  3. quote:Originally posted by logscaler: And mckee, I have a cache at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=21715 but I know nothing of a virtual in the area. I thought it was a virt, but I was mistaken. Crack in the Ground is one of my favorite spots to visit down there. We were going to make the trek down there this weekend, but plans didn't go as.... well, as planned. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  4. D'OH! We got back from Alaska a month ago...where my parents live! They will be down in a couple of weeks, and Dad geocaches. We may be returning soon as well, but that's uncertain. At the very least Dad could get it there when they're down. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  5. quote:Originally posted by SamLowrey:Well, we are talking about two forms of "responsability" IMO. The one that normal people use, like using common sense, which would include things like leaving small knives. And then the "lawyer" form which means we are to be blamed for anything that goes wrong that can, in any way, be connected to us. If we allow the latter to prevail, no activity will be viable. Having carried a pocket knife since I was 5, I can't understand what the big deal here is. This used to be common thing, is it really dangerous NOW? And worrying about prison crews finding a knife in a cache when there are dozens of different jagged pieces of metal they're handling that can be used as knives or shivs or other weapons? Can't quite grasp that either. Typically people cleaning up are in community service as their sentence and NOT jailed. Yes, people in medium/low security facilities are sometimes used for these jobs, and typically the only problem encountered is that somebody just...walks off. If they can just walk away from their duties, why is somebody worried about them finding a pocket knife? Can't they just walk off to a store, something far more common than a geocache? Do we outlaw stores to prevent this diabolical thing from occurring? It's like I've fallen asleep and awakened on Saturn. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  6. Pulling a feature like this is a pretty lame thing to do to the folks that used the tool. Pity. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  7. quote:Originally posted by Cooter13:I am getting the sense that geocachers are common sense people who enjoy Mother Earth and all that she has to offer. Yyyyyup. quote:I also gather that cachers respect other people's wishes and desires and therefore, respect other opinions, even if they are different from their own. Nnnnnnnnnope. In this respect, they're typical people. Just wait until this thread locks down because "guns have nothing to do with geocaching." -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  8. Lost Stuff cache - This Locationless Cache is the last place you look for something you've lost. The best part is, I can claim several of these every day! -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  9. quote:Originally posted by dasein:Hey McKee, go find http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=3b9a8777-9a7f-4e49-93ec-23ba68b43af9! I spotted this one on a search. That place scores high on the "odd feeling" scale, I'm not sure why. Just add banjo music.... -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  10. quote:Originally posted by Nochipra:How about a sex toys cache? Sounds fun, huh? Funny, no one has logged it as found, yet it's got more traffic than all the other caches in the state...... -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!

  12. quote:Originally posted by SamLowrey:I, personally, appreciate the grass roots level of cache maintennce of others which makes this enjoyable and even possible. I recently visited a few caches I have already logged to, primarily, check up on them after hearing of some "construction" in the park. I'm glad I did. The last person hiding a cache didn't place it in the right spot and it would have been clearly visible by anyone who glaced over from the new bike trail (which used to be no more than a dirt trail few knew about). I rehid it and made a note about the changes in the area. I agree. It seems to me that the community effort to keep thins fun at cache sites is far more important than "Who here didn't pay?" -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  13. quote:Originally posted by doodlecat:What is a "REAL" cache? Did you mean I-84 (instead of I-94?) How far are you willing to stray from the highways you've mentioned? Real = physical cache. I lost the word "traditional" for some reason. It wouldn't "click." Oops, 84, yes. Actually our plans have changed, but you can't delete posts. We finally did map out a few caches that sounded like a nice workout by searching out zip codes out to Hood River. Not very elegant, but the search method worked. Now we just need to re-plan the trip. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  14. quote:Originally posted by Sparrowhawk:the first one would be the first sunday in september 6... I am someplace else tomorrow... Well, we won't plan on going down there tomorrow for breakfast then. