  1. I want one of these!!!! Ha Ha. Actually it would be cool if it was a digital camera running on 802.11b wireless. quote:Originally posted by Breaktrack:Hmmmmm, wonder if you can turn off the flash...... dead giveaway... 2. I understand that issue of Vacation caches, but the Approvers have fair judgement and will ask before approving anything that seems like a vacation cache. I placed a few caches a couple hours from my home, but it was approved because, A) I go up there ever other weekend, if not less. and My brother is maintaining the caches for me (and he is a GeoCacher himself). To outwardly say, "The cache has to be within 60 miles (example)" I think is a little too strict as there are other factors that play in. I think the main issue besides maintaining the cache is to be sure that you are aware of the laws regulating the sport in the location(s) where you place caches outside of your normal home area. --------------------------------------------------------- Pardon me Sir, but there is a Wild GeoCache in this area. www.neurocache.com - NeuroNomad & Sublonde's Page
  3. A good portion of the gravesites that I have been too have been open to the public, but I do see your point. I personally think that common sense should be used, but to outright ban graveyard caches I believe is a little too harse. quote:Originally posted by Alan2: quote:Originally posted by Team Kaz:Just to clarify.. I did NOT mean to put a cache on, near or in any graves! I meant put them in or under a tree nearby. I won't even step on a grave as I was taught that was disrespectful as a child. I am meaning to bring interest in an area in need of rehabilitation. Tree or no tree, not only is that still tacky and disrespectful, it's also against the caching rules of hiding on private property without getting permission. It's also illegal as you are trespassing. Cemetaries are open for the purpose of visiting people's graves not to be hiding containers for others to romp through the cemetary while they're looking for your cache. Who appointed you to decide that a private area is in need of rehabilation? By the way, how would you feel if I decided to hide a cache in a dead tree by a stream on your property and invited strangers to come by and tromp on your property? Without asking you first? 4. I completely agree with BigRedMed. I have thought about using one of my webcams as a WebCam Cache, but I can't get the focal setup to clearly make out the cachers that might would try to log the find if I use the road as the coord. In the end we have to respect what the Approver says. --------------------------------------------------------- Pardon me Sir, but there is a Wild GeoCache in this area. www.neurocache.com - NeuroNomad & Sublonde's Page
  5. I guess my question as a realitively new cacher is this: "Is there any true governing body over the sport of GeoCaching?" I know that GeoCaching.com is the primary site for the sport and also is the home of the sport, but surely there are other options (I know of a couple that in respect to the site I will not list), that might allow the listing of caches that GeoCaching.com has banned as acceptable. My point I guess is that if GeoCaching.com has banned travelling caches and you don't like it try listing with one of the other GeoCaching sites, or even create your own website for Travelling caches. If you want to have your cache accepted on GeoCaching.com you have to go by their rules. quote:Originally posted by Draegon:As a victim of the infamous Electric Shavers Mr. Mayhem Micro Madness series I still don't find anything wrong with moving caches. It not only stays within the guidelines and terms of agreement of geocaching.com but poses an entirely new and challenging twist on the sport. Yes, it can be agrivating if you aren't the first to find it, but no more agrivating when you can't find the regular cache or miss that travel bug. As long as the moving caches do NOT become a car-cache, where all you have to do is park and pick it up, then I find absolutely nothing wrong with this style of cache. Now, I know that Jeremy has said his peace and has updates the site to reflect such, and I know that it is impossible to please 100% of the people 1% of the time, but with more and more restrictions it's getting to please less and less of that percent for less and less amount of time. Not to send this thread back into the flames, but when will the sport return to the cachers and out of the red-tape? 6. I know everyone is different about the sport. I personally hate stupid hints that don't have any true purpose. I think that if some places a cache that has a below 2.5 overall difficulty that it should at least contain decent hints. Those are the caches that people go with their families to find more often than not. Personally in the caches I have hide, I give a lot of detail in the hint section. Even past that I usually place more details, or at least semi spoiler photos on my web site. Now if I place one that I want to be harder than a 2.5 then I might skip a little on the detail as to make it harder. I think another issue past the hints is the fact that on some of the hunts I have been the placer would rate the cache as a 1.5, and my crew would comb the area and not find it. And then get that infamous "too easy for a hint" hint. We would leave with a not found, and then come back at a later time and comb the area again only to eventually find the cache hidden under brush way out of sight. I think a lot of people rate caches on too much of a varying scale. I for one would like to see standards listed for rating cache overall difficulty. --------------------------------------------------------- Pardon me Sir, but there is a Wild GeoCache in this area. www.neurocache.com - NeuroNomad & Sublonde's Page
