should not be showing up in your PQ's (at least I haven't seen any) and i'm not sure about disabled ones. I think disabled ones don't show up either. Just looked at my PQ and disabled don't show up either. I know for a fact because there is a disabled one down the road and it's not showing up in the PQ. I use a pocket pc and the GPxview program. Your results may vary.

Reminds me of when my 13 yr old is going to ask to do something or get something sometimes. He starts off with "I know you're probably going to say no, but..." . He lost his battle right then because it triggers thoughts in my head about I shouldn't allow it already before he even says it. When if he would of said can I do so and so. I might of said ok. The other way he is feeding me an answer to his question already.

Bons do what I did when it happened to me. Post a reply in the forums. It's not looked upon as good forum etiquette, but the person crosses the line when doing that. It happened to me once before here. I posted their email to me and replied to it in pieces. Didn't hear anything else after that...

It will depend on the land manager. Some are just going to be easier to deal with than others. Although the intent of a cache is not to be abandoned, they don't know that and don't have any knowledge of how things would work or when we wil lreturn. If they don't want it there, they will simply say you can not leave property overnight or something to that effect. Actually if there is no rule/law against it and they tell you that you can't do it, without giving a reason, what do you do?

Ditto...that's why I questioned it earlier. The letters seemed to be answering some things and the letter he posted in which he wrote didn't touch on those things.... i.e. private lands, adverse environmental damage, etc...
-
They could, but if they allow anything else to stay overnight that is not specifically allowed, such as a boat, or camping equipment, etc, then they would have to allow caches since there's no specific difference. Camping equipment or a boat would not fall in the same category as long as the owner is there. If someone goes and sets up a tent and then just leaves the tent there and doesn't return, oh I would say in a couple of days, then I would reckon it was abandoned. Same as a boat. If a boat is there for a day or so and there is no one around with it, then they will take recourse and deal with it. Now on the camping thing. If a camper pays a fee and/or has to register, then no it's not abandoned. They are aware of it there and know that the person is registered to be there. There's a big difference in those type of things than with a cache.
-
That would depend. One on the length of time. After a certain period of time, if a car still remains unmoved, then it is considered abandoned and may be towed. Caches could be considered abandoned once you leave a park. Or it's evident that you left it there with intent. Of course it's all going to rely upon the land manager. A land manager could understand and be aware of it and allow it or they could not want to deal with it or get peeved and remove it saying it's abandoned property or littering. They would more than likely use some rule/law that has a wide definition that it could fall under. As far as prosecution. No I don't think they would, unless they have a definite law/rule in place for such things and there had already been a warning put out. No more than a land owner would get you for trespassing if it was not posted. They may wanr you first and then if they catch you again, they may prosecute.

I think that site is http://www.geocachingpolicy.info/

I would ensure that any caches already in the park are up to snuff.. being that there are no dangerous things and that they are serviceable...If they come across an old soggy one, it would not look favorable...also the positioning of the cache may need to be adjusted. They may take offense if it's disturbing some wildlife or something... But yes, the ongoing of avoiding the rule of seeking permission, which I'm not even sure how long that rule has been around, has caused soem problems. It could in fact ruin a lot of great places to place caches. I think in the ideal world, that it would of been better for cachers to educate the parks on the sport and interact with them...once they know what is and become comfortable with it, then things would of been better. A lot of people here the word geo and think geology..They think you are wanting to excevate rocks or dirt or do something with it. It automatically can send out a red flag...

I think if a person that didn't know that they came upon a cache saw either a pvc pipe cash or ammo box, they would still treat them potentially dangerous...
-
I would still use them and give them some cute name to go with them... like The Whiz Cache...or The "Whiz"ard of Oz.... or "Ain't it a pisser"...
-
Your right Bloen it is a tough call...personally I probably wouldn't bother with the permission thing if caches were already there. Actually I would have to think long and hard before putting a cache in the same park as another..I may do it, then again I may decide not to. For the sake of other caches in a given park, I would not bring light to them. Like you stated it could have bad consequences on their caches. I still do believe though that it is better to seek permission. At least in uncached areas. Yes the ban in some federal places may look bad for other places who may wish to follow suit. The fact is that permission was asked from the get go and it makes it more difficult now. Sometimes I feel like we need to change it now, but then again, you never know what the outcome will be. Then again you never know what the outcome will be if you don't.

The other person locally here kind of made theirs long. I would of made it shorter. It's also using 3" pipe I believe. A wider pipe would be best for one the length they used...
-
Those caps are exactly that was on the pvc one around here... I didn't see them in Lowes. There is a Home Depot down the road and I will have to check there. Are they normally in the same area as the rest of pvc pipe stuff?

We ended up with over 100 inches this past winter around here I beleive is what they said. I know we arrived in mass on January 2nd or 3rd and that night it dropped around 6"-12"...then After we found hte house we are renting it snowed 2 times I remember of a foot each and one time of 2 feet. Then there were 6 inches here and there...and some smaller amounts... I understand they had more before the new year so it all added up...We didn't see the bare ground till april...

cold? lol...try up here in Massachusetts. It's warmed upped to 13 degrees right now... We just moved from the Augusta Georgia area to up here almost a year ago in foot or two of snow. Down home, if you get a dusting, everything closes. At least you are using the word ain't...next you will be saying y'all and "fixin to"...I guess it's about summer time down under right?

Saw it last night on the news and it's now in the Boston Globe today. Read about how GPSr's are being used and how it's gonna affect us with the snow. http://www.boston.com/dailynews/339/region...s_plow_d:.shtml

From Australia t oNorth carolina...talk about culture shock... lol

On the test plugs. The one pvc pipe cache that inspired me had one of those, but I did not see them in the same area as the pipe fittings in the Lowes I was at. Should they be in the same area or a different one?

We have this place in town here (smalltown) that is only open from spring to fall. It's a fish and ice cream place. Yeah I know, what a combo, but that seems to be a common thing around here that we have found, besides a donut place on every corner. But one night we decided to drive up for ice cream. I stayed in the car with our little one while my wife, her friend and our son went to the window to order. While sitting there a couple of Harley Davidsons puleld up, with a man and a woman riding them. After they dismounted the bikes you could tell it was kind of a date for them. Well the lady had to go to the bathroom and looked around and didn't see the porta potty on the right side in the back. There was a dark area (was right at 9pm) to the left. She stepped up near the window and grabbed some napkins and proceeded around the corner to the left and told the guy to keep a look out. Well he was being naughty and kept turning around to see if he could see her, oblivious that I was sitting there and watching him, when all of a sudden a car pulls up right in front of him with their headlights on. He got really nervous then because the lights were shining i the area of where the lady was.He didn't know what to do that it was so funny. The lady emerged from the corner as if nothing happened. Went up to the counter to realize that they were not serving anymore food as it just turned 9pm and they were closing. She was "pissed" none the less...

I'm Getting Tired Of All The Whining

My interest would be that it's dedicated to the sport and not just the site here. There are some other sites out there where information could come from. I think it would benefit them as well as gain more subscribers who don't have anything to do with GC.com... They could always do an email newsletter type of thing....