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  15. I bought a Magellan 2000XL when it first came out! When was that, anyway? I didn't want to lose my truck every time I was hunting. We still use it to make a trail back to the rig when we're hunting, but we've finally graduated to a Garmin GPS V for navigation and caching. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  16. We're probably due to be listed as Shameful because we haven't "joined." Sure, we try to spend $5-$10 on the stuff we leave, and we aren't always good at listing everything out. We also pull a lot of crap out of caches, broken trash that someone has thoughtfully dumped in the can because they believed somebody might really want a severed Barbie head, a cut length of coax cable ad other rubbish. After we've emptied it, we put good stuff in it. We just haven't paid for membership. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  17. I nominate Jomarac5 to go to every cache and match up their logs with the online find claims. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  18. quote:Originally posted by Corp Of Discovery:A virtual pat on the back. WHAT??? Well there goes MY reason for claiming all those archived caches! If the numbers only mean something to the individual user, why worry that somebody else had a cache taken away from them because their find was questionable? -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  19. I'm sure that the Forest Service is proud of themselves for keeping the location a big secret, but I am also sure that there are thousands of people who know the spot and don't know that they aren't supposed to know about it. I would be willing to bet that the site is a common visit for a lot of people, and few if any are seriously injured or killed while visiting. There are 2 other Oregon rifts that I can think of offhand. Crack-in-the-Ground has a virtual simply because it's designation doesn't allow a traditional. Beaver Creek Canyon http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=56053e1c-cf8a-494c-b0a7-82d26bf13ea6 has a traditional because it's designation (or lack thereof) allows for one. Aside from some elitists in the Forest Service wanting to protect people from an identical hole, what makes these two places any different than Hell Hole? Heck, Beaver Creek is a 200 foot deep rift with sheer walls, AND they've built neighborhoods on the rim! I can understand the desire to keep the Forest Service happy, but at the same time what they're doing is pretty arrogant. Is this area really any more dangerous than any of 100,000 other places in Oregon? There are plenty of steep climbs, plenty of areas with thick vegetation, plenty of areas with falling rocks, plenty of areas with dropoffs. Will NOT having an existing cache reduce the number of people who already know this place? Nope. Will placing a cache bring hordes of people milling through? Probably not. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  20. quote:Originally posted by seneca:I once suggested an "unwanted pet exchange" cache. The idea didn't go over very well. Substitute "pets" with "parents" or "children" and you might have a winner.... -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!

  22. quote:Originally posted by paintfiction:I've been kinda hoping for something like that to happen TO ME! I carry a stick, a VERY sharp knife, and a grudge against thugs. One of these days I'm going to catch one in a situation where I can LEGALLY vent my past frustrations on some poor idiot criminal who thinks he has the upper hand. If he's lucky I'll just shoot him. Otherwise he will truly be an example for other criminals of what NOT to do. BTW... if anyone reading this has criminal intentions, my advice is to get some job training and get a real job. There's plenty more people like me out there just waiting for an excuse to end your criminal career - one way or another. Can you tell I've been a crime victim? LOL! Jim Can I get an Amen!? The problem with voicing such a desire is that it indicates premeditation. Maybe you'd better stick with "I exercise reasonable precautions, based on my past experiences." -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
  23. So it's fun to put a cache together with a theme in mind. What about when the selection process breaks down along the way? What might be some terrible ideas forged into geocaches? Twin Peaks cache: Featuring the Laura Palmer Travel Bug, the hardest part was hiking in with a human torso wrapped in plastic. Marquis DeSade cache - Even when it's not snowing you're required to carry chains. Pulp Fiction cache - Looks like the spider's caught a couple a' flies... Raiders of the Lost Ark cache - Watch for snakes, and don't look at it when you open it. Sturgis cache - For best results, wear a silver lame' jump suit and ride your Vespa. Deliverance cache - Leave Ned home for this one. -------------------- You have the right to defend yourself, even when geocaching!
