  1. I haven't ever left anything religious until yesterday. I had the tiniest little red "leather" Bible. I can't even read the words...my eyes are too old. Since I live in Texas, and there are alot of Christians around, I left it in a cache. I know finding such a thing would have thrilled my kids when they were little. I wasn't trying to push an agenda or anything....it was just cute, and I thought someone might enjoy finding it. If a tiny child's Bible freaks someone out...then maybe they would be happier in another country?
  2. I was wondering the same thing. I have tramped all over PI this week and all I have is a spot about the size of a quarter...and it doesn't even itch. My husband just looks at it and looks like a leprosy patient.
  3. We used to be avid geocachers...and then my husband thought we had misplaced our GPS in a move. So for the last 2-3 years, we haven't been caching. But I found my GPS! I also found a Waypoint 15 geocoin in our backpack. I've had it forever...in fact, its the only geocoin I've ever owned. I put it in a cache a couple of days ago, but when I read that it was so collectable, I went back in after it. (I know, I know....didn't they used to call people who did these things "Indian givers?" ) I replaced it with a plastic ring and a wooden chinese bracelet. I don't think I want to start collecting geocoins. Should I sell it on Ebay or what??
  4. Okay, this is off of the FIRST discussion..but sometimes for swag I do this: I bought a box of small dice...these can be found at a game store. I made little photocopies of Yahtzee scorecards and instructions. (Reduced them so they take up very little room.) I put 5 dice, a couple of scorecards and the instructions in a ziplock baggie for a cheap Yahtzee game to go! I usually save these for places where "campers" might find them...something to do at the picnic table after a day of geocaching.
  5. Wow...I hope it turns up. Did you call the McKinney Parks and Recreation Dept., or the Police Dept.? I lost my GPS near the frisbee park in McKinney. I had tramped all through the woods finding a cache, and on the way out of the woods dropped it without knowing it. I freaked out...I hadn't been on any visible trail and I knew it was a goner...and it was getting to be evening and hard to see. But I found it! (whew!)
  6. I planted a cache in my parents' hometown. It was vandelized and trashed a couple of weeks ago. I was unable to immediately fix it. A really nice guy who lives there volunteered to set it back up for me. I told him he could adopt it if he wanted to since he lived so much closer. So,...how do I go about changing my cache from my name into his? Is this possible, or will he have to create a whole new page for the cache under his profile? Thanks! Gimpygoo
  7. Could some of you more experienced cachers take a look at one of my caches I hid? So far, both people looking for it have had problems. The latest one doesn't seem to understand what she's supposed to do (it's a multi cache). Maybe she's just new, or maybe I wasn't as clear as I thought I was. What should I change? It's the "Weeping Tree" cache in Arkansas. Thanks! Gimpygoo
  8. I have no idea how I got this name or what it means. I vaguely remember a friend using this name on a website when the internet first came out. I always remembered it, and when I got a computer of my own, it became my name anywhere that I needed a screen name. I'm definately not 'gooey'. Gimpygoo
  9. I was so excited that I just bit the bullet and bought my own GPS. I haven't been sorry. They are really cool gadgets and do much more than I thought...I've come up with lots of practical uses for mine. Buy a $100 model. Use it a few times, and if you don't like geocaching (what, are you crazy?)then sell it on EBay!! TAke the plunge! Gimpygoo
  10. Strangely enough, my 9 year old son is alot better at finding the caches than myself. I get us to the general area, and then he finds the actual cache. So far, the hardest cache we've had to find was a set of coordinates that were written on a rock. We had left the print-out at home by mistake. We knew we were looking for coordinates written with a Sharpie, but didn't know what they were written on. Not having the clues actually made it alot more fun! Gimpygoo
  11. Thanks to Jouko's manual link, I figured it out! The Sportrak Pro manuel is actually better than the Sportrak Map manual which is what I have. I didn't realize that after the Lon/Lat button was pushed that there was another level of options. Thanks everyone!! Gimpy
  12. We looked under primary and secondary, but there wasn't anything that looked like hddd.ddddd. Is there another name for it or something? Pardon our extreme ignorance. Anthing remotely "mathy" or scientific scares the crap out of me!! So far everything has been alot easier than I expected! Gimpygoo
  13. We want to go on a two part cache hunt. The second coordinates are in hddd.ddddd format, and we can't figure out how to do this on our new Magellan Sportrak. Any advice? Gimpygoo
  14. Thanks for the advice from everyone! My hubby and I went and looked at GPS last night. Best Buy had Garmin Etrex Ventures on clearance for $138. Then we remembered that we have a 20% coupon for REI, plus an $8 credit. SOOOO...we've decided to spring for the Garmin Legend, which will be about $125 after discounts, credits and rebates!!! We'll be getting it Thursday evening, and can mess around with it then. Here's a stupid question: How come GPS work on regular batteries, instead of on a battery like a cellphone? Sarah
  15. Hi Cathy Ann and JemJen! Yes, we'll be at Dangerfield! But when we heard about this cache thing we got all excited. (Our kids are 7 and 9 and don't enjoy nature hikes....but with an objective like finding a cache, we could have alot of fun!) So...DH wants to go to Tyler this weekend. We're buying a Garmin Etex Venture this evening....they're on clearance at BestBuy for $138, which is cheaper than anything I've seen online for the same model. See you next weekend!! (We'll be the ones in the Coleman Pop-Up...haha) Sarah
  16. We're going to Tyler State Park. So where can I look up caches that may be hidden there? Also, I assume I can get a topographical map from REI, or is there someplace to get one free online? Thanks! Gimpygoo
  17. We want to start geocaching this weekend. Because of time restraints, we'll probably have to stop by REI on our way out of town and pick up a GPS. We're going camping at a State Park here in Texas. I have two basic concerns: 1...if we have the coordinates to a cache at the State Park, is there any other info we need? We won't have the internet at our disposal since we'll be on our way to the campground. 2...How do you determine which caches are inside of a state park? I know that you can enter a zip code to find a cache near you, but how do you determine if it is inside of a park? Can anyone provide us with a step-by-step description of what we need to do once we pick up our GPS? I'd like to print it off and take it with us as a troubleshooting guide of sorts. Thanks so much!!! We're excited! Does anyone here belong to the North Texas Pop Up camping Association? Sarah (aka: Gimpygoo)