  7. I know that Arkansas gets picked on a lot as being a backwards state, but from the looks of it, they have fully embraced this Hi-Tech sport to the point of being on the cutting edge of States that work with Cachers. quote:Originally posted by cachecrazies:We wish for all of you the great cooperation of the State Parks that we've had here in Arkansas. It wasn't that much work to get joint cooperation - I think they just have to be reasured that geocaching is in _their_ best interests as well as ours and that we are quite willing to compromise. We also think that by approaching each park manager, they still feel that they have "control" of their area - basically, they just want to know what's going on in their vicinity! We have talked individually with each of our park rangers and park managers and once you approach them "one on one" they have a great attitude. We'll be following your outcome with great interest as we love Tennessee caches and hope (and plan) to come down at least once a year to your area. 8. Thanks for the update JoGPS. Glad to have you working to farther the sport in Tennessee. quote:Originally posted by JoGPS:I spoke with them last week and still have a warm and fussy feeling that everything will be OK. The permit will be a cross between the Nashville Parks permit and the new one from AK. They are writing the permit not only for geocaching but other actives as well this is one of the reasons it will be a while before its completed. The moratorium on placing any new caches on state property or in state parks or natural areas will stay in effect until then, even virtuals……………. JOE As far as how long it will take, no offence meant, it will be when they are sure that and the I and T are dotted and crossed. --------------------------------------------------------- Pardon me Sir, but there is a Wild GeoCache in this area. 12. Personally I have went on two graveyard finds, and also placed two myself. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it is not placed around a grave. Mostly I think it is up to the individual geocacher to use common sense when going on Graveyard finds. --------------------------------------------------------- Pardon me Sir, but there is a Wild GeoCache in this area. 14. Yeah, I think that was what I was getting at. What do you think? Think it is different enough for regular (even Virtual) caching to warrant it's own section? quote:Originally posted by Mopar: quote:Originally posted by NeuroNomad & Sublonde:I am just starting to get into Reverse caches, and noticed that they don't have their own Groundspeak forum, is there any plans to add one? Thanks a million. Well, there aren't any forums for traditional caches, multicaches, micros, events, webcam caches, virtuals, etc either. Are you saying that locationless caches are not really geocaches or are so significantly different from the other types of geocaches that they warrant their own discussion forum (like benchmarks)? + _"(Mopar is) good to have around and kick. 15. I have to agree with Kanto. I don't see anything wrong with this. Of course lets hope Geocaching doesn't become all commericalized, like the net, ha ha. 18. See I don't even use the Hide-N-Seek feature of GeoCaching.com. I just let the cache locations come to me in a dream, ha ha. Just Kidding... I wish it worked that way. 20. Yeap, I know that feeling. I hardly ever get lost, and have a good sense of direction, the funny thing is the last time I really got lost was during a cache hunt were I depended too much on the GPSr and then got into tree cover and got turned around and could not get my signal back until my team was about a mile off course. quote:Originally posted by SearchRescueDog:I dont use the gps until I think I am right on top of an area. I find that using the GPS there is the habit of looking down instead of looking around. I navigate mostly by terrain orientation and map. 22. Haven't heard of that site, checking it out now. I use Terra Server and Topozone a lot. I have one cache that I am not getting close to because I get four different locations showing up when I go to Yahoo, Mapquest, Topo and Terra Server. quote:Originally posted by Web-ling:I prefer hunting GPSr-less. I've done about 2/3 of my finds that way. I generally use maps and aerial photos from LostOutdoors.com and a couple of other sources. I typically use the GPSr on most multi-caches and caches in heavily forested areas where the aerial photo doesn't show many clearly identifiable landmarks. I'm at approximately 470 GPSr-less finds on non-locationless caches. http://www.web-ling.com http://www.ntxga.org Pardon me Sir, but there is a Wild GeoCache in this area. 24. I am pretty new at GeoCaching, but I have placed a few caches, and going to place some more this weekend. My crew and I have spent a lot of time thinking of where we place and are going to place caches. I agree that everyone should find a few caches first, we had found about 20 before we placed our first caches, but I don't think someone has to have logged 100+ cache finds before they place their first cache. I have found caches placed by people that have litterally hundreds of logs that were not nearly as good as some placed by people with under 20 logged caches.
