I'm sorry, but am i the only one that see's this as putting a big "L" on Jeremy? i was thinking the same thing but didnt want to say it. I said it....why not say it? well when i used the sadam avatar jeremy took ofense to it and i got a 10% warn for it, so i figure if he took ofense to that i might get banned or warned again. Well maybe because you keep posting the picture over and over with the quoting... -

LOL Colonel Mustard..... you never know..... The numbers shouldn't matter, but only to the person they belong too... The most important thing is that you are having fun! -
The last time I hugged a tree, it seemed offended that I was also climbing it. So it scratched me and threw me to the ground! umm....carleen...ummm...someone is going reverse those words around and make some offers to you...and say they would never throw you down and scratch you...lol

What I have has already been mentioned, but I normally just have ziplocks and pens/pencils. I did have a couple of notebooks, but used one for some field notes and the other went to my daughter. I have been thinking about putting the camouflage duct tape in my pack. I have no room for a container in my pack at all unless it would be a micro. One of the things I thought about was how a owner would feel if I replaced their container. But if it's a container that would be damaged, probably some sort of gladware or rubbermaid, I imagine they wouldn't mind. But I do like the idea of duct tape to mend it, till the owner can take care of it on their own. I've also thought about the ideas of how an owner would feel if they used a certain type of log book and someone replaced it with something else? I guess it wouldn't matter either as they could easily replace the one that was put there to replace the previous one...just rambling...

Yes GrizzlyJohn it is al lsubjective. But perhaps an eye opener to some. There are many newer people with higher ratio finds than some of the people who complain about the new people in the forum. And there are some with higher counts who's finds are rated a lot easier than what others have. It's all for sh**s and giggles, but goes to show that it's difficult to judge others and their caching. As wimsey stated it's difficult to come up with an accurate number, because the playing field is not so level and everyone's abilities are different. -

I agree somewhat. But the higher number of finds you have the more apt you are to have higher levels of finds as well. Of course if you are in the middle of montana, then one could say there aren't very many caches around. If you are in downtown NYC, the terrain levels may be on the lower side, but the difficulty levels probably could be higher. -

What do you do with your cache trade items?
woodsters replied to hydrashok407's topic in General geocaching topics
If there is anything worthwhile to trade for, then I usually take something for my youngest child (2 yrs old). Otherwise I take nothing and leave nothing, or take nothing and leave something. It varies.... -

Didn't say you had to worry about it...it's just info that I found interesting, if you don't oh well.... -
I have read topics where people are complaining about others and with the ever famous quotes of "get out and cache". Sometimes these people don't have as many finds themselves as the ones they are talking about or at least their find lists displays what some others would call "padding the numbers". There's also the ratio thing that comes into play. You can have a person that has been around for 2 years (730 days) with only 100 finds. That would average out to not even .14 caches a day. Where as someone that has been around for a month (30 days) has 15 finds, then their ratio would be .5 finds a day, which is a significant higher ratio(almost 400% more) of caching. Now those numbers can chancge for different reasons, but they are interesting to know. My ratio is about .47 finds a day. That's based on 100 finds in 7 months (210 days). That's with no locationless that some ascertaine with (padding the numbers). I've also noticed that the same people mentioned above have finds mostly in the 1-1.5 levels in the terrain/difficulty aspects. It made me take a look and here's how my find pattern has gone: Ratiing-Difficulty-Terrain [1] 23 - 27 [1.5] - 20 - 26 [2] - 42 - 23 [2.5] - 9 - 15 [3] - 4 - 4 [3.5] - 0 - 4 [4] - 2 - 1 [4.5] - 0 - 0 [5] - 0 - 0 So looking at that, most of the caches I have found are rated at a 3 and under. So how do you pan out in all this?

Back in the summer I attended a cache event, actually the only one i've been to, that I experienced my first micros. I believe I like micros better than regular caches. From my experience, they are more challenging to find and although they normally don't have room for trade items, i've not really come across great things to trade. Every once in a while I will come across something to trade for, but lately, it's been a lot of TNLN or TN and left something. The best hiding techniques I've come across where with micros and was where I was inspired when I placed my micro, Hide of the Heron. So far it has been well received. It's in a place where a regular could be placed, but that is what makes it more of a challenge.

crzycrzy, you have hit on some good points there. Some I tend to agree with, some I don't. I think that the ultimate maintainer of the cache is the owner. I have no problem with helping out with some immediate problems of a cache. Many times I often have some ziploc bags, pens, and etc with me. I do not however carry an entire container with me. To me, it's not feasible to carry an empty container in my pack (small). It's already got enough other stuff. Unfortunately though, many cache owners go astray. Whether if they quit, or perhaps someone in the military that gets deployed (a cache is the last thing in their mind to take care of before they go). Some of those caches are great caches. Many people kind of adopt them unofficially. Many people also believe in being a good Geo-Samaritan. On the vacation cache thing, the main reason for restrictions on them, is maintenance, point blank. Doesn't matter on the distance. Caches will not be taken care of, if the owner doesn't take care of them. A cache owner is the only one that can determine if they can properly maintain a cache. There's a question on properly maintaining and it's left open. There is no definitive answer of what an allowed amount of time would be for an owner to check on problems. There's also a question on the distance away. Let's say if an approver will not approve anything over 150 miles away for instance (seeing as no other requirements are met). So if a person wants to put one 151 miles away, will they be turned down? Technically, they should, humanly, maybe not. But then it keeps extending and extending. Each approver is different. The guidelines are just that and they are vague. They leave a lot for the approvers to flex. I agree that there should be a limit on the amount of caches a person places. Many disagree with that, but there are various reasons I can think of. I won't list them now as this posting is getting rather long. The system I was talking about and in which keystone said they are considering is to notify not only the owner, but the cachers, that this cache indeed needs some maintenance. It should be ultimately the owners responsibility, but those Geo-Samaritans out there might want to help out. Plus they might know the owner and know the owner is away or unable to do it. Plus if I know ahead of time that a cache needs a certain thing, then I will be more apt to bring it along to help out. I would happily sign the new log, TN left new log...

I heard Nashville had a great deal of them....

Keystone, wasn't talking about just this thread...talking about hte last couple of days in different threads...It appears that a good bit of it are from those trying to protect the rules, admin and tptb....I guess those are more acceptable...

There sure have been some very rude remarks lately that are totally uncalled for and appear as personal attacks. Are the mods still breathing? As far as the numbers someone posted about about the monthly income flow that is probably coming in, you gotta remember the costs as well. I can imagine the servers and whatever bandwidth costs , license fees, technical aspects from other things add up to plenty.

Were virtuals not allowed in the beginning as well? There still are virts today and still virts get approved. So that is a game we are still playing as well. It's still subjective to opinions. Now if traditionals were denied because of similar requirements of virts then I could see it. But like you said on the distance thing, it's not going to happen.
