  1. People do get out of line and there's no argument about that. Why not just say "please be civil and respect each other" and not compare them to others. Just as your daughter that you are teaching/preaching to, wouldn't want to be compared to her sister, posters here don't want to be compared to others. Moderate, don't try to teach/preach/change them as it will result in negative feedback. Moderate them and let them make their decisions. Either they will react like an adult and start acting like one or they won't. You can't change a person. They can only change themselves.
  2. But they are adults (I assume). I don't think that an approach of "this is how you should behave" to an dult is a positive or effective way of trying to get them to do something. Many will take offense to it, as if you are talking down to them. Also I think it's a slap in the face to try and compare them with "ideal" posters on here. That would be like us saying that the moderators could learn a lot from umc's style of moderating. umc moderates pretty well normally and other moderators could learn from that. That doesn't sound too nice to the moderators now does it? Or I should say that some moderators are going to take offense to that. No one likes to be compared to others.
  3. NO! I was hoping that we were out of school and would act like adults. From your previous post, I take it as you are trying to teach, or maybe it's preaching that it is.
  4. Pitiful!!! Ridiculous!!! This topic had taken a turn for the better. I knocked off of work and went shopping. I come home to this disaster. Outrageous! I said in another topic that I thought seneca was one of the best on the forums. His arguments express a differing opinion but he does not have to resort to vulgarity and he expresses rational thought in a dignified manner. Some of you need to learn from that. Some of you need to read my quote as well. If you read it once, read it again. (Edited spelling errors...) Are we in school now?
  5. Maybe not, but it sure seemed that way. Sparky does seem to be following your footprints though. I suppose he will be the next one to host his own forums. Well he may be following suit pretty well in the amount of postings, but has he been as controversial? lol Yeah, he will need his own forums. You noticed that I removed the amount of posts a person makes from being shown directly with the postings, you have to go to their profiles to see it...wonder why I did that? lol
  6. I don't think I had 700 in one month though....maybe 699, but never 700...lol
  7. Holy cow! I knew people said Sparky was prolific, but over 700 posts already...dang! Sparky, you are lucky you came aboard when you did (tension with TPTB) because if you were about 4-5 months earlier you woulda been marked with posting that much...lol
  8. Started back in early June. Not even sure how many i've found. Think it's around 75. The hobby has given me an enjoyable past time. I enjoy going out after the caches. I did enjoy the forums more in the beginning and up till the last month or so. Like others, I look at places while driving and say, "that would be a good place to hide one". I've also become more aware of places to hike, as well as places that don't want you to cache either. With winter and especially the snow hitting here, I haven't gone after a cache in a while. May change in a couple days as we bought a GPS for my son for christmas. shhhhh! it's a surprise. So I imagine we will probably go out after at least one cache here on thursday if not more. If we were still down south, we would continue on caching as the weather wouldn't have such an effect on it. I will also say that I had noticed a slight change in weight when we were caching each weekend. So I guess it does have physical effects as well.
  9. Thanks Seneca. I was going to stay out of this one, but when I first saw this topic my thoughts were that you were the most influential to me as well. I don't agree with you all the time either, but your post are always well though out and have great rationale to back them up. I think it is impossible to narrow it down to just one though, and I would agree with BrianSnat, CarleenP and Criminal (though sometimes I want to throw an admin brick at Criminal! ) What not me Mtn-man? I must of influenced you a little. You kept the title I gave you! (Approver of all trades).
  10. Hey hey now....that was only because the forums were fun then....I don't know what Sparky's problem is...lmao
  11. Doesn't make a difference. As long as either one is a "good" one. Both have potential of being bad or good. They each are valuable in their own ways.
  12. I've found a few of the stones before. The first one I walked by a couple of times ,but realized it was out of place and the color was not right for the area. The others were in the same area of caching and they became easier once I realized that they were listed as micros.
  13. Purely out of curiosity, how many of those caches were placed with permission from the park administration? If the answer is what I expect it will be; how are we to ascertain precisely which of Groundspeak's/geocaching.com's guidelines and/or rules are mandatory, and which are optional, at the user's or website's discretion? I agree...it says use common sense and then uses the word should or shouldn't throughout. It also references them as guidelines only. Admin saying that they can't be there is more concrete and should state as so. Rather than saying you shouldn't put such things in a cache, how about saying it is against Groundspeaks policies to place such items or you may not place such items.?
  14. No, they are minimum security because they lead others to believe they don't have these inclinations. Even minimum security inmates will do wrong. Sometimes it may be bodily harm to a correctional officer or it may be just taking off and theft. No one will ever know. But as a former correctional officer and law enforcement officer, the thing is that as a correctional officer you know that everyone you work with (inmates) are capable and possibly have the intent. Basically you know everyone is a felon. As a law enforcement officer, it's not always the truth. You don't know till something happens. From having inmates out on details and etc, I much prefer that there be one less blade out there that could possibly cut me.
  15. I have a problem with this part. I think cache owners should be expected to check and police their caches rather than a land manager. Land managers do us favors by allowing the caches and working with us. The least we could do, especially when there are concerns from the land manager is to go above and beyond and ensure things are going right with the cache. If land managers thought we felt they should check them, then they might not just allow them...
  16. If you leave a leatherman, Brian, let me know. We'll take it and won't tell on ya.
  17. If it is not necessary to list friends or relatives owho will be checking on the cache for you, then when asked by the approver of "who" will be maintaining it, will it suffice to say "a friend" or "my brother"? Will it be a thing where the approver will want to know their names, phone, or email? If so, does it go in some log? As RK stated, some people have a problem with privacy thing. And as you stated that if we have someone we can call to check on it, then the info wouldn't be nescessary, correct?
  18. Ok...I was just going off what was initially posted at the top. It said you should. It didn't say that you can if you want or it might be a good idea. It says you should (I take that it's needed) as well as says their geocaching name. That's presuming they are a geocacher I guess. So what I gather then is that you don't have to post their name or geocaching name and they don't even have to be a geocacher. Right?
  19. What if the person looking after it for you is not a geocacher?
  20. Here's a message I posted on my site in regards to moderating and moderators. Some of it jives with this. The middle part you can disregard just about as it really doesn't pertain to this.
  21. I have an iPAQ PPC. The way I do it is I go to the gpx file and "copy" it. Then I go to the "mobile device" where the drives are listed at. I go into the mobile device while it's connected to my computer and "paste" the gpx file there. Then it loads it.
  22. Hydee is the other. Ask Sept1c Tank, he has loads of pictures of her... lol
  23. I noticed they didn't post the one I referenced here.
  24. I guess they need a "Girls of Geocaching.com" calendar now... They could make a lot of money...
